I hope we can too John, took my Minnie female out last night to tree a coon, she struck a cold track in the creekbed and warmed it up going up the hill. I got halfway there when she started baying something. I walked in to her about 10yds. from a 250-300 lb. bear that was hoping she'd come a little closer. I called her out and the bear went 20yds further and we just watched each other for awhile. If only I'd have had a camera !!!!!

Just sent another email to the PGC commenting on their bear hunting survey that was conducted recently in PA, it showed there was no interest in hound hunting bears in PA. I reminded them that there is interest, and we have a great area for running hounds that stretches across the whole northern part of the state, and that people that train and run bear hounds, now have to leave the state to do so......jsb

runnin bear

I asked our local game warden a couple years ago as to why we cant run bear with dogs and he said it's because we have to many roads that would make access to get them too easy. Not sure if that makes sense or not.

Maybe soon they'll ( THE PGC ) give in, as of right now it seems there is a 50\50 chance that most of us in the northern counties are going to strike a bear every time we cut dogs loose.In the past year I've ran 4 while coon hunting, my dad has run 2.

bear hunting

We can not run bears with hounds in Maryland either. I have numerous friends and aquaintences that hunt bear with hounds in West Virginia. Hell we are lucky to be aloud to hunt bears at all in this state. It is a wonder we can even look at them

I go to kc's site first, then check here for any added comments. the cherries are ripe and the bears are pulling them down,lots of tracks in the mud, i know when they're around cause my dogs hair stands up on her back, and it's the only time she growls. The corn is finally tasseled here and it's time to start running the fields....jsb

I would suggest a later season when most of the sows and cubs are already denned up for the winter. contact some of the other bear hunter assoc. wis. nc. mn. fl. mi........ they have been at this a little longer. and any other dog hunting assoc. and definitly contact U.S. sportsman alliance, NRA, high up people that have alot of knowledge about legislative issues, that know, who are the good and bad guys, contacts and so forth, i personaly don't know much about this sort of thing but i do read alot about it in my hunting mags. my .02

Is a farce in Game Management in alot of areas. Bear season is one of those farces. No Spring baiting season. Can and could be done on a lottery system limiting the amount of hunters and only done in areas experiencing high nuscience problems... Also size of bears harvested could be controlled. Hound hunting, same deal license so many hound packs ie outfitters and lottery licenses. Size of harvested bears could be controlled. Regular season as they are now couls stand as is.


Otherwise, just go train on em.. we got too many as is.. My camp in McKean Co. is swarming with em. OOOPPPS Mr. Game Warden I just have a hard time breaking my COON dog off these Oh so plentiful bears.. Really who's gonna stop ya from chasin em so long as you don't admit your chasin em on purpose...

John: I've been pretty busy lately but I try to check it occasionally. I thought putting it to the top might get some more responses. Wayne, I know what you mean.I'm in Venango and hunt Warren alot and we have bears everywhere. Dogs often trash on bear, seems like there is as many bear around as there is coon.

yeah, they are getting thick, we get em here near Pittsburgh on a regular basis. Sometimes right in the big city. Controlled and limited bait and hound hunting could be done with ease here. PGC does alot of things based on public opinion and how the public would view it, not science.. This is wrong and hurts all citizens of the state, not just outdoors folks. Mark Tennent is the Pa. biologist in charge of the bear program. If houndsmen could get him on their side you may see some progress...

In the mean time enjoy those bear trashy hounds of yours, one day you will get em broke....

Had a big one in the garbage last nite, it rained hard here and i still found tracks, front foot is almost as big as my hand. He also a pile of recycled garbage that is as big as a small pie plate.Followed his track thru the goldenrod aways, headed straight into town, probably for more garbage.

I would think the PA Nite hunters, but I dont know for sure. CasB would be the person to ask, he's a member of the fox and coyote hunters. If we could state our case at a meeting, maybe we could gain some allies? If you need Cas phone number John, let me know, or I'll try to call him when I get a chance. Bill

— CHARLESTON — Close to 10,000 bears prowl across West Virginia, and the Division of Natural Resources feels that’s about where the population of the state’s official animal should be.
Keeping abreast of them, the DNR has installed global positioning units on 23 selected bears to check their movements in protected areas, lawmakers were told Tuesday.
“We don’t have to go out there and track them all the time,” said Chris Ryan, supervisor of the DNR’s Wildlife Resources Section.
“That’s what is so neat. It records it.”
Bear hunting is a $51.8 million industry in the state, Ryan said, and population shifts within the regions dictate how seasons are altered across West Virginia.
Hunters spend $4 million in equipment, $7 million during the harvest season (while non-residents spend $1.3 million), another $20 million on veterinarian bills and dog food, and some $18.4 million while training dogs, Ryan told the Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Subcommittee.
In the southern coalfields, a region thick with bears, Ryan said the animals take refuge in coal mine sites. This is especially true in Kanawha, Boone, Fayette and Raleigh counties.
“Do they like polluted water?” inquired a panelist, Delegate Danny Wells, D-Kanawha.
Actually, Ryan explained, the bears are in a zone of protection since mine installations are off-limits to hunters, given the millions of dollars invested in coal equipment.
What’s more, he said, the bears feel a sense of safety from the isolation afforded by hanging out in coal mine sites.
“They’re pretty smart,” he said.
Delegate Jeff Eldridge, D-Lincoln, a co-chairman of the panel, suggested the bears prefer the mine sites for an additional reason — the ability to feast on an abundance of wild berries.
“They wear them out,” he said.
Ryan said the current bear population is preferable, depending on which region of the state is in mind.
“Some of our counties have management objectives to stabilize the population,” he said.
“Some have them to increase population. It depends on where you are. From a statewide perspective, it’s about the (desired) number. We would want about what we have now.”
Last year, the DNR recorded 1,142 nuisance complaints by the public about bears on their property.
Answering a question by Delegate Clif Moore, D-McDowell, he said the DNR considers each bear kill on private property individually.
“That would come down to the officer’s judgment,” he said.
“Was the bear shot in the field or was it on someone’s porch?”
Moore wondered about the safety aspects of so many hunters fanning out to hunt both deer and bear.
Another panelist, Sen. Ed Bowman, D-Hancock, said the No. 1 risk appears to be hunters tumbling out of tree stands rather than posing a threat to one another.
Ryan said the DNR considers heart attacks to be the most common hazard hunters face, not the firearms they use.
“We haven’t had a real problem,” he said.
“I guess that’s a tribute to our safety program.”

There's a guy on the big game houndsmen forum that has a thread going on this same subject concerning montana. He's going about it about the same way we are, I've been following it to see what kind of success he has. I guess you can't run bears in montana ever since they were put on the game animal list back in the 20's. Doesn't make sense to me cause you hunt other game animals with hounds, even turkey's, and they're considered big game...jsb

In answer to one question, I'm not sure who is the biggest hound organization in PA. The fox & coyote hunters have over 200 members - I can't speak for the PA Nite Hunters. I will say that the Fox & Coyote hunters have a very strong, active association that chairs the annual dog owners meeting with the Game Commission. We also have very good relations with the Game Commission and have been very successful in legislation that has benefited all hunting dog owners in the state.

I've mentioned before that others have discussed this and want to move on it, but the feeling of certain individuals is that there is a proper time, place and approach to use as well as having the proper backing and research, to increase the chances of being successful. Right now all those pieces are not in place. There is a lot of work to do to pull people and things together....not sure who is going to lead this effort and really dedicate themselves to it?? One thing that is being done is an attempt to create a list of every sporting dog club, association and organization in PA. Strength is in numbers and if we had a unified voice of all hunting dog owners, we'd have a pretty good start. Then if we really did our homework to create a valid presentation to the Game Commission, we might get somewhere.

WE SEE THEM IN SOMERSET CO BUT NO HOUND HUNTING JUST FOR COON. I LIVE IN MARYLAND AND WE CANT RUN THEM THERE EITHER. BUT THEY DO HAVE A 3DAY TO ONE WEEK HUNT AND THAT DEPENDS ON WHAT QUOTA THE STATE ALLOWS THAT YEAR. THEY GENERALLY COME UP WITH A NUMBER BUT HAVE NEVER EVEN COME CLOSE BEFORE THEY SHUT THE SEASON DOWN. THE JOKE HERE IS THAT MARYLAND IS A HATCHERY FOR WEST VIRGINIA AND PENNSYLVANIA.

That time of year again, tons of bear complaints around montrose, hallstead, and new milford, one location they live trapped five bears in five days, I'd like the chance to try and run those problem bears, maybe they wouldn't become such a big problem if we could put some fear back in them...jsb
