I believe how many males to females in a litter is a crap shoot, lottery, luck of the draw or whatever else you want to call it. I dont think it matters if the stud dog is shooting missiles!

Posted by bluebellchopper on 07-08-2010 09:21 PM:

Well

I don't think there is any facts to it at all just a theory. wayne v ofcoarse the female is a big role. jaws your prob righ haha. I didn't use a big name stud dog. I used a male that I know alot about. Me and the gentleman that owns him have been breeding together for several years. since 2000. He is a bear dog not a coon hound. He is one of the best bear hounds around. I've heard many times of jay(the man who owns the stud) and several other bear hunters hunting in a group turn a pack of dogs out on a track and the only dog to make it to the tree would be fluff(the stud dog) by himself. He is a great rig dog; he can strike a bear going down the interstate 70 mph. He is a fast drifting style on the track and is in front all the time. Great locate a tree dog. Him treeing bear by hisself is not rare.

I like this in him because my female is more of a nose to the ground dog on the track. I made this cross with that in mind. I'm hoping to offset her minor faults with his good traits and his minor faults offset by Belle's good traits hopfully adding more speed into the pups. Don't get me wrong my gyp does just fine moving a coon track and treeing me coons night in and night out. She treed over a hundred last year at the age of nine. She has a very powerful nose. I know this because I've had numerous dogs in the back of the truck with her and she will rig and strike the coon hundreds of yards before the other hounds even open up or even know there is a coon in the area. I've seen her do it way to many times. So the nose power is there I've just tried to add a lil bit more speed on the track.

Ok my theory about the males to females take it or leave it. If a male breeds to ten different females and everytime the litters are 80% to 20% males over females. Ok now maybe that don't make his genes dominate but it is putting more of his son's out on the ground than females. I may have worded it wrong the on the sentance yall are asking about. again its just a theory

I have some sad news....Out of the ten that were born only three survived. I dont know if she killed them on purpose because she was so old and she knew that she could only take care of so many in this hundred degree heat or what. But for what ever reason it happened I'm half heart broken. I was really really looking forward to scattering out this blood. Maybe there is reason for the way things happen and the way they work out only the man up stairs could explain. Hopefully he blesses the four that have survived.

That sucks about loosing all them pups! Keep a close eye on the remaining 4. Hope it works out for ya. I agree thats kind of different that %80 of his pups are males. Maybe he is shooting missiles! haha!

Posted by bluebellchopper on 07-08-2010 09:39 PM:

Luckly

we had a blue heeler that just had pups and I took the remaining four away from belle and put them with the blue heeler and she is feeding them and taking care of them the last couple days like they are her own. She is smaller and only two years old i think she will take better care of them...Yes it does suck I lost five males and one female. I have one female left and three males. One male goes to the owner of the stud dog for the stud fee and I'm keeping the other three since there will only be three left.

for ken...

i had bailey out last week, and she rigged on coon for the first time (that i know of). i don't know what anyone else would think about that - but i was impressed to hear her do it...

and i know she did it... b/c we passed the coon on the road, and seconds later she and another hound both opened up. the other hound is known to be a rig dog...

just thought i'd throw that in here for you...

Steve, I thought that dog got crippled as a pup and never got hunted much at all??????

Posted by arkiedog on 07-19-2010 11:20 PM:

You're excatly right Pete.
Greg ran over him, and broke his hip when Crowbar was just nine months old. At that time, he was just started on turn loose coon. Greg figured he would just leave him loose and let him be a yard dog.
Turns out, the pup learned to get around on three legs and started doing what he was bred to do, all on his own.
To make a long story short, over the past four and a half years, Greg has let pups run loose with Crowbar until they start running and treeing with him. He's started countless pups in the right direction, including my Bawler dog and this pup out of him I picked up yesterday.
Ol' Crowbar is famous for leaving a dead coon on Greg's front porch after beeing treed all night. He's done this countless times..lol
I'm not trying to sell pups out of him or offer him for public stud. Just bragging on a country coon dog.

Wayne and Steve,
My old orginal Blue Dog Henry fell out of a tree and bummed up a hip. He carried one legg for about two years. He treed several coons and bred several gyps using only one back legg. Henrt was out of Roy Campbell's Bawler and Earl Marler's Judy.
