-- If you have to deny a ride to thin the competition you need to find a better dog. (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928513837)

Yes they should be condemned. Imagine the numbers and attendance if you drew out with friendly people who practice good sportsmanship at the club house, to and from the woods and while hunting. You are quite capable of being a tough competitor with a good dog there to win and still practice excellent sportsmanship.
Lots of things are matters of opinion what kind of dog you hunt, what sort of truck to drive, blondes or brunettes ect. Being a poor unfriendly sportsman is not a matter of differing opinion maybe lack of values and manners it doesn't have a place here and this sport and the world need less of. IMO.

Good for you! Many a nights I've watched my husband be the last one out of the woods where he went to gather someone less agile than himself dog sometimes when he has a scorecard to get back. Very few hunts does someone not ride with us either to or from the woods. I guess one is wrong thinking that it is a common courtesy to extend the invitation. I myself would like a list of all that do not allow anyone a ride to the woods. When the hunt is over and I drive around 3 miles to pick everyone up I will let them know I will be waiting at their truck to make sure they make it back but they are walking every step.
One post wasn't all mine there are very few things that get under his skin but this one hit a nerve lol.

Blast away, but you aren't going to change those who have a different opinion or do things different from the way we do. No one can mandate decency or good sportsmanship, I want those things from the ones that truly care to give them freely without duress. If a man does not want someone to ride with him, is he really a poor sportsman? I would rather know these things upfront than to have a problem later on in the hunt. Come to my house and the door is always open, I will feed you and treat you like family. Not everyone would, but does that make them bad? When we come to expect others to follow suit to our standards and are disappointed when they don't, the problem is with us. We as hunters are facing problems much greater that someone with different values. Fighting among ourselves just makes things more difficult. We do not have to agree or like what others do, but it is their choice, not ours. Dave

We sure need more like you and Cheyenne! We should strive to do what we perceive as the right thing, but keep in mind that our standards are not everyone else's standards. Saving a guy from a 3 mile walk might just change his attitude towards giving someone else a ride in the future, if not, you still done the right thing. It's easy to be nice to those that are nice to us, the true test is being nice to those that don't deserve it, but you do so anyway. Dave

Differing opinions are always fine with me. A few bad apples can just stay home they hurt more numbers than they will ever draw in at set no example for the new or youngsters to this or any other sport.
Some people can change and see the error of their ways I've seen it happen. Usually with age we all start to see the picture in a different light and realise it's the little things in life that are important. I've seen the young change by being around those who set a positive example for them not just in coonhunting.
Maybe some of those whose opinions differ as you called them may someday see the poor example of sportsmanship they are setting and decide to be a positive example. Good guys can and do win there is no reason to not be there to chit chat as one said or be a taxi service. I do hope that someday when night blindness is a problem for them driving but their ears and legs still want to hear and chase those dogs maybe even hitting a hunt or two they think back and see the error of their ways.

I have always tried to see the good in everyone, some do a good job of hiding the good, if they have any at all. You said it best in another post, "we have to set good examples for others to follow". We also, have to accept the fact that not all will do so, but we can not let that rob us of our values or prevent us from acting accordingly. We are not defined by others but by ourselves. As a combat veteran, I pray for world peace, but I want us to always be prepared for war just in case. As an old saying states, "you can not judge a man without walking in his shoes", and it takes more than just a few steps. Dave

I'm going to leave all those that won't allow anyone to ride with them on a cast with one final thought to ponder. How many of you have turned down a ride at the end of a hunt when someone drives around to pick you up and take you back to your truck saving you the sometimes miles long walk? My bet is none of you are walking you are piling in or jumping on the tailgate and taking the bottle of water the lady inside offered you 😉.

Great post, I would bet the same thing. May not change them, but gives them something positive to think about. Remember though that someone that has such little feelings for their fellow man, may be hard to change. Lol. Dave

I will tell you this there are but a handful of clubs within 2 hours of me in any direction that I will hunt on a regular basis. No one has ever been denied a ride ever , and I have seen little to no arguing either. I think the Cumming's Clan speaks the truth and exemplify sportsmanship I have ridden with Cheyenne , Dalton and never been on a bad cast with them judging and or guiding , same with Leonard Simpson and a few others. But the bottom line is let the dogs hunt quit trying to game the game for crying out loud It is Coon Hunting! have fun! it is not WWIII.

Hunting

The coonhunting community is a diversified group from all walks in life. Some have different values, morals and principles , the one common thread is the love of dogs and hunting. The sanctioned hunts have a set of rules to go by that all must follow. Unfortunately, there are no set requirements for decency , manners or other values that some of us hold in high esteem. While some of us may not like the behavior of others or some of their choices, it is their choice/s to make. Like someone else has stated, we should be hunting for the fun/pleasure and not let someone else's behavior decide how we act. We might just be able to change someone's bad behavior by showing them kindness, even if not merited. If not, then we can at least say we tried. No one likes to be berated, but most like an act of kindness. Dave
