Dan- Hope ya'll made it back up north ok! It was good getting to talk with you for a few minutes Friday.

We had a good night last night and which defies logic since it's the end of February and the moon was completely full and we got a late start. We'll take it though! We saw 5 coons tonight all on the outside!

On the first drop we turned Swag loose on a coon we saw cross the road about 15 minutes earlier. He ran the track down to river and treed in about 2 minutes. We started to him and he quit treeing when we were about 30 yards from him. We got down there and didn't see him but it was on the edge of a good sized river. We finally saw a few ripples in the river and shortly here he came with the coon in his mouth! I've been hunting now for around 15 years and have owned some nice dogs and that is the very first coon I've ever had a dog catch on the ground!

On the next drop my other dogs got a track going and Swag took it away from them, crossed the river and treed first and had a double. My other dog backed him and he seemed fine with it!

On the last drop, the dogs got deep when we heard them strike. My two old dogs worked a track back towards the truck but Swag snuck off and took it the exact opposite way. About 10 minutes later he fell treed about 300 yards from the other dogs on a small branch He was flat spitting them out and was there to stay! It took us a while to get to him and when we finally did he was on with a big coon in his tree. Here are the pictures:

I don't know what's happened to him in the last 3 weeks or so but it has suddenly all clicked for him. He is fast, loud and a dead loner! No one in the cast will strike their dog on his bark!

Managed to take a video for the double he treed. You can get an idea of his locate when he hits the tree. This was on the double he treed on the second drop-

Saturday night we came home from walker days instead of hunting and took Swag. On the first drop he went 0.8 miles and treed by himself in a huge den. On the second drop he treed in another big den split from the other dogs about 100 yards. He's showing he might have the tools to make a nice one.

Simon , You got yaself one fine young dog buddy He got his daddys locate . Got a update on Ash ( Swags brother ) and buddy sounds like he got the same qualities as Swag " Big Huntin Dog , Loud, Accurate and A Treee dog.

Tonight's the night- Swag's coming to town for the first time.

He split last night about 400 yards from my other dogs and was treed in a coon holiday inn. We never treed a coon and it was pretty windy but made 4 dens. There is no "pack" in this dog.

They did manage to lay one up Monday. They treed the coon and he was balled up in the first fork down low like he was asleep! They worked the track about 45 minutes before they finally treed. It was a cold one. Our season goes out Saturday night. I'm anxious to let Swag get after the kittens though once they are out and about. It won't be long!!

I hope all is well with ya'll. It sure looks like Dan has some fine young dogs for sale! If I wasn't loaded down with projects (mainly the one big project) then I'd take hard look at that Smoke x Cloey pup. The ones Ronnie kept were lookers and should have the tools they need to make nice hounds.

Simon, Go get em buddy You and Swag are gonna be a tuff pair " He gonna make the right king " From the reports there isnt many Smoke pups that have "PACK" in there vocabulary Thank you for the compliment on the young hounds They are some nice ones and we cant keep em all

Talked with Mr. Jones in Missiouri and he said snow set him back a little but he got his young Smoke dog bout ready to take to town as soon as the snow gone !! Keep up the good work guys

Thank you all for the congrats! I'm just the one that gives him a ride though. Thank you to Tim, Dan and Mike for all of the encouragement and support and for believing in us to hunt this dog from this once in a lifetime cross. He could have ended up at many different places and I'm glad he came to the VA mountains.

It is exciting though to see the fruits of the work that these three men and the many before them have put into this cross and the dogs behind them.

Swag went to town and came back with a 2nd place finish in the very first hunt he's ever been taken to. He's 15 months old and is by no means finished. He still needs lots of hunting and work but he's definitely on his way.

We had a good hunt Friday night- Swag was second and second in a hole on the first drop. He treed first but I could barely hear him and wasn't sure it was him till we got up there a little closer and I could hear him. He was down in the hole while the other dog was treeing on the outside of it. On the second drop Swag circled and then the last drop three dogs got deep straight up a hollow from us. We heard two of them strike in then nothing for about 5 minutes. Swag opened for 3rd strike in our 3:00 direction away from the other dogs about 500 yards away from the cast and broke the 8. The next time we heard him he barked once and roared onto the tree treed about 150 yards from us on a ridge. He is one sneaky sucker!! He was by himself- the nearest dog was about 1/2 mile away and swag had the coon. This was the only coon we saw all night and he finished 2nd with 175+ on a wild coon.

He's not going to take much minus- when he trees it's a coon there or a den. The only way he'll any minus is if he gets out of pocket and the 8 gets him. He was by far the loudest dog on the cast. He's really been clicking lately even though the rut is almost gone and the tracks we are striking are long. We have been making lots of dens the last two weeks but have also been looking at some coons. I'm not going to push him- he can take it all in as we go but he's proven he might be worth a little something after all.

His brother " Ash " is not far behind either from the report we got !!! The way they operate sounds just like they 100% like Smoke & Candy " Alone somewhere with great accuracy !! Had good luck last night- 30* and the wind gusting to 20+mph. Despite this, the coons were moving. We only hunted a couple of hours and saw 5 coons laying up. It was so windy we decided just to take Swag by himself. He was treed with a double in these pictures. He treed a single after that a short distance from this tree and we called it a night.

Our season went out Saturday so hopefully a few pets on the head will be good enough for him for a while. Just for perspective- the vine running up that tree was about the same diameter as my hat. It was HUGE.

Took Swag to town for the 2nd time last night in Floyd, VA. He won the cast with 150+ and treed the only coon we saw about 0.8 miles deep. He came home with another slip. He now has two 2nd place wins and will only need one more to be NiteCh. He's 15 months old.

He's doing well- he split from my old dog Thursday night and had the coon when my old dog had a den split about 40 yards apart.
