Tramp and Smoke

Chris and Clayton came by last night and picked up these two and went to the swamp. Chris said they had a good hunt and both dogs looked good. He said they ran two long tracks with trees o the end. They looked at the 1st one and the 2nd one was in a large pine and they could not find him.

Thanks for all the congrats on Shadow.

Suzie Q

I have been laid up with some kind of virus since Sunday and haven't been able to hunt. Chris called me last night and he was laughing and tickled to death. His 6 month old pup off Shadow and Gin ran and tree on her first turn loose coon and she had never been fooled with, with a coon before. I know how he felt and I was proud for him.

Pup

That's great to hear about the pup Chris has. Sounds like she is going to be a natural. Hope you get to feeling better soon and when you do, give me a shout and we will get after Rocket The Racoon or The Two Mile Bandit, Take Care.

Mr Jack

Hope you get to feeling better and back in the woods soon. Great to hear about the Shadow and Gin pup. I will let Hammerhead know she has a grandbaby that is getting going, haha. We have another cold stretch coming in for the next week but not as bad as it could be. A good amount of snow on the ground now. With another 8 inches last week. Hope everything is going well.
Take Care,
Scott

Bad Weather Coming

I'm feeling a lot better, Thank you Scott. Our weather wouldn't be nearly as cool if this wind wasn't blowing all the time. I haven't been out hunting yet. I don't think I'm going to get back out till this weather gets better and we are flooded also. Pearl River is all out of the banks. We suppose to have some real cold weather ccomming in next week. I think they are talking like thirtys in the daytime and I didn't see what it would be at night. That's pretty cool in Ms. and they are talking maybe some snow the first part of the week. Now, a few years back I would have been looking forward to getting out in it and treeing a few and taking some pictures, but not now. I'm just going to make sure these ole hounds have a good warm bed and I'm going to stay by the heater. I hope everything is going well for you and the hounds Scott, Take care.

Snow

Mr. Jack I would love to see some snow and get some pictures of the hounds treed in it but don't need the bitter cold. Your starting to sound like Mr. Frank. Many years ago we had it start snowing one night the first of March and I called Mr. Frank to set up a hunt for 3am so we could get some great pictures. He said I was welcome to come get one of his hounds to cut loose with Ole Bonnie and take all the pictures I wanted but he promised one thing, he wouldn't be in any of those pictures. He said he would set by the warm fire and wait for me to bring the pictures by so he could look at them on the couch. If it does snow and you feeling frisky just come on over and we will get some Good Pictures!

Steve looks like we are not going to get any snow, at least not this week. I think it is suppose to rain tomorrow and be in the sixty's and seventy's the rest of the week. We will be gripping about the leaves again pretty quick. When you and ole Bo get recuperated we'll see if we can tree a couple.
Take care Steve, wishing you both a quick recovery. I'll call and check on you in a couple of days.

Tramp and Sheba 11

Took these two out for a run tonight. Dropped them off an ole woods road and they went I about 400 yrds and struck a working track and moved it out and got it going for about 800 yrds and I realized where he was headed. He was headed into the back waters of the Pearl River and Tramp and Sheba was swimming, only getting to dry ground every once in a while. I got in as close as I could and called them out. I loaded them up and moved on up the swamp and turned them into a deer plot. They had feeders in there, but they were empty now, but I thought an ole coon might still be hanging around close by, but I turned them loose and they went out the back side without a bark. Sheba struck something about 100 yrds in, but she didn't open on it many times before she quit it and Tramp never opened so I knew it was not a coon, probably a hog or possum. They hunted through the swamp for about 800 yrds and I went around on another road and picked them up. I went on back down the swamp and cast them off the woods road again farther on down and they went in about 900 yrds and struck a cold track and worked it across another woods road into another property and moved it on in on the river and went down the river about 500 yrds and treed. They had done a good job and I would have bet you my boots that they had him, but If I had bet you, I would have had to walk out bare footed, because he was not there. Even with my bad eyes I could see he wasn't there. I guess that's what I get for not hunting him but about 3 or 4 times in the last 6 months. We walked back to the 4 wheeler and called it a night.

My Ace dog is a grandson of Jake. I really like the Smokey River stuff I have hunted with. Ace has done a pile of winning in PKC
(over $9300 won) and UKC. He's got a good nose but not too cold, trees layups, and has a head full of sense. I have also hunted with Hank who was the same way, but has a right much colder nose and can flat move a bad track. Must be something to it

HUNTING

MR. Jack I hope your over the crud and back to hunting those fine hounds. It will be a little while before my foot heals and I'm back at it. We were coming home from the DR. yesterday in Hattiesburg and Beverly wanted directions to your place. I told her my foot was hurting bad and that I wasn't up to visiting and she said we wouldn't be visiting. She was going to drop me off like a stray dog and keep going. Said I could stay with you a few days and give her nerves a break. I wouldn't tell her the way to your house, you can Thank me later, lol!!! Take Care.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run tonight. Dropped him off an ole woods road and he left. He was at .54 miles when he struck a cold track, worked it a while thru some bback water of Pearl River. I knew he was in quite a bit of water. e hit a tree in there and I knew he didn't sound right, but he stayed with it. I got to within a couple hundred yrds of him and walked on in to him. He was treed up a medium sixed oak near the waters edge and I could see pretty quick that he did not have a coon. I leashed him up and we called it a night. I didn't want to get back in any back water, so we called it a night. I had lost one of my leashes the other night when I was hunting Tramp and Sheba 11. I looked for it tonight, but I didn't find it.

Misty River Windy

Posted by Misty river on 02-19-2016 06:25 PM:

Squirrel Hunt

The little dog in the picture above is Misty River Windy. She is a OMCBA Mountian Cur. She is all business. The picture was made this morning after a 2.5 hour hunt on Pearl River. We killed 9 squirrels, 4 got away and we made a few den trees. Windy will tree squirrels all around you if the squirrels are there, but if you are hunting where the squirrels are scarce, you had better get ready to walk, because she is gonna go find one. I have always loved squirrel hunting with a dog. Its the next best thing to coonhunting.

Posted by Misty river on 02-20-2016 05:42 PM:

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a short run last night. Dropped him off the side of an ole woods road. He went in about 700 yrds and struck a working track, moved it out another 300 yrds and treed at the edge of the back water. I went in to him and he was treed up a small oak, but there was no coon there. I loaded him up and moved on down the swamp.dropped him off the same woods road only farther down. He went in about 150 yrds and struck a cold track and moved it on down the slough another 300 yrds and treed. I got to within 75 yrds of him and walked on in. He was treed up a hugh den tree. so I loaded him up.
You have probably heard me talk on here this whole hunting season about the coons being scarce, well I think I found out last night what was happening. Now Ever since I built my puppy training pen. When I first built it many years ago I would go over there a just sit and watch the coons and I observed them doing some remarkable things and I learned that they were smart little critters. I always hunt the early part of the night. I have never hunted very much in the mornings, and by mornings I mean around 3 or 4 oclock. Now I may hunt that late, but I have never been one to go at that time. Well earlier this week I said that I was going to put a camera on a feeder and see what time they were stirring. I had been saying that I was going to do this for quite a while now, but never got around to it, well Tuesday night I went and took my Game Camera and set it up on a feeder. There are some pretty woods in there where I hunt and I haven't struck a good track in there this whole year. I hunted in there 3 times this week and never got on a good track. Usually when I hunt I go around 7 oclock and am usually out by midnight. When I picked the camera up last night and got home and looked at the pictures, Untill about 3 oclock AM there was nothing but from that time on till about daylight, there were 3 to 5 coons on the feeder all the time an on till about 7 oclock there would still be 1 or 2 there. They had been waiting till well after I left out and everything quited down before they came out. Smart little critters. Well next week I'm going to change up my hunting hours and supprise them.

Misty River Windy

Posted by Misty river on 02-21-2016 01:08 AM:

Squirrel Hunting

Another morning out with the little dogs. I think Windy has more fun than all of us. She sure does enjoy her work. We got 13 this morning in about 2.5 hours. I had 3 of my brothers and the land owner hunting with me this morning and one of them has chicken houses and has to be back at work at 10 oclock and we usually get in the woods about 7 oclock. They probably shot up about 3 boxes of shells. I aint never laughed so much. I don't never carry a gun, I just work the dog and shake vines, and I give those boys a rough time especially if one gets away. When the squirrel moves the war is on. That Squirrel will be running all over that tree and them guys just a shooting, after while someone will connect and out he'll come. They all talk about the sorry shells they bought. We had a lot of fun.

Danny, good to hear from you fellow, its been a long time. I would love to come to Mo. and hunt some with you, but I don't travel much anymore. I know you boys has got some good dogs. How is Jay doing. I think I talked to him on this board a while back. Take care Danny and good hunting.

Tom on the left back, Tony on the right back, Terrell on the right front. and land owner Odell Ballard on the left front with the drink bottle in his shirt pocket. I sure enjoyed the hunt.

PICTURE

Great picture of you and your brothers Mr. Jack. My two brothers never did take to hunting. My Dad didn't hunt either. I think my brothers was broke from hunting after one trip with me and the deer dogs, I went anywhere the hounds went and that was to much walking and running for them. Hope you been having some good hunts, I sure been missing it. I will give you a call soon, Take Care.

"PR"Misty River Blue Ramblin Smoke

Posted by Misty river on 03-02-2016 04:31 PM:

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run last night. It had been about 3 weeks since we had been out, with all the rain we have had and the river out of the banks and I was down with the flu or something for about a week, but we are fixing to get back after it again. Dropped Smoke off an ole woods road last night and he went in a couple hundred yrds and struck a pretty good track, moved it on in about 300 more yrds and locked up treed. There was a lot of water in there and I started to him. I made it to him and he was tred up a hugh Cyprus tree. I had to back out a ways to the edge of a slough to get a clearing enough to where I could see,but when I through my light up there, he was sitting about 3/4 of the way up, looking at me. I decided to knock this one out to Smoke since he had not had one in a while. I shot and missed(some more of those bad bullets I guess)and he went all the way to the top. It took me a little while to find him again, but the next shot brought him out. smoke carried the coon out. He's about as bad as Tramp is about that. We loaded up and moved on down the swamp. I dropped him off the ole woods road again and he went in 200 yrds and struck a cold track and started working it. He crossed another woods road and moved in on the River. I knew that he was going thru a lot of water. It was kind of late when we got started last night and it was beginning to get pretty cool and I didn't wear enough clothes. He had moved the track about 1100 yrds and I got to within about 200 yrds of him and I decided to call him out. When he got to me he was so wet and muddy that I couldn't hardly recognize him. I loaded him up and we called it a night.

Steve I have 8 brothers and 1 sister. The older 4 brothers and sister are my half brothers. Mama had 5 kids when her and dad married. The older kids were Parkman's and I was the oldest of the Smiths. We were all one big happy family. My dad was a share cropper and we were about as poor as you could get(money wise), but we didn't know it. We all ate 3 meals a day and were as happy as you could get. I don't know how he would do it, but we would all get some kind of present for Christmas and some apples and oranges and daddy would give us all 50 cents a piece and we thought we were rich. The Parkmans they don't hunt at all. I guess dad influenced the hunting in us. Dad was a hunter and loved to hunt with dogs. Me and Tom were the only ones that coonhunted and Tom got out of it later on. Terrel and Tony hunt about everything else.

Blueherron, thank you for the picture of Ace. He is a beautiful hound and sounds like he is doing well. I knew the Jake dog. He was a good hound and a great reproducer. I wish you the best with Ace.

Smoke

Geremy and me loaded up Smoke yesterday evening and traveled over to Ovett, Ms. to their UKC hunt and Show. I decided to put Smoke in the bench show even though he had only been fooled with very little. He won best of breed. We put him in the night hunt and we decided for Geremy to handle and they did a good job. Smoke won 2nd place in the hunt. This win gave him a 1st and 2nd place win in 3 hunts. These boys at Ovett always puts on a good hunt and we had fun there. Geremy had a pretty good walk at the end of the hunt to get Smoke. I tried toget him to let me go get him, but he wouldn't let me.

Posted by steve bankston on 03-05-2016 06:42 PM:

SMOKE

Congrats on that win Mr. Jack. For a young hound that hasn't been hunted in the past 3 weeks that's something to be proud of. You get the rust knocked off him and he will shore nuff put a whooping on them. Take Care.
