-- Ohio coon season! (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928281179)
quote:I have noticed there are few little coon around my spots. Out of the 50 I've treed only a few were this summers kits. My theory is it was so dry for a couple months and most young coon couldn't find water. That's my theory and I believe its right because I only treed a handful of kits all summer and normally I slam them all summer.

seen what i was afraid of last night, found a coon sick, eyes where blue cloudy looking and it was like it was being electrocuted, shaking violiently, hope its not distemper. its been a few years since we had a major outbreak so i figure its gonna happen after a few generations it seems the immunity system in coon break down. seems as though every 10 to 15 years. there were people out everywhere last night and i heard several shots, but no dogs barking anywhere, believe there was some spot lighting going on for them high dollar hides!

Looks like another good night Trevor. I will have to try to get up your way sometime. You probably have better hunting than I do.
I haven't seen any sick coon around here but didn't tree many young coon this summer either. It's about time for a disease to wipe them out. It's been 20 years or so.
We are going to hit it tonight. Hopefully tree a few
i think there is a couple reasons not to many little coon have been treed, one is with all the coyote moving in i believe they have gotten a few, the other is i believe most coon got bred early last year which were born alittle earlier so they have more time to grow, the drought thing i don't think has much to do with young coon, we have had bad droughts before with no reprecussions, and i also believe the sows took kittens to water, meaning like migrate to a better spot. thats my theory, might be right and then again i have been wrong once before! all i know is i am tired of these guys spot lighting coon and taking more than one in a tree, i guess they need the money, lol!!!!!!!

I throw my light around the edges of woods and fence rows, have done it for years now and I will say this for fact. I have only shinned one coon so far this season. Years past early season I always find eyes laying up. No such luck this year. I do it because it gives me an idea of where the coon are and how many are out there.
Be glad to take you out hunting sometime Doug. Tonight would have been the best night all season I'd say but I had to many family things going on.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you

Not much luck down here either Trevor. Havent been hunting real hard but between trapping and hunting both only around 25-30 coon so far and i think only 2 throw away coon. Thats rare usually the first 2 weeks of season are mostly throw aways til u start catching the big ones. Definitely one of the slower years i can remember and cant figure out what happen to all the small coon

I didn't make it out lastnight. Sounds like it would've been a good night. My son took 5 more into the buyer yesterday and got $43. He was happy!

yes i usually do have a dog that would tree 400 to 500 coon per season, but why waist them on a old dog ? if at this time i had a young dog turning the crank and seeing how accurate him/her is without the leaves, i would kill every coon him/her trees, this includes spring-summer and fall hunting. one year(1995) i killed and saved 326 coon and they gave me $10.00 across the board which meant he handed me $3200.00, to me that is worth saving them and it didnt take me all season to get that done. 1984 a buddy and hunted from the week before thanksgiving til the first week of december and we killed 63 of the biggest coon i ever seen in ohio and we got a little over $1400.00. that's when they had only three sizes, small, medium and large, we was paid $28.00 across the board for all 63. these fur buyers now days are full of crap, holrs in the bellys dont make any matter and what is all of these grades ? they seem to have ten different sizes. nowdays you cant kill 63 coon and bring home $1400.00. i killed almost 300 coon and i donated all to a kid cuz i said if he wanted them, then he carried them when he went along. on the other hand, you can never pay your gas for the season and then for your dog feed for the year by saving hides.
