You're 100% correct about the boxes. I really don't use buckets for coon as I have never found my catch ratios to be that good versus a good-old pocket on a hot creek bank. I run mostly water line for coon. I only set those smoking hot runs coming from standing corn or abandonded building sites with #220s. I really don't do any snaring of coon. I could never stand all the fur damage from body snaring, and could never get the hang of neck snaring the little buggers.

mavryk my intentions were not to pun all trappers, but if a trapper sets a trap with the attitude of "well if there dog gets caught in it, it was there fault they should of trained them to avoid traps" bothers me. I am talking about the guys that set traps&snares so they "accidently" are catching deer and dogs in my area..

trappers or coonhunters, trappers might set 220's where their not sappose to, and u sit here and bash them, but how many times have u cut your dog loose in a small patch of say 5 or 10 acres that u had permission to hunt and the dogs went deep onto land that u ain't got permission to be on, and it's posted! most people don't want to catch a hound, just like u don't want your dog to get treed where u don't have permission to hunt, but when it comes down too it, their has always been people bitching about the other sport The trappers are mad because the hounds can tree all year, and the coonhunters are pissed because the trappers kill their dogs with connibears. Seems like alot coonhunters (that don't trap) are the ones making it hard on everybody seems to me i've heard plenty of times "I wish coon would hit 1 dollar so it keeps all trappers at home." seems closed minded. Go on the trapping sites and see how many of them are sitting on their complaining about coon hunters. hound2, I beleave check time on bodygrips is 72 hours.

winnebagowalker, I don't beleave the reason the MTA pushed for a season on coon was over jealousy of the coon hunters getting to tree coon all year long, it was to keep coon from being killed when they were having kittens in the spring and when their hides were no good, another words coon being killed only to go to waist. Which I totally agree, don't coon hunters have a year round running season?
My neighbor lady called a couple years back and told me she had gotten me a bunch of coon from someone she worked with, they killed them in the last few nights while coon hunting. I was able to salvage 3 coon out of 19, the rest were either bloated up and the fur was slipping or the hide was not even close to being ready. This was in the month of September. My blood was boiling when I seen them coon in the back of that truck knowing they were killed for nothing. I'm assuming most all coon hunters would feel the same.

I won't say I will never catch a dog in a bodygripper, but I do everything possible to prevent it. I have been trapping for 25years, and to date the only time I have ever caught a dog in a trap was in footholds. I truly believe we trappers need to educate our peers who may be a little less careful about how and where they place such traps. Common sense and caution go a long way towards eliminating non-target catches.

AS PREVIOUSLY STATED, ALL SPORTSMAN NEED TO STICK TOGETHER OR THE ANTIS WILL END OUR PURSUITS ONE BY ONE.

Honest and open dialouge, not finger pointing and name calling, can help houndsmen and trappers better understand one another
and work together for the good of all. Perhaps some of the leadership of the state trappers associations and the state coon hunters association can exchange information and ideas on how to make it as safe and enjoyable as can be for both groups.

If it were as simple as training a dog to avoid traps I would set up a course and open it for anyone to use. Unfortunetly, to have a dog broke to traps it would have to avoid every log, fence, bucket, cubby, trail, den, culvert, old building, old machinery, cattail run, corn field, bin site, beaver dam, rock pile.......... pretty much anywhere a coon would go, LOL



I consider pursueing its quarry ruthlessly and efficently one of the things that separates hounds from "dogs". That trait makes avoiding a leghold trap trainable. Unfortunetly it also will take a hound directy into a connibear trap in the middle of the night.
