That's OK Jason , there's alot of folks out there that feel the same way. LOL
A real check dog is not a me too dog. Competiton hunting has grown alot since it started around the 1940's. About the 1980's is when people found that a dog that would get away from the others would do alot of winning simply because of the mathmatics ie 100+100. Then everybody started wanting that style of dog. Don't seem to me many really enjoy that style but they have them because they think that is what they are supposed to have cause that's all they heard about for the last twenty-odd years. Very few people even know what a real check dog is these days. Check dogs don't have to check what every other dog is doing. If we turn loose together and mine strikes first and your dog will not come to mine, then next time I'll send mine to yours so we can get a little competition going. See who can out do who on the same track. Don't seem like people would care if I give them that much of headstart. LOL. Of course, when ever any dog strikes first the he is a babbler to the folks that don't own him. I understand that. LOL
Time you cut yours loose. Mine will be treed.

Nope but want bark much on the ground. Learned how to keep the me to ers away. Ain't filled a feeder in months. Bears keep getting them and I ain't interested in feeding bear. Plus with feeders. We still might have to go a .5 mile or more to strike a coon. Do you ever hunt a dog alone? How can it tree a coon if you do without its pack?

LOL. we can do that now with a camera. If they are there. Most times you'll find em. Even now. Really we will go come fall. Hit some wmas and wear em out. I don't care what any of you hunt. So long as it suits you. I just like to stir it up some BUT I don't care for others running my type of hound down either. Then saying its any less of a coondog because it want pack.

I start every night I'm by myself with one dog out. Sometimes it's a trainee if they are running and treeing with other dogs. Mostly cast a trained dog though. If that one gets a coon going and making time, he is welcome to tree it by himself and get the reward. If he trails it into the marsh, he will have help coming proto. I ain't got time to let one dog run in the marsh for maybe two hours when I can send in another trained dog and some trainees and get him out of there and up a tree in thirty minutes. They all get their chance by thereself but they better make good use of it.

I remember the only time you could split tree was when the kittens came down with the sow. Other then that, only one coon for three or four or five dogs. However many we cut at one time. Alot of fun to hear and see that many dogs on one track, under one tree. All of them would tree their own coon with no problem. It was just the fact coons weren't that plentiful. Hide prices were high and not many, shoot very few, got left hanging on a limb. It seems to be rare now days that two dogs will even work together to tree a coon. I like the way l. lyle puts it. Let the young ones work till they hang up and then give them some help. The old dog teaches them what they are doing wrong instead of the handler having to babysit them. Too much tree happy and not enough common sense to learn by example from the old dog taking the track on and treeing the coon. Just an opinion from someone who is not that old but grew up really "PLEASURE" hunting and hunting in comp hunts when it really was a competition between dogs instead of handlers and circle point hounds.

I think instead of tree happy dogs they should be called "CIRCLE POINT" hounds. Nobody wants to use that minus sign anymore. Look at it this way, you use less ink which saves money on pens if you just make a little - mark beside the score then having to draw a cirlce around it.

quote:EVERYONE HAS GOOD REASONS AND IDEAS. ALOT OF THE OLDER COMP HUNTERS AROUND HERE WOULD LIKE TO SEE UKC MAKE A DOG HOLD AND HTX BEFORE THEY CAN BECOME A NT CH. I PERSONALLY LIKE THEM BOTH. TO EACH HIS OWN. WE ALL KNOW THAT NOT ALL WILL ALWAYS AGREE. GOOD AND BAD IN BOTH.

I disagree with the HTX title meaning that you have a coondog though.... LOTS of dogs can tree a coon by themselves... and its true that you are the one feeding it but an HTX title carries very little weight. The measure of a dog today is how it does with competition. It is a personal choice, but whether you like the nite hunts or not they are an essential part of bettering the breeds. VERY VERY few people are going to breed to a dog just because it can tree a coon by itself. Throw it in with 3 other dogs and have it win on a regular basis and its an all together different story.

Technicality
The only big gripe I really saw it calling them winners...
How about this...
Have them post HTX passes AND FAILURES
We can all hope these NITECH dogs can do it on their own, but wouldn't it be nice to see the ones that CANT!
WELL IF WE ARE GOING TO POST THE PASS AND FAIL. THEN POST WHO LOST THE CAST. SHOW HOW THE CASTS BROKE DOWN. THAT DOG C HAD THIRD STRIKE AND FOURTH TREE ALL NIGHT LONG AND WAS ONLY ON TWO TREES. THAT DOG A & B HAD FIRST AND SECOND STRIKE AND TREE ALL NIGHT LONG. AND TREED TWICE WHEN DOG C WOULD NOT COME INTO TREE JUST MILL AROUND. THEN IN THE FINAL MINUTE A & B HAVE A DISAGREEMENT AND GET SCRATCHED. SO THE NON WORKING THIRD PLACE DOG ALL NIGHT GETS A WIN TOWARDS NT CH BY BEING THE ME TO DOG ALL NIGHT. OR BY HAVING LESS MINUS POINTS DUE TO BEING THIRD ALL NIGHT. NOT A BETTER DOG BY HAVING LESS MINUS BUT BY ME TO AND NOT THE HARD WORKING DOG.
THESE SITUATIONS ARE WHY I THINK THERE ARE GOOD AND BAD IN THEM ALL. YES ALOT OF DOGS COULD TREE ONE BY THEMSELVES. BUT THEY HAVE TO PASS THREE WITH THREE DIFFERENT JUDGES. THERE WILL BE CHEAP HUNT TESTS JUST AS THERE ARE ALOT OF CHEAP NT CH AND GR NT CH.
EVERYONE WILL HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS ON THE MATTER JUST LIKE WITH THE BREED OF DOG THEY HAVE OR THE TYPE OF TRUCK YOU DRIVE.
GOOD HUNTING TO NO MATTER HOW YOU DO IT.

I was just saying
That people were stating that there is no winner in hunt tests due to no competition. We all know that not all hunt wins are 100% legit, but there is a "winner".
I believe the HTX program is truly a good one, and a way to show that a hound can tree coon the right way without help, or competition.
All I was really getting at is that instead of calling it a win, post them as a pass.
If they could post passes, they could also post fails.
I would like to see how many Nitech and Grnite dogs out there get turned loose and don't hold their own strike open, tree slick, don't get treed without company...
I'm not bashing titled dogs. I truly believe the majority of them have earned it.
sorry everyone i ment passes
When I posted this didn't mean to start a war just thought it would be nice to see what dogs pass and fail hunt tests

I LIKE EM BOTH TO BE HONEST WITH EVERYONE. TESTS & HUNTS. HAVE HAD A GOODTIME IN BOTH. MY DOG HAS A PASS AND TWO FAILS. GOODTIME WAS HAD AT ALL THREE. EVERYONE SHOULD TRY THEM AND SUPPORT THEM AS WELL AS THE HUNTS. IT WILL HELP SMALLER CLUBS ( YOURS ).
