I had a good talk with Jarvis Umphers (Mr. PKC and Black and Tan man) last fall at the PKC World Hunt. He was stationed near Max Hunter in VA for awhile and did a lot of hunting with Max and Timber Chopper. He said that dog could tree a pile of coon but he was pretty quiet on track. He never said anything about TC being out of a black and tan but there are a lot of B&Ts that have come from this line of dogs. The best B&T I ever hunted with was a Grandson of TC Jr..

He was exactly the way people describe the old TC dog. He was tight mouthed, independent , loud, a hard pressure tree dog, and accurate. I took TJ pleasure hunting with him and a River Bend Flag Walker dog named Flag that won a world hunt one year. Those 3 dogs flat got after it that night. TJ and this B&T split on 3 or 4 different trees and never made one tree together. That Flag dog didn't know what hit him. He sure was a pretty tree dog though. lol

George, you are correct, but if you go back to the Redbone special issue of Coonhound Bloodlines--June 1985, Mr. Max Hunter refered to him as Blue, there's a lot of good reading about Timber Chopper in that issue. I would like to see the Editors of Bloodlines reprint some of them for all the younger fellows. I find it very interesting.

Redbones

So im new to the Redbone breed in recent years and like what I see so far. I have a female that is all T-Top and Hoffmeister bred (Arnold's Red Warrior II) and a 2 yr old male that is Off of Crooked River Red Turkey and a 1 yr old Male off of Pigeon River Little Red Gus that is flat turning it on. Just bred my female to Gus actually. Turkey male has treed 30+ coons alone and I am super excited about these red dogs but it seems that the breed is split up into groups judging by this forum. Im sure every breed is that way but Redbones seem to be more than usual. So far I've made the aquatintce of Danny Barrett and Rex Griffith which I have much respect for. I am closer to the (Va Cartel) than the Smokey Mtn Boys but am a rookie in the breed. I will be hitting the competition circuit very hard come fall with the Turkey male. Not trying to hijack the thread just trying to gain knowledge about the breed

I'd say you will do just fine learning from Danny and Rex. They've done their share of winning. I hunted with one of Rex's dogs at Redbone Days last weekend and she could get in that woods fast and was a solid hard tree dog. She was all business. Good luck and don't get rapped up in the politics. We're actually one big happy family! lol

But the politics is half of the fun. You can only hunt for about 5-6 hrs/day and then sleep for 8. What are you going to do the other 10 hrs? And when is the last time that you saw a real big family that didn't have it's disagreements? I fought with my brothers the whole time that we were growing up.

Well we have learned how the old timers did it. Do you think that we should revert back to their "methods"? But they did not have to DNA their dogs. Anyway, I thought that you Midnight Outlaws already had it figured out. Just stick to the Mark Marshall/Kelly Hyde "plan". That is what I have been trying to do. But I haven't had as much success as they have had. Where were you several years back when they told us all what to do. Maybe someone should go back and find that old thread.

Politics

I'd say The politics are part of what keeps everything interesting in any discussion. If a person can't do a little bragging and take a little criticism (all in fun) I'd imagine they need to find a new hobby. I've been coon hunting for 30+ years and had some dogs that money couldn't buy but have had a whole lot more that I'd pay someone to take lol. I've lucked up so far and ended up with some nice hounds that really do hunt to please. My female is a close hunter that trees a lot of coons that most dogs run by and will drowned out most males. the Turkey male hunts out 700-800 yards alone and is an independent coon treeing machine. the Gus male is just a natural born good hunting coon hating dude that absolutely cannot stand a coon and is loud loud loud. Ran down and killed the last 2 I've turned out to him.

Depends on how many years is several...
For the past 5 I have been building a solid foundation from the remnants of what I had going 20 years ago when I had to leave the breed and sport to raise my son and a few other important things...
When I started back in 2010 I had a plan...and I knew it would take the better part of 5 years to assemble the foundation I needed and another 5 to build the type of reproducers that can change this breed and level the playing field...
As I look back...I think things are right on track....maybe even a little ahead

Yep

If he shows up you can always guarantee the hound is on point as is the handler. Danno was rolling too and wasn't anything more Kasey could have done from what I'm understanding. The hound that won his cast is now in the Final 4. I always say if ya get beat might as well be from the one that wins it all. Guess we'll see if that happens tonight. :-)
