lol I don't think they're really butter balls anymore, especially after that 2 mile hike they took the other night. They'll be ready, now whether I'm gonna be is the question lol

Been tearin up the woods here lately. Taz is coming on big time as a bear dog and has been goin on coon too. Trailed 200 yards last night and slammed a tree. Got the ol ring tail to move from his hiding spot otherwise I wouldn't have seen him. Hopefully a good kill season will get these ol boys crankin good.

Little update, Nite and Taz are turning into track drivers, Friday night had a three quarter of a mile chase but by the time I got in to where they were they had stopped treeing so I'm not sure if they had it or not. Last night though they showed their grit. Turned loose, they went out a lil over a hundred yards, taz struck, started moving, the next couple bawls sounded muffled like something had a hold of him. Next sounds I heard was those of a nice fight, Nite then took in towards him to see what was goin on and the fight was really on. Went runnin in not knowing what they had a hold of, kinda expecting a bear to be perfectly honest, only to realize that they had caught and stretched a skunk. So now I'm taking on the task of trying to get rid of that horrible smell. I just hope that experience will keep them from doing it again, neither one of them are feeling very good today lol.

Season comes in tomorrow night, hope for one last good night of runnin and then crank up the heat tomorrow. Hope everybody has a good season.

Rough night last night, had trouble finding tracks and when they did they weren't good ones. Made one tree that was hollow, they were sure it was there but I couldn't find it. That track they drove almost 3/4 of a mile. Glad its a long season though, happy huntin y'all!!

Last weekend

Had some ups and downs over the weekend. Friday night we had to do a little trash breaking when they caught a possum on the ground. Saturday night taz made up for it. Got out deep by himself, picked up a track in stuff you couldn't hardly walk through and put meat to the end of it. Stayed treed for an hour and a half while we walked in to him. He's turning into a fine young hound and I'm hoping he'll turn into the stud I can see him being.

big coon contest

Had a great night last night at the big coon contest, treed one early and ended up getting third with a 15 lb coon. The winning coon weighed in at 21 lbs. Had 25 hunters registered and 11 coon checked in.

New addition

Welcomed a new addition to the family this morning at 12:29. My beautiful baby girl was born, a healthy 7lbs 11 oz and 19 and 3/4 inches long. 21 hours of labor and basically zero sleep but it was all worth it. Oh yeah and I missed opening day of rifle season but didn't actually miss a thing.

For Sale

I've decided to sell my show champion female, Diamond is now 2 and just isn't turning into the hound I had hoped. She will hunt just wont open on track or show much interest at the tree. I haven't hunted her as hard as I probably should have but with having two other young dogs who were showing more promise I made the choice to put her away for a while. Last time I hunted her she hunted with the other dogs the whole night, and was at every tree when I got there. She has a big mouth and seems to have a good nose. She is a very well put together dog and is also house broken because she was my wife's house dog for a while. I would love to see her get the opportunity to be hunted. $200

Scott and I already talked about her, he has too many he's working on to try to get her going. I think if she would be pushed a little bit more than I've done with her she may make a good dog.

Long lost thread

Been a long time since I've posted on here. Quick update, almost all of the blueticks in this thread no longer call Wide Open Kennels home. Diamond was sold to a man in Tennessee to make a show dog for his daughter. Nite is currently in Virginia being hunted. Taz was sold to a friend of mine in Maryland, his wife is babying him during the day and he's tearing up the Maryland coon at night. Now if I can just talk him into competition hunting him. Daisy is the only one that is still around. My wife and I were surprised with another little girl last year which helped fuel my decision to sell the dogs. My bear dog Hank was also sold so for a while I was out of the hound game. Last fall I bought an English pup from Nathan Kisamore, this past weekend she became show champion. We also have a 3 month old bluetick out of Bobby Estep's Diesel II dog and Joe Harvey's Glade Run Beda. He's a nice houndy dog who is already showing interest in coon. Hopefully by spring I'll have some hounds to brag about.

Entered Daisy in her first water race Saturday, she impressed me, got a slow jump out of the box but was able to take 2nd line and tree and almost caught the lead dog in the end. Guess I'm gonna have to start swimming her more.
