Smoke
Took Smoke out for a run tonight. First drop he went in about 500 yrds and struck a working track, Worked it on in another 200 yrds and locked up treed. I went around on another road and got to within about 100 yrds of him and walked on in to him. He was treed up a huge oak. I walked around the tree a couple of times looking and finally found him peeping out from a big fork in the tree. We left this one to run again and moved on down the swamp. Turned him into the sunken swamp. he went in almost 500 yrds and struck a cold track, he worked in on in to 750 yrds and treed. He was in deep and I knew that I could get closer, but I would have to go back around by the river so to the river I went and rode to within about 75 yrds of where he was treed. As usual I took a couple of pictures and started looking for the coon. The tree was slick. If you will notice in the top picture there is something in the background and I cant figure out what it is. I did not see anything there when I took the picture and it is not in the second picture. I didn't even notice anything until I got home and blew the picture up. The only thing that I can figure out it could have been one of those Halloween Goblins after a lying coondog.lol
Where did Shadow end up?

Smoke
Took Smoke out for a run tonight. Turned him off an ole woods road and he went in headed east for about 75 yrds and made a sharp turn south for another 75 yrds and slamed a tree. He never opened on the ground. I walked in to him and he was treed up a medium sized hard wood tree. It kind of looked like a persimmon tree, but it wasn't. When I walked into the tree, there was a small branch between me and where he was treed. There were only a few leaves on the tree and there was no doubt in my mind that this tree was slick. I started not to even walk out on the other side and look, but I did and I could see a buldge in the tree way up near the top and when I put the scope on it I could plainly see that it was the coon. I figured it was a small coon, but it wasn't it was a big boar coon. We moved on down the swamp and turned loose again. Smoke went in about 100 yrds and struck a cold track. He moved it across a slough and on through an oak flat and into a bad cutover, but he only went through the edge of the cutover and back into the oak flat went silent for about 75 yrds and locked up treed. I rode to about 20 yards of where he was treed. He was treed up a large Oak and unlike the other tree it was loaded with leaves. There was also a big Turkey pin close by with a big limb going into the oak that he could have crossed out on, but with out him looking I wasn't going to find him in either tree and I didn't. We moved on down to thee sunken swamp and turned smoke into it and he went in about 300 yrds and struck a working track. Moved it on out to about 600 yrds and bumped a tree and turned and trailed back toward where I was at for about 150 yrds and locked up treed. I rode right up to the tree. He was treed up a huge oak. I walked almost all the way around the tree squalling and shining. I had planed on shooting this one out but I had decided I was not going to find him, so I said coon If you will let me find you I will not shoot you. When I looked back up there. There he laid in plain sight on that big limb in the top picture. I told the coon how lucky he was and leashed Smoke up and we called it a night. I don't think Smoke liked the Idea to much of Him doing all the work and me making deals with the coon
Good one!
Mr. Jack, I think Smoke is getting smarter on track. The good ones do as you know. See you soon. Ed

Mr Ed
It seems like he is doing it more here lately, when he really gets a coon running. He will go silent and it won't be but a minute or two and he will lock up treed in there somewhere
with the meat. I thought the first few times I saw him do this that he had made a loose, but watching him on the Garmin he had just hit cruising speed. The first time I saw him do this we were up at Justin's hunting some corn fields. We had already treed a couple of coons. Sheba 11 and Smoke dropped in there pretty deep and struck a working track and got it moving pretty good and were coming up the swamp about 300 yrds from where we were at in the cornfield. They had done got the coon running good. They were both opening good and all of a sudden Smoke went silent. I thought something had happened to him. I looked at the Garmin and it showed Smoke way out ahead on the track. I thought the Garmin had messed up. About a minute later Smoke locked up about 50 yrds ahead.
We had to go around to another road and got to within 75 yrds of where they were treed. We seen pretty Quick that it was an Albino coon. Chris and Justin were talking about how far ahead Smoke treed this coon and I picked at them and told them that that was the way he treed a white coon. He just went silent on them.LOL. I have only treed 2 or 3 of them in my life time. Hope to see you soon Mr. Ed.

Smoke
Took Smoke out for a short hunt tonight, dropped him off an ole woods road in to an oak flat. He struck in at 675 yrds. It was a cold track and he worked it on in another 175 yrds and treed. I drove to about 100 yrds of him and walked on in to him. He was treed up a small oak going up into a bigger oak. I tried to shine the tree, but with all the other trees around it was just a canopy up there, and for some reason around here right now the coons are just not looking. you may find the whole coon, but he wont look at you. We called it a nite after that as I just wanted to give him a little warm up for the Ms. State hunt this week end.
Dennis, I was wondering about the Cricket female that is in Smokes pedigree that is out of Joe. Did you own her or know of her.
Cricket was a litter mate to my Gr nt Lucy. I hunted with Cricket several times and she was a super nice gyp. One of the better crosses on Chiefs Joe.

Billy and Will Raybourn with Sheba 11 and Hank
Sheba 11 and Hank
Mr. Ed, I finally got him out on a coonhunt. It was several years before ole Tramp died since Billy Raybourn has been out on a hunt. We went for a little while last night down on Billy's place. His son Will had some deer feeders out and said the coons were eating all the corn. We took Sheba 11 and her littermate Hank that belongs to Will. This was Hanks first time to the woods. I really liked the way Hank acted. I figured he would be pretty wild his first time out. He acted good and hunted good. We didn't strike any thing on the feeders, but Hank and Sheba dropped on in there about 350 yrds and Sheba struck and worked a track in there. I was wanting to hear what a mouth Hank had on him, but he never did open and I'm not real sure he was with Sheba. Hank came back to us about the time Sheba treed. We were hunting in pasture type land and we rode to within a few yrds of where Sheba was treed. She was treed up some small oaks next to an open pasture and an oak flat. There were 2 coons up there and we put one out and Hank finally got to see the animal that he was born to run. The coon was pretty lively when he hit the ground and Hank joined in. Both dogs were pretty bloody when it was over with and it wasn't all coon blood. We called it a night after this one as Bill and Will both had to work today. I sure did enjoy being out with Billy again and getting to hunt with Will. If any of you guys need your horses shoed, you need to contact Will. That is what he went to school to do and they say he is good at it.
Is Mr. Billy Raybourn the man that owned Raybourn's Blue Smoke?

Yes, Billy owned Raybourns Blue Smoke and Smokey River Jeans Blue Tramp.
Billy, Will and Hank
Glad they made a round with you Mr. Jack. Hope it reignited that Coon Hunter Fire in them that we all know never dies out. No matter how long we are away from the sport it don't take much to have the fire blaze up again. Hank is a good looking hound and hopefully they will be fired up to put him in the woods and have some fun. Mr. Ed said they got a good rain yesterday so the trailing conditions next week up there should be much better than what we have been dealing with around here. Looking forward to the Road Trip. see you Soon!!

Beutiful
It is good to hear Billy got back in the woods! Man he used to love it! I knew something big happened somewhere we got a good rain the other night. We surely needed it. See you soon. Ed

Smoke
Jeremy picked up Smoke Friday and they traveled up to Charleston, Ms. to the Ms. State Hunt. Jeremy said Smoke did a good job both nights. He said he made a bad call on him on the first tree Friday night and wound up loosing the cast by 75 points. They won their cast Sat. night, with 200+, but just could not get the coons to look. I'm always satisfied as long as the dogs do good and Jeremy said Smoke did great all weekend.
