31 years with my own dogs, plus a few hunting with other people before that. Even during the "trashing" years if they wouldn't go along once in awhile I'd would drop of their track and stay straight for a bit.
Initially got bit by the bug after seeing a Disney movie in grade school, 3rd grade I think, that was called "the hound who thought he was a coon" (I'm prettysure that was the title anyway). Then of course I read "Where the Red Fern Grows" which made me want to go even more. I was in 7th grade when I met a kid whose family did some coon hunting and got invited to go along for the first time. Instant addiction!
BTW-Does anyone else miss "The Wonderful World of Disney" show that used to be on every Sunday evening? Great family time and quite a few animal and hunting theme movies on there "back in the day".

Hunting

I started Coonhunting with my Uncle J.D. Disotell when I was 11 yo. I hunted with him till I was 16 and other interests consumed me(girls). I would still coonhunt off and on but not as much as I did. I graduated High School when I was 17. I went into the USAF and got out when I was 21. I ran deer dogs and squirrel dogs for about 6 years. I got back into coonhunting about 6 years ago. I have had some sort of meat getter since I was 11 years old. Notice I said meat getter. Momma never knew what I might come home with. I am 34 years old now and would not change for the world.

About 48 yrs I'm 58 and think I was about 10 when My world changed !! I've hunted every kind of dog You can think of from half-hounds to Gr Nites !! I've found some to like and many to dislike in all breeds, but I lean towards walkers .

Posted by podunk23 on 05-24-2011 10:38 PM:

I was born in 1983 and pa and grandaddy used to pack in the woods before I could walk. in 2002 I took a long break fer the Air Force and only hunted when I came home on leave. Started back hot and heavy this past Jan. And went to my first comp hunt with Shaun Van Dyke bout 4 weeks ago.

I started with my Dad when I was too small to cross a creek 5 feet wide and 6 inches deep without getting wet. I think I was about 5 or 6 not sure but I’m 55 now so I guess it’s been 49 or 50 years.

36 years. Have had some gooduns, baduns, ugly ones, hot nosed ones, cold nosed ones, tree happy ones, curl up and make a nest beside you ones(they stayed asleep). In competition hunts I have lost way more than I have won. I have won some from someone else making a mistake. I have lost some from holding back. My tounge new more than my brain a few times and lost a lot of those. I have won some jumping out on a limb, but the majority of those I lost. I have won more casts holding back in the hunts than I have lost, but wouldnt advise it with the handlers this day in time cause you'll get blown out of the woods. Overall its been a fun ride.

Oh my god

Just turned 64 yesterday, can remember hunting with my older brothers many years ago ,to many to think about . Cancer and a bad heart but I,m still at it . Can't wait for the next pup to start. More than likely 58 years of chasing those ring tails. TOM

How Long

44 years for me. All Blue dogs except for 1 B & T and a couple
of English dogs. Have had a few GOOD ones and have disposed
of many SORRY ones. Quality of tree dogs have gotten better.
Quality of track dogs has declined. Blue dogs mouths have declined for the most part. Walker mouths have greatly improved.
I love a GOOD dog of any color. My family has been instructed to
put a Foot Marker at my gravesite when my times comes to say

HERE LIES A MAN THAT LOVED THE LORD, HIS FAMILY AND A GOOD
BLUE DOG

About seven years ago I started hunting but I've been around it since I was a baby. Three years old and I'd be up till three in the morning helping ma in the kitchen at our local club I still get the job sometimes and I still love it. There's nothing like cooking breakfast for a bunch of men at 3 in the morning and then listening to their stories...haha!
I'm proud to say I've hunted almost every breed of dog in the last seven or so years and against all the bets my uncles, dad, brother and many other very close friends have made I ended up with a red dog in the kennel... We've had alot of dogs over the years and I could name every one of them...
