TALK ABOUT SOUTHERN VA. FOOD,

I had it today. My wifes Granny had chicken and dumplins, [ made like they should be with big gobs of dough laid gently in chicken broth], fried chicken [ fried in a black cast iron skillet ], and fried apple pies, [with dried apples not applesauce, fried in lard she made ]. And as Grandpa Jones always said on Hee Haw, YUM, YUM! My wifes Granny is a ol mountain women [ 89 or 90 years old, shes not sure about her age ], and shes really reminds me of my Grannys, [ on both sides of my family, there with the LORD now], and I really love to be around her. Since I got hurt, [6 months back], Ive been tryin to watch my weight, [ I dont need to carry any extra around, and since I got hurt Ive went from 209 to 180, because of the gym and the pain meds]. But that went out the door today. I believe HEAVEN will have food like that, [ remember the SOUTH is the BIBLE BELT!!] GOD BLESS YALL ALL.

Shrimp

I just sauteyed a batch of two hour old shimp after I we got the heads off of about 30 lbs. 30 lbs with heads on is about 1/3 of a daily limit. Could probably got a limit if we had stayed longer but I'm used to getting a limit in about two hours of fishing time in years past. Besides, if you don't work too hard it is an enjoyable way to spend a balmy evening. Shrimp season started September 15 but I don't go till I find out where they are running the biggest and thickest. They were average, about 50 count. They will get bigger ( 30 count ) by Nov. But it's liable to get chilly enough for the gators to go in and then I'll be coon hunting. I only need to put up about 50 quarts for myself anyway. Plenty of time. You can buy fresh caught heads on shrimp off the commercial shrimp boats for $2.50 a lb. We, (castnet throwers) can catch up to a cooler full a day but we can't sell them because it would compete the the commercial people. We keep them for home use only. Besides, when you figure I started getting stuff ready, mending net, etc around noon, beer and gas money etc. I probably made .25 cents an hour but I also had a good time.

South Carolina has opened the season on alligators this month thank God. Some people have been getting some real nice ones, 900 lbs or so. Enough to make the news. Then you ought to read the comments about the gater articles with people crying about torturing a "magnificent animal" . Used to be Bambi , now it's bull gators. My how our sensitivites have blossumed.

I know. And did you read the articles comments on where these fruitcakes wanted her fed to the Gators, excuse me , by "similarity of appearance" under the Endangered Species Act, Gators might appear similar to a Georgia Cracker-dyle. Watch out, they might confuse you and you will be well protected whether you need it or not.LOL with a Crockerdyle by a morom with the power to regulate the Act.
