That is certainly a bizarre one. Sounds like he could have had a compression lesion in his cervical spine or meningitis. I"ve seen both cause dogs so much pain like that. Sorry to hear he didn't make it. Probably would have needed an MRI and a Spinal tap to diagnose that one. They can be hard to diagnose, and usually I hit them with some big antibiotic combinations to see if they respond. Very unfortunate.

If you are using the heartworm prevention dose you should be fine. For a 50 pound dog that is .01cc of the 1% Ivomec solution. It's really small so you will need a TB syringe to draw it up and a 20g needle. Looking at a TB syringe that would be the very first graduation on the syringe nearest the needle. In fact if you drew the solution up and then squirted it all back into the bottle, you would have a hub filled with .01 cc of Ivermectin. Then draw up some gatorade through the same needle and syringe to dilute it out and give this orally.

Harry I think there is a lot to learn yet when it comes to feeding dogs for hot weather. Purina has done most of their tests on bird dogs and what they found is high fat, high protein and low carb is ideal for dogs that hunt in the heat. That is different than what we thought in the past, thinking that it was the fat and protein levels that needed to be dropped in hot weather. Their theory is that dogs actually use more energy up in the hot weather and need higher energy from fats.

What I've found is feeding low carb, grain free type diets works best in my dogs in the heat. It will create a smaller stool because of the higher digestibility and less water waste. It also causes less hind gut fermentation and heat. A few highly digestible diets that I like are Victor Ultra Pro, Purina EN Naturals, Purina Pro Plan Focus Puppy Canned, and a buddy of mine is having good luck with 4Health Turkey Grain Free from Farm Supply. Give those a try. It can take up to a few weeks to notice a difference in some dogs. Feed dogs right away after hunting and add water to the food.

Sounds like recurrent superficial pyoderma (staph infection) or fungal infection (dermatophytosis). Fungal infection is tough to deal with sometimes but you might want to look at dog houses and dog boxes as the source of your problems. Bleach them heavily with 1:20 bleach: water solutions. Do the same with your truck box. Take out the mats and throw them away and get some new ones unless they are rubber mats that can be cleaned in bleach. These are tough to deal with because they don't respond to antibiotics. Bleach:Water soaks work well for resistant bacterial and fungal infections. Dilute it out to 1:40 for use on dog's skin. Just apply it to affected areas of the body. There are some really good antifungal / antibacterial shampoos and foams on Amazon for treating superficial infections if they are caught early enough. Sulfer shampoos work well too but I like the Chlorhexidine/ketoconazole combinations the best along with the bleach soaks.

For food I like Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach for a lower cost high quality derm diet. It's grain free and starts with Salmon as the first ingredient. Runs about $40 for 33 pounds. Adding a tablespoon of Coconut Oil to the diet daily helps clear some of these nasty infections too and keep the hair shiny. Start small with a teaspoon daily for a week and gradually increase it to a tablespoon daily.

Clean everything you can think of where the dogs sleep or rest.

I'd also use either Bravecto or Simparica monthly on this dog to make sure it doesn't get mites like Demodex or Sarcoptes. I'm betting this is fungal though.

I hunted our female up untill about 2 weeks before she had the pups.
She wanted to still go hunting,,but I put a halt to her hunting 2 weeks before..and she had 8 very healthy pups.
I did make it a point to hunt the cleanest woods I possibly could with the least debris in the woods,,cause she is a small dog,and her belly was hangin low,,real low,,,and didn't want her tearing her belly or anything.

Haha nothing wrong with a little Rum.

I hunt females up to 6 weeks pregnant. They need exercise , especially at that age. Females that are out of shape at that age will have a harder time with whelping pups. Make sure she stays in good physical condition and get her transitioned over to a high quality puppy food at 6 weeks pregnant. Deworm her with Panacur/Safeguard for 3 days.

Yes Interceptor Plus is plenty for monthly deworming, however it has not been studied in pregnant and lactating females. Here is a link to the safety studies. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailym...fd-3fa6ed1dd354

I'd also get a stool examined yearly and have it sent in for a Comprehensive Fecal Panel to Idexx Labs that uses the newest Elisa testing methods for roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, Giardia. It's been a game changer. The company that makes Interceptor Plus will guarantee their product 100% against all the parasites it is labeled for and will reimburse you for testing and treatment if they are ever diagnosed with these parasites while on Interceptor Plus monthly. It's a great product. For pregnant females I'd stick with Heartgard Plus or Panacur/Safegaurd and low dose Ivermectin ---> .01cc total (hub) orally of the 1% solution for a 50# dog. That is way smaller than the dose normally used on here , but it is the dose for heartworm prevention in Heartgard (6ug/kg).

As far as diet goes for a pregnant dog, I'd transition her over to a puppy food unless this diet has the calcium levels of a puppy food. She will need that calcium when those pups start heavy nursing.

What is the correct dose rate on the Oral-Pro Pyrantel Pamoate 50/ml, i want the dose rate in cc / ml for pups and dogs both? i have seen it on a bunch of sites but the way they broke it down they may as well wrote it in Chinese because it is to hard to figure out,i just want the cc/ml per pound rate for pups and dogs, thanks.

What wormer do you recommend for a litter of Pups at 2,4,6,and 8 weeks?

We have been using Strongid T for all of our litters but had coccidia in one litter last year and wondered if we needed a different wormer for them.

Strongid T (Pyrantel Pamoate) is dosed at 1 cc per 10#. It's a relatively safe dewormer to use on pups without the fear of overdosing.

You will need something different for Coccidia. See the current thread on the first page of the forum on treatment and prevention of coccidia.

Strongid T works well in pups at 1cc per 10#. You can also use Safeguard/Panacur on pups safely at 1cc per 5#. I like to alternate these wormers. So use Strongid T the first time and then use Panacur/Safeguard the second time.

I have a litter of pups that are 4 weeks old. I have just started handling them and notice a couple of them has rear dew claws. Is it too late to have them removed or should I have them removed now? Thanks for any help you can give me.

They need to be removed within the first 3 days or you will have to wait until they are older. I'd recommend waiting until they are at least 16 weeks old now.

Sir i have a 3 year old 52 pound treeing walker female that i give .5 cc of ivermectin on the 5th of every month. I took her to the vet today for a tick test and she came back positive for heart worms twice. How is this possible. Thank you for your time.

Hey Doc

I let a friend have a pup at 6 weeks old and he done good until close to 1 year old and was up to date on all shots and he kept him wormed with Safeguard and went to Drontal+ at 7 months old,he acted fine but started to look bad and then started loosing weight a little bit at a time but he still ate good,by the time this pup was 15 months old he had him at 3 different Vet Clinics and they run test after test on him and could never tell him what was wrong with the pup and i am not sure what all the test were but i told him some of the basic ones to have them check,to make a long story a little shorter the pup looked like he dried up and wasted away and or starved his self to death even though he was eating good and he was feeding hi-pro Victor feeds,when the pup was right at 16 months old he died eating his food and my friend said it looked as he had chocked to death and he went on to say for a couple of months when he tried to bark you could hardly hear him.
Doc i was wanting to no if you had ever seen a case like this or what your thoughts was on what it could of been that caused it because that is a bad way for one to go,thanks for any help.

Heartworm Resistance populations do exist in the United States , especially the MS Delta Region of the US. Here is an article explaining it.

I've seen a few develop wasting disease like this at a young age. Usually these are digestive issues and malabsorption issues in the GI tract. Pancreatic Insufficiency, Intestinal Villa Atrophy, Chronic Infection, Neoplasia/Cancer, partial foreign body obstruction, Cholangiohepatitis, Chronic Wasting Disease, Dietary Sensitivity, IBD- Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Lymphangectasia, Brush Border Enzyme Deficiency, Vasculitis/Portal Hypertension, Parasitism would be at the top of my list.
