But I hate to see them compared to nite hunts. That was never the intent to suggest one is a better evaluation of a dog than the other. They are different. Very different. The hunt tests were designed to appeal to a crowd that for whatever reason did not like participating in nite hunts. There are many reasons why some people don't like nite hunts just as there are many reasons why some people don't like the hunt test concept. That's fine. It's to be expected. Good dogs will do good at either...or both!

As long as we keep the HTX certification meaningful, it will have a value in today's world of coonhounds. A pass rate of 33% tells me it's being done honestly. I would not be embarrassed to fail one as some factors are beyond you or your dog's control. It doesn't necessarily mean the dog is faulty, just that it didn't pass that night. Who hasn't had a bad night hunting?

Well said!

Re: In My Opinion

Personaly I think in order to become a ntch your dog must pass a htx hunt, it would get ride of a lot of the me too dogs in the hunts. But if you did that you would also loose a lot of the entry fees them guys pay for their dogs. So I guess its a double edge soward.

I kind of like that Idea.

Who cares about entries we are supposed to be here to make coondogs.

Hunt Tests are just something new, people have to have time to adjust to them. In time some hunters will choose to participate and others won't; it's just like anything else. Tom

all we read on here is me to dog this & me to dog that, handlers this & handlers that. WELLLLL we got a test to prove our dog can tree a coon by its self with no help from another dog or handler !!

bunch of cry babys, i dont hunt the hunts because of cheats, i dont hunt the hunts because rough dogs. i wont hunt a hunt test because it dont prove nothing. my club just aint got none. its to easy. it cost to much. well boohoo !! give me a few minutes & i'l think of some more cry baby excusses why you are afraid to hunt them !!

i think some are afraid to fail without some kind of excuss !!

Good call,I agree with you,I've jugded about 6 of them and it's easy enough to loose. It seems that most off the people that complain are really affraid they might not pass. The ones I jugded win or loose the guys all agreed they had a good time. I think if more tried it they would enjoy it. Pat

HEYMAN!!!

I think it should be done before a dog can go on to NITECH it at least proves they can run and tree there own coon . Thats why I made my dog one before he was a NITECH that way no one could say he cant tree his own coon !! I THINK THERE GREAT Every one should try them , and for the ones that think that it is a wast of time try one you wont after your done ...

This is what a lot of hunters don't like about them. That statement if it should happen would shut down about every club in the country.
Now passing one to get your dog NITECH or atleast GRNITECH I would go for but passing one just to enter in open class, no way. People should be able to come and hunt in open class for fun and not have to have much of a dog to do it.

Someone said earlier that nobody looks at them. Well I would come a lot closer to buying a dog I couldn't buy in the woods if it had a HTX on it. That to me means a lot more than a NITECH in front of the name.

After reading this thread, i thought i would post my perspective on the subject. My son and i are both new to this sport. We didn't know anyone who hunted, so we've learned alot through trial and error, along with alot of reading. After reading about the hunt tests in Bloodlines we thought this would be a good place to start. I still don't have a full grasp on the nite hunt rules, and this was alot easier to understand. Although our dog failed the test, it was a great experiance. OV_blues was our inspector and was a great help to us. We will continue to work with our dog and keep trying the tests. I personally don't care about the fails as long as we are learning.
I think a dog that has both a nite and HTX title would not only be more trustworthy, it would be more valuable. I highly reccomend that anyone who hasn't tried it to do so. If you're new to the sport, this is a great way to meet new people and to educate yourself. If you're a seasoned veteran, then this is one more way to prove the quality of your stock.
Some people have said that no one looks at this degree, but i disagree. There are people that are new to the sport that doesn't know what titles are supposed to be important, and which ones are not. They are going to look at the number of degrees and titles and base the majority of their decision on that. It seems like a win win situation to me, but that's just the oppinion of a newcomer.

Htx Good Thing

Scenario:
A,B,C,D
Say dog A is a babbling idiot and takes up all the strike points all night long.
And on drop 1 Backs B on the tree drop 2 backs C Drop 3 backs D.
Now saw that during the hunt that dogs B,C,D take minus for whatever reason. And the scores are close even dog A who has done nothing but back the other dogs all night.

Drop 4
Dog A takes the strike points again. Dog B takes second Strike followed by C and D. Dog A backs B but B don't want to tree with another dog so leaves and takes minus. Dog A wins the hunt and never is the first dog treed all night MEEEE TOOOO Their are a lot of Nite Ch that are nothing but Me Too Dogs.
Htx means that dog can do it byhimself thats a Coon Dog.

I couldn't agree more. There are WAY too many "me too" dogs. If people want to hunt dogs in a group, then get some beagles.

Just Wandering

What is a Hunt test? And how is that different than hunting for hides?

Why did they come up with 4 dog casts if they didn't want dogs to hunt in a group?

What about the "me too" dog that does pass the HTX the first try?

I see competion hunting has turned into taking 4 HTX type dogs hunting on the same night. They might as well be hunting by theirself anyway. LOL

Posted by Paul Coffey on 07-20-2010 11:17 PM:

If a dog passes a HTX then he/she is obviously not a "me too" dog because it treed a coon by itself!

Thought you agreed with Sawyer that a "ME TOO dog never took first tree all night".

Posted by Paul Coffey on 07-20-2010 11:34 PM:

Obviously people are going to disagree. I'm saying that my version of a "me too" dog will NOT be first to tree and will not be able to tree a coon by itself. It only follows another dog's lead. There is no point in taking more space up on this thread so I pm'd you.

Give it up, a lot on here doesn't know what a me too dog is. Some even think if the dog isn't first on the tree it is a me too dog. LOL

Me Too dog?

What are you calling a "me too dog"? A dog that follows others ?

Posted by rmcmillan on 07-21-2010 12:14 AM:

HTX GIVE THEM TIME

GIVE THE HTX TIME TO DEVELOPE. NOT EVERYONE WILL LIKE THEM, BUT LIKE ANYTHING ELSE THEY WILL GET OVER IT OR CONTINUE TO ACT LIKE THEY DO NOT. MAINLY JUST TO HAVE SOMETHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT.

LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT KENNEL CLUBS, NOT EVEREYONE LIKES EACH OF THEM. THERE ARE DIEHARDS IN UKC, PKC AND THEN YOU HAVE SOME THAT GO TO BOTH.

I promise you I am not hunting a dog that cant tree a coon by itself.

Before going on a campaign to promote HTX. Maybe we should do something to promote Regular night hunts.

NEVER BEFORE HAVE I HEARD A DISCUSSION ON WEATHER YOU MUST HAVE 2 registered dogs to have a cast!!! ITS HAPPENING ALL OVER THE PLACE THIS YEAR.

having 2 or 3 registered dogs show up for a hunt is horrible. I understand that HTX is a way for UKC to draw a little more money, but the efforts need put into uping entries befor the need to have a registery goes away completely.

NUMBER OF HUNTS MUST GO DOWN, and performance money must go up. PERIOD
