Coonhunting is something that men have always done amongst themselves. I've coonhunted with women and did not personally enjoy it. If women want to coonhunt let them hunt with whoever wants to hunt with them, but it won't be me.
I, too, enjoy women. I have a wife, two daughters, and two granddaughters, but I don't coonhunt with them.
Men should have the right to hunt without women along.
Stop crying and go hunting!!!! Your father probably meant just exactly what he said but is going to be politically correct and not admit it.

I have to agree with you on some of that, tho. A lot of men use coonhunting as "me" time, just as some women use shopping as "me" time for themselves. ~not me, I hate to shop!~ I hunted with my husband for years and loved every minute of it. There were times, however, when we would hunt with some men that felt uncomfortable by me being there. I felt it and would go home. I didn't want to mess anything up just for the sake of my pride! How selfish would that be!

I have friends coming up to the GA this weekend who's wives are staying at home. It's the guys time to hunt. All good! I'm sure the ladies at home are glad to be rid of them for a weekend!

We probably just opened a big ol' can of worms....but I still agree with you!

I imagine perhaps your father just meant that he didn't realize at the time you were interested in hunting. I personally wouldn't overanalyze the statement too much.

In general, SOME women that want to be involved with the actual hunting aspect of this sport need to have thicker skin. I've seen a few that are overly sensitive to comments that I would have let roll right off my back. I take a lot of ribbing from both my coonhunting and deer hunting buddies, but at the end of the day I recognize it for what it is...and it generally isn't meant to be malicious. Of course, I've always been the type that wanted to prove someone wrong if they said I couldn't or shouldn't do something. In my opinion, men in this sport will respect you more if you DON'T call "sexism" on every comment made. I don't look at myself and the folks I hunt with as two different groups...we aren't "men and women" but we are "ALL hunters." If a man doesn't want to hunt with a woman, that's his choice. I hunt with other men more than my own other half because that's MY "me time" as well!

Now that I'll have all the ladies angry with me, LOL, good luck with getting started. You're very lucky to have grown up in a hunting family...nobody in mine did when I was a child, and I still can't get them to go today haha! Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy hunting with your father, and I'm sure make some memories you'll cherish in the future.

my wife will hunt any nite and against any body she was as tough a handler as anybody ya she has slowed down but she still trains alot of pups every year her own and for people for the most part every body accepts her makes her feel at home at the hunts she gets all our young dogs ready by herself and when they are ready i get to hunt them i am so lucky to have found her and very proud to call her my wife and huntin buddy. just ask Todd how tough she is lol just kidding

just like anything in life that is male dominated, a woman has to earn her way and get respect. period. gotta try a little harder, become caloused alot faster, and let the water roll off the duck's back so to speak. my father is still quite, umm, let's say, inquiring about my deer season's, seein how the pup is doing, and still telling me to get a makeover,lol. he is just old schooled and that is that.
i do agree that men want to hunt in their little man packs. of course i will agree on that. i have gotten some good sound advice from men but not the oppurtunity to learn more by hunting with them. is this a man problem or a woman problem??? husband or wife??? dont know , dont care. i will still give 1000% to turn my pup into, if nothing else, the best pleasure hunter i can ever have.
and that can only be done by me. if i want to hunt coons, i have already read a ton, spent a boatload of time in the woods by myself, and , am going to make it.
i also agree, that father figures want to protect. instinct. of course. it is brutal out there by yourself, not knowing what the heck to expect in wind storms, lightning, coyotes, etc. my husband gets upset when i go on my own, but at the same time, he wont go with me. so, if i want this bad enough for skeet and me, which i do, i will keep on a truckin.
get a hound girl and quit whining. just do it and take nothing personal.

I appreciate all who have replied to my thread. I am not an overly sensitive person, nor am I the kind of woman who cries sexism over every single thing. In fact, I can't stand people who play the victim all the time. However, when I think I am being told that I cannot do something I want to do because I am a woman, that does upset me. I do NOT even consider myself a feminist, and I think a lot of the stuff the radicals advocate is garbage. However, regardless of gender, I think a person should be able to pursue their passion unless there is a legitimate reason they shouldn't. For instance, I am a proud member of the military, but I do NOT believe women should be in direct combat roles. My job in the military is a desk job, and that's how I serve. Not even all men are combat material so women sure are not.

If my father had told me something like, "If you had been a boy would might have played varsity football", that would NOT have bothered me at all. There is a legitimate reason why women should not play football, at least not on the men's varsity team or on any team with men. However, there is not legitimate reason why I could not or should not coon hunt and be a coon hunter. Sure, there are lots of things that could happen to a person out in the woods, but most of those things could happen to a man or a woman. Granted, people would think of it differently if it happened to a woman. If that's all my father meant, then I'm fine with that and love him for thinking of my safety. Fathers will always be more protective of daughters. That's the way it is and the way it should be. Even Sarah Palin's father, who raised her to be a hunting buddy, still refers to her affectionately as his "little girl". That's great. However, to tell me I can't do something is wrong.

As I said, things rarely bother me. In fact, I can usually laugh at things that may make other women mad. However, that statement cut me pretty good, and it did hurt me. If all my father is worried about is my safety, then fine. Men and women are different. If they weren't, they wouldn't be attracted to each other. The dynamic will always be different. I'm not saying I can be a coon hunter exactly the way I could if I was a man. Naturally, I will have to be more careful on who I would go hunting with, and whether they were trustworthy or not. But that doesn't mean I can't hunt or be a coon hunter. It just means that I'll have to be a bit more cautious than a man would. And as far as going to the woods alone, it's probably not the wisest thing for anyone to do male or female. I admit that until I get experienced and used to being in the woods at night that I would not consider going all by myself. After I would get experience, it would depend on where I was I suppose.

And as for men wanting to go with no women for "me" time, I'm fine with that. If a group wants to go and have "guy time" without any women, I have no problem and would be in total support. That's no different than having a guys' night out or a girls' night out doing whatever you may like. Both men and women desire that sometimes.

And to the poster who said that my father changed his tune to be politically correct, you obviously don't know my father. He has never been politically correct a day in his life. He is so easily influenced by things. If back when he hunted there had been women he probably would have thought nothing of it. He can accept things if the right people influence him. For instance, he is a funeral director, and back when he started there were little if no women in that profession. However, in recent years there have been lots of women funeral directors, and he likes and respects them. My father is from a generation that thought boys being in the marching band was sissy. I was in band in high school, and my father always said that the boys in there were sissy and not men.

All I want is to be able to do what I want to do. I have a passion for hounds. I always have and always will. To the person who asked what mine and my father's history were, he was out of coon hunting probably by the time I was 5. So, whether I'd been a boy or a girl, I couldn't have grown up hunting with him. He did take me once when I was about 2 or 3. I don't remember it, but he said I had my own light and was following him around in the woods. I can't figure my father out because before he said what he did, he said he wanted to call up one of his old hunting buddies and take me hunting with them. My father has never been consistent. Who knows?

He probubly wanted to take you hunting with them so you could see what you were getting into before you spend the money on a dog and equipment. If you think women in the military should be behind a desk you might better go with someone else.

Okie Dawg, I didn't say that the only jobs women should have in the military are desk jobs. All I said was that mine was a desk job. There are lots of non-desk jobs that women do. However, I do not think women should be in direct combat units. And I don't think they should be in the elite forces such as the Rangers, SEALS, etc. There are numerous military jobs that women can and do fill that are not desk jobs and are vital to the overall military mission.

Pilots, tank operators there are a lot of direct combat possitions women can do and should if that is there choice. There choice is the key words. I wouldn't want to see them drafted for direct combat especially infantry but I think there hand eye cordination and dexterity makes them better than men at some things. As long as they have the mental strrength to handle the job. In other words I don't want Paris Hillton in there. LOL
