You
have a nice one there... Hook up with Jim Stigers, he can fill you in on Vaughn dogs.. Never know, your male may fit into the puzzle to enhance what is out there.. We never know these things till we see what is out there...

I also live 20min from Oscar Thomas. I have spent many of hour visiting with Oscar talking dogs. My uncle had a great number of vaughn dogs. He went down to Elberts several times. I will get Spooks ped posted this evening. I have a story I will post about a dog of Oscars tonight. If anyone knew of Illinois Warrior I have a cassette of him and a pup my uncle owned out of him named Rattler tracking and treeing from 1980

Back in 2004 I was squirrel hunting not too far from home. I had been out for quite a bit and had a big bluetick come trotting through the timber to me. My first thought was maybe someone had been coonhunting and would soon show up. After 20 min no one showed so I decided to call the number on the collar. I call and Oscar answers and I ask if he had a dog loose. Oscar was very sure he had no dog loose and didn't understand how this dog had his name tag on the collar. Not knowing Oscar I hung up and thought "must either be a cull or he is just silly". I decided I was going to take the dog home and maybe try him out coonhunting. The dog would not leave the timber and I wasn't going to force him. So reluctantly I left. I asked my step dad if he knew Oscar and he said he did and told a story or two about the old coonhunting days. For a few months it ate away at me how this guy had no idea about this dog. Thoughts from this fellow is a jerk to this fellow is too weak to cull a dog ran through my mind. Jump forward to 2007 and I sought out to buy a bluetick. I ended up picking up Spook and and decided to call Oscar to talk to him about the dogs in Spooks ped that he owned. A few months later I moved to Illinois and took Spook out to see Oscar. I had an issue with Spooks paw and Oscar helped me with the issue like a pro. We got to talking about dogs and I brought up the phone call years before. Oscar told me he always had someone hunting a few dogs for him and a fellow that lived 1 section over from where I found the dog had a male. Oscar went on to tell me that the dog I found was not lost at all but in the back yard of sorts of the fellows place that was hunting him. He told me he had no clue I was where I was when I called him about a loose dog. Oscar went on to tell me the male I "found" was the sire of Spook... Blaze!
small world
isn't it... Well your living between two guys that sure enjoy the Vaughn blooded hounds.. Enjoy that fact and suck up as much knowledge from those 2 while you can... Neither is getting any younger.....

you have a nice looking and well breed hound wish he brings you lots of good nights of hunting. Get you some pups out of him and a good female it not much off that type of breeding a round anymore.
ive got a littermate here to your y dog roy, my buck II.my pup out of rebel and fly has already ran and treed the 1st time out.techno - you got a well bred male there, be careful what you breed him to.

Boys to be quite honest, I may never breed to the dog. Right now I haven't the time or resources to properly deal with a litter of pups. Sawtooth, who did you get Spooks littermate from?

i meant that the vaughn blood is getting far to thin out there and guys who are serious about keeping that bloodline going need to have a carefully thought out breeding program.

about how much of the actual vaughn blood can b had in a pup nowadays?20-30%,or is that way too much or way too low?i've been huntin a little wih techno,he's got a pretty nice ol dog.
every vaughn blooded dog i have here at my place or have coming here in the near future is 90% vaughn blood or higher.that spook dog is in that category.nice dog.

when elbert died, his dogs didnt die with him.alot of those dogs got into the wrong hands and yes i agree that many of those dogs that got into the wrong hands did get bred the wrong way and didnt amount to a hill of beans.on the hand, there have been a few breeders tucked away that you dont hear too much about that have been keeping the line of dogs elbert had in tact and bred like elbert did.there isnt many of these guys left but they are out there.elberts blood is alive and well in these carefully bred and maintained dogs that would fit just fine in the bluetick farm kennel that once resided in paragould arkansas.

I made the thomas steelblue trouble x Mcdonalds illinois blue fly cross. I kept a male that made a pretty decent hound, but i ended up selling him.
The fly female was extremely average, needed more tree, thats why I bred her to trouble, as he was more of a tree dog than a track dog.
I have hunted with the steelblue blaze dog, and have had several out of him, he reminded me of the older vaughn hounds , good bawl mouth, go hunting good stay put tree dog, and almost too much nose to suit me. I have seen him and the old thomas steelblue hoss dog, who was a brother to jet 6, split tree 30 yards from each other and both had there coon. Big Deal Right? It was 12 degrees out that night with a 20 mph wind out of the west and we had 3 inches of frozen crusted snow on the ground. Those two hounds could run a cold track.

Spook is a fine looking hound. love how hes marked up. I breed for those big black spots. I call em saddle backs. Thats the look that I breed for. Hope he does as good in the woods for you as he looks.
Saddle backed pup... Duncan's Blue Dice. I'm and very proud of producing this hound.

BOY!
Look at that head, those EARS and feet! .........If he grows into them he is going to be a 80-90 lbs male! By the way he is going and things i've seen from him he will be my very first stud dog to head off my line of blues. I'm very excited to be making this next step in breeding and raising hounds to share my blood of dogs with the rest of the blue dog hunting community. I have something special going.

That's a fine looking pup bluebelll!! Here is one for you mulebarn...... when I got Spook, I didn't give a flying fork about his ped. I only cared about him coming from coondogs. My uncle and step dad hunted the same stuff Spook is from. My uncle started plenty of dogs for Oscar and his brother, whom is deceased. My uncle visited and bought dogs from Elbert several times. Some of us don't give 2 poops about "big names" in front of dogs names in a ped..... just dogs!!
I'm
not about big names anyway. To many people get stuff in there head thinking they have to have a all grand ped. WRONG. I'm just a ole country boy that loves coon hunting because my family uncles dad ect. got me started and most of their dogs back in the day were mixed up walkers breed to blueticks and redticks breed to bluticks and then back to walkers just mixed up stuff and those grade dogs could prob whoop alot of reg. dogs in hunts. And just so everyone knows me I'm not big into hunts. I've only been to five in my life and only to of them was I drawn out into good cast of honest people. Its Highly over rated. Im just a country coon hunter thats desires to breed and raise naturals. If I have to work with a dog alot its not for me. I want dogs that you take to the woods and their instincts do the rest. Its 10% training 90% hereditary and in their blood. My dogs dont walk on water but I'll grant you If I'm feeding them and their tied to a chain in my back yard its for a reason. They tree coons not trees. I take pride in my hounds because I've breed and raised them and gave them a chance to bring out their instincts by hunting every night I can. like I say I dont walk on water either I'm not a pro. I'm no john wick. I'm just a ole country boy thats a carpenter by day coon hunter by night. "I'm a simple man they call me a redneck I reckon that I am"
