I shouldn't have to train them how to go and tree a coon. If I do , I might as well just go headlight them and shoot them out and not buy dog food.
I started going back to the old clubs about 8 years ago. I haven't put a dog in a hunt because of people like you.
Hunted with a NtCh for 4 weekends. Out of 33 trees made , we saw the coon 3 times. The owner thought that dog was great. NOT a dog I care to hunt with.
Every dog I've seen that was "broke" from slick treeing , still slicked too much for me.
I've had 3 dogs over the years that were what I call coon dogs.
Did they have faults? Sure they did. Mostly it was little stuff that didn't matter to me. Like too loose on the tree , or babbled with strange dogs. But , when it came to treeing coon , they made VERY few mistakes.

This is exactly why you will never have a coon dog !!!!

Not a dog alive that want slick every now and then especially with the coon rutting. You find me one that never and I mean never trees a slick tree and I will meet you at the bank and buy him or her. LOL.

slick treein'

Well first of all, I think we have extremist from both sides posting on this issue. I'm new to the forum but not to hounds and coonhuntin', so here's my 2cents. Balance in breeding is important.... If not, why would anyone ever look at a pedigree? However, very few are perfectly balanced naturally. A good handler/trainer needs to be able to realize his dogs strengths and weaknesses and help the animal develop into a balanced hound. I realize that breeding plays a big part in the equation, but something that some of the old timers don't seem to realize is that animals can be trained, and just because a dog has a little to much desire to tree doesn't mean he/she needs to meet a bullet. Do we not all make mistakes in life and learn from them? Our hounds can do the same thing. Now to go back to the origin of this thread, all dogs are different and therefore need to be corrected differently. I seem to always wind up with dogs that don't react to negative reinforcement very well and this is difficult because you have to be patient and wait for your dog to do things right, then encourage them with positive reinforcement. It all boils down to what caused the problem to begin with, and the temperment of the dog. I hope this helps.

LOL I'd be scared to meet anybody at a bank to get money for a dog that never ever slick treed cause he would have to rob it and I'd get caught as an accomplish.!

I'VE HUNTED SINCE I WAS A YOUNG MAN AND COULDN'T COUNT THE DOGS I'VE BEEN IN THE WOODS WITH BUT NO DOG AND I MEAN NO DOG IS A 100% ACCURATE. THE GUYS THAT SAY THAT ARE THE ONES THAT SAYS THEIRS HAS NEVER TREED A POSSUM AND DON'T KNOW WHY ITS TREED ONE TONITE. I'VE SEEN ALOT OF SLICK DOGS GET BETTER HUNT THE HAIR OFF OF THEM AND LIKE THEY SAID IF ITS FOR SURE SLICK WHIP IT WITH A HICKORY AND LET IT KNOW YOUR NOT HAPPY. I'VE SEEN SOME THAT YOU COULD PET FOR TREEING A COON. I KNOW SOME OF THEM IF YOU PET THEM ON THE TREE THEY'LL WANT TO TREE AGAIN RIGHT OR WRONG TO GET PETTED. DOG TREATS NEVER HURT NEITHER I'VE GOT A MALE DOG THATS ABOUT 110% ACCURATE. LOL. AND I USED TO HAVE A TREAT IN MY POCKET FOR HIM WHEN HE TREED A COON. IF YOU READ BACK THE REALLY OLD TIMERS NOT THE ONES ON HERE USED TO CARRY BISCUITS WITH THEM AND WOULD SOAK IT IN BLOOD AND FEED IT TO THE DOG. JMO BUT TRY EVERYTHING I'VE GOT A DOG HERE NOW SHE'S NOT MINE BUT IF SHE'S LAID UP SHE'LL GET LAZY AND PULL SHORT BUT WHEN YOU KEEP MAKING HER GO ON AND GET HER IN SHAPE SHE'LL GET IT DONE. DON'T LISTEN TO THOSE GUYS ABOUT IT NEEDS TO BE SHOT MOST OF THEM PROBALLY HAVE MORE MONEY THAN THEY HAVE CENTS AND DON''T KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE HAVING TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING AND IT CAN BE DONE BELEIVE ME.

To start off with I am not arguing and me and the dirty rat were LOL ing back and forth about a dog that had never never slick treed. I am still not arguing, BUT ( don't you hate the old fashined worn out ways of debating with a BUT?) But , I have a dog that if he locates and trees very likely does not have acoon up the switch he is propped up on. BUT, if I put my light up against his head and shine where he is looking I'm liable to find a coon. Not always But mostly. Where I find problems with slick treeing dogs is where there ain't nothing walking and I know it and You know it and he knows it,(If we're pleasure hunting nobody cares because they are ready to catch the raggetty bith and have a drink, because we don't drink untill the last dogs tail is in the box. Also , sometimes the dog takes an old evening track and there ain't nothing walking and he has been working and trying to tell us that he does'nt realy think he will ever get this thing up to running , if you listen, But I or you decide to drive on up closer ( then we get too close and the dumby grabs a tree because we get on top of him , which is absolutely no excuse to lie.

There, I have said it, LIE, not miss, not slick, not come up short BUT LIE. Back when coonhunters would call a liar a liar there was far fewer of them.

By the way I reread your post and found that I had misinterpreted what you said "If she is laid up" I thought you meant layed up coon and you would put a hickory on her> I now understand you said if she (the dog) is laid up (not hunted) she gets lazy). I'm sorry, for it makes much difference. I'm sure glad we never argued about it. Thanks.

As for Jackbob..he is as hateful on the phone as he is on here.
