That Dec. 13, 1999, article from former Defender staff writer Chinta Strausberg, headlined "Obama unveils federal gun bill," reported that then-Illinois state Sen. Obama, who was running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, proposed "to increase the federal taxes by 500 percent on the sale of firearm, ammunition [sic] – weapons he says are most commonly used in firearm deaths." According to Strausberg’s report, Obama made the proposal at an "anti-gun rally," where he proposed a host of other gun control policies.

For nearly 20 years, the NRA has worked tirelessly to oppose any United Nations effort to undermine the constitutional rights of law-abiding American gun owners. The latest attempt by the U.N. and global gun banners to eliminate our Second Amendment freedoms is to include civilian arms in the current Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), which will be finalized next year.
In order for any treaty to take effect, however, it must be ratified by two-thirds of the U.S. Senate. To ensure that any ATT that includes civilian arms is dead on arrival in the Senate, the NRA has been working to get as many U.S. Senators as possible to publicly oppose any ATT that includes restrictions on civilian arms.
58 members-- a majority--of the U.S. Senate have signed letters to President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton saying they will oppose any ATT that includes civilian firearms ownership. These strongly worded letters caution the President and Secretary of State to uphold the Constitution of the United States. As Senator Jerry Moran's letter warns, “(A)s the treaty process continues, we strongly encourage your administration to uphold our constitutional protections of civilian firearms ownership. These freedoms are non-negotiable, and we will oppose ratification of an Arms Trade Treaty presented to the Senate that in any way restricts the rights of law-abiding U.S. citizens to manufacture, assemble, possess, transfer or purchase firearms, ammunition and related items.”
Thanking the NRA for our long-standing work on this issue, Senator Moran remarked, "I appreciate the NRA's partnership on this important effort to defend the rights of American gun owners. I want to thank them for their active support in sending a strong message to the Obama Administration that our firearm freedoms are not negotiable."
As we have for nearly two decades, the NRA will continue to fight against any U.N. treaty that undermines the constitutional rights of American gun owners. These letters send a clear message to the international bureaucrats who want to eliminate our fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms. Clearly, a U.N. ATT that includes civilian arms within its scope is not supported by the American people or their elected U.S. Senators. We are grateful to Senator Moran, Senator Jon Tester, and all members of the Senate who have chosen to stand on the side of America's 80 million gun owners in opposition to those who want to eliminate our freedoms. And thank you as well to those NRA members who contacted their Senators and encouraged them to support this critical effort.

Gun Control.

This Un treaty is sure something to take seriously. However, gun rights at almost all local levels around most of the country have grown in leaps and bounds over the last four years. It is far easier for a law abiding citizen to get a conceal carry permit now than it was four years ago. States all across the nation are choosing to honor other states CC permits on thier own, without federal government leading the way. This is how it should be. I live in a city that has between 400,000 and 500,000 people and just this last Tuesday we went from a CC city to an open carry city. Though it is very important to contact our Senators a Reps dont forget to contact your smaller local governments. Many letters and emails to a senator should carry weight but does it carry as much weight as a mayor? Or ever two or three or more mayors from several towns and city's within that state?

It was a terrible thing that happened in Colorado when that nut shot all those people. The Liberals have jumped on this making an issue on gun control. If someone with a carry concealed permit would have been there, probably not as many would have been shot. I think the best thing that could happen would be to post outside of businesses that people with carry permits that are armed are welcome. This would stop some of the nuts from trying to carry out these type of acts. Most of these people are cowards and usually give up before they are shot. If we want to cut down on gun violence, I think we need to encourage more law abiding citizens to carry concealed. JMO

Instead Obama and the Liberals want to disarm law abiding citizens so that only the thugs and criminals are armed. We can not take the risk of Obama getting 4 more years. This will be a disaster.

VOTE ROMNEY IN 2012--LET'S KEEP OUR 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHT IN PLACE!!!!

Gun control to remove the guns from the citizen will not happen over night it will start small and go from there. I believe this is just a small step. As for those in public office, if they say they can decrease the budget in three years and have the answer for the job crisis and say they know the answers because they understand government then get in office and in three weeks say this was worse than we thought, and do not accomplish the change they say they will, that person will not get my vote. Dem, Rep, Conservative, or Liberal does not matter. Saw a sign the other day "Gone-change you can count on". Seems like the changes that we were told would happen are very slow in coming, meaning good jobs. Now the slogan is "Forward". Sorry, forward was what the american people were hoping for after the change was to be made. Sorry the forward should also have started earlier than four years down the road. Seems the the ajenda is to restrict our freedoms little by little and we do not need to move forward down that line. Saying all this am I happy with Romney, no I am not. All I have to say is he needs to pick a darn good VP if he wants to win. Just my 2 cents.

today we have more laws than in history of UNITED STATES and you can't even walk down the street without a bullet proof vest and a 12 ga, it's sad.
look what just happened in movie theater, and they'll say we need more laws for gun control.they just sold a bunch of guns to some drug dealers under their laws and look what happened. people protest, riot over racial violence, injustice, but won't stand up for god given right of FREEDOM!!!
