Hunting

Headed tomorrow back home. Gone stop by Chelsea on way home and pick up BB. She was bred to Mickey Gilmore's NtCh Pr Alabama Judge. I will post pedigree on future pups soon. I also was notified that I will be the secretary / treasurer of BBOA zone 6. Hopefully we will have a great turnout for the youth event at the end of the month. Y'all keep'em Lookin up!! Darren

HUNT

Hunted for a little while last night. First drop I cut Cotton and Cy loose in bottom at about 9pm. Cotton struck a track but it didn't seem too good. She was opening here and there and moving down the bottom. Cy wasn't opening at all with her. Cotton went about 400 yds down the bottom and about the time I looked at the Garmin, CY let out a huge locate and started hammering a tree. He had gotten off to himself and was treeing hard. I made my way in to him and Cotton was still opening some in the bottom. Cy held his tree and was on a big water oak. I looked hard but could never get the coon to look. I don't know if he had it or not but I liked the independence and he held his tree. Cotton ended up in some rough stuff and was coming close to a road, so I caught her up. Next drop I cut Andy and Cy loose together. Andy struck in at about 350 yds and started heading up a small creek. He worked the track about 900 yds and got behind some houses. He was coming up the creek to the road and crossed under the paved road. I just caught him up and called Cy out to me. Called it a night. Not a great night but excited about how Cy just keeps progressing nicely. I haven't pushed him really hard because of the hot weather but he should be fun to hunt this fall about acorn time. He is 9 mths old now and is maturing into a nice looking hound as well.

I had to go to the funeral home last night to pay respect to my neighbor that passed away. Didn't get to hunt but we will hit it hard tonight. My Cy pup is getting me fired up and I am really enjoying seeing him progress. The future looks good!! Y'all keep'em Lookin' Up!!

HUNT

Made a couple drops last night. First drop I cut Cotton and Cy loose down a small bottom next to a couple fields. Thought coons may be hitting the blackberries in the edge of the fields but they got deep before Cotton struck. She worked a track down the bottom with Cy opening every once in awhile. They got about 600yds deep and Cotton located and Cy loaded up right behind her. They treed hard and Drake and myself made our way to them. They had made their way into the hills and were treed up a persimmon tree. I couldn't find the coon and think they missed him. Cy really lit up the tree and was exciting to listen to treeing. Next drop I cut Andy alone up and old powerline with hardwoods on each side. He went over 800 yds up a branch and never got struck. He came out close to a paved road and we caught him up and called it a night. Got home about 12:00 AM and 5:15 sure does seem to get here quick. I will be after'em again tonight!!

Drake handled Cotton for me at a UKC hunt tonight. He got a win on her for me. I got a first on Andy. BBOA youth championship is this coming weekend. Hopefully Drake can do good. Y'all keep'em Lookin up. Darren

Congrats on your wins. Cant keep a good hound and hunter out of the winners circle long. Hard hunting and good, honest hound and handler work will get their share of the wins. Congrats again!

Yes Scott he will be hunting her. I let him choose whatever he wanted to hunt and he picked Cotton last night. She has that huge screaming mouth and her locate that separates her in a cast. She is very easy to call and he likes how she operates. My nephew may hunt Andy or BB in the youth championship as well. Thanks guys , like I said , coons weren't moving and it wasn't very pretty but I will take it. I should have won 2 casts with Andy already but had some bad breaks and some bad calls. Hopefully we are on the right track now.

Darren , I enjoy reading this thread . I check in on it now and then .I'm glad you keep it up .I'm curious that I don't I see mention of the first dogs in the thread , Blitz and Witch. Do you still have them ? How'd they turn out? Congrats on your hunt wins. Good Luck Wayne

I sold Blitz to Stanly and Micheal Bowling. He is doing a good job for them. He chewed a little more than I liked, but was treeing his own coon. He is also a littermate to my Cotton gyp, so he would be limited on breeding here at my kennels.
My son and Jason Myers owned the Witch female. I really liked her and how she operated. They got frustrated at her when she started missing some. I wouldn't have sold her but she wasn't mine. Hard hunting and some correction was all she needed in my opinion. I am really pleased with the dogs I have here and have a breeding plan laid out for the future. I'm sure there will be some more bumps in the road, but I like the direction I am headed. Thanks for the compliments.

Rick, I appreciate it. There was a poor turnout at the hunt but I will take the wins. Andy should have already had 2 cast wins but bad luck hit us. Hopefully he will be NtCh soon.

I gotcha , I may get too attached to my dogs. I got a blue hound that's soon to be 2an a half I've had since a pup.Hes treed some coons but he's kinda got that me-too syndrome where he runs tight with other dogs unless he really picks up a scent he likes .Then he'll break off and hunt till he trees .He'll stay put on the tree once he finds it . He's aggravating by his self . One time he wont go at all then the next time he'll go on and hunt good. I have taken him to the woods and he never went more than 50 yards in 3 turn outs.He hasn't been hunted much by his self. Hes well bred , got 4 of the top ten producers in 4 gen pedigree .What do you think? cull?

Wayne sometimes those are the hardest decisions to make. I look at it a little different than a lot of folks. First of all I am not going to keep spending a lot of time with a hound if he develops something I don't like about him or her. I hunt hard and I am not going to waste time on one that I know will not satisfy me in the long run. With that being said, I know people that hold on to dogs too long because they are scared someone else will get it and it will start doing good and they wish they hadn't sold it. I hope every dog that I sell or give away makes the best one the other person ever had!! I have seen dogs like yours come on around and be nice ones.
If he was mine I would hunt him alone for 30 nights pretty consistently and if he wasn't showing the progress that I thought he should after that I would cull him. Set him up for success the first few times with a feeder coon and slowly pull him away from the feeder and let him have to get deeper. After all that he may still not hunt good alone. They can't stay here for long if they won't hunt out and run and tree a coon alone. That is just a country boys opinion but don't waste your energy and time on something that isn't fun for you to hunt!!
