Haven't had much time lately - why? You know somebody who needs a dog to hunt?

Is it gonna cost me? Hopefully, Andrew's hours will get better soon and we'll be able to work him more...if not, though, I may think about sending him to you.

Well, took the new gyp out (I think we're calling her Allie - short for alcohol ) and she did quite well. The guy who had her before sounded like he pretty much just messed with her on caged coons and that was about the extent of it, so we weren't expecting much.

Took her and dropped her by herself in a timber/pasture mixed area. She mulled around for a while, not staying at our feet. About 15 mins into it, struck. Kinda slow moving at first, but then quickened up and we followed her from the woods we were in to the next thicket over. We saw 3 bucks bedded down in a third thicket next to the one she was in and hoped they weren't what she was tracking, since she was moving pretty quickly now. She stayed in the thicket that was next to the deer and sounded like she'd got into a hole. There were a mess of brambles and it took forever to get to her, but there were a couple of holes in the ground and one in a tree near where she'd been hollering.

We didn't get a chance to look for anything - too thick - but we were pretty pleased with how she did, especially since we weren't expecting a whole lot out of her. It started raining, so we didn't cut Heckler loose - didn't want to drop him on those deer, either, since we'd left the shock collar at the house. He'll have to wait til the weekend, since it's supped to rain for the next 3 or 4 days here...

We had a coon tail lying in our carport a couple days ago. Heckler slipped out when I was feeding and I ran after him and snatched up the tail before he could grab it. It was everything I could do to keep him off me! lol

We took him out in the front pasture and Andrew and I played hide and seek with him and the tail... I held Heckler where he couldn't see and Andrew would toss it into a bush or across the ground a ways, then I let the pup go. He found it every time in a matter of seconds - he wasn't using his eyes at all - it was all nose. Just thought it was pretty neat...

We also had the dead coon the tail came from a day or two before that out by the kennels. Heckler is in the middle kennel (10'x20') with 2 other dogs. The 2 females are on the right end and another pup was on the left side. We tossed the coon in with the pup on the end to see what he would do, and of course all the other dogs started going crazy. Maverick and Wyatt were up against the fence and Heckler just decided he was going to climb on top and OVER them to get to the top of the pen and would have gone over the top of the fence if we hadn't grabbed him. He got his leg caught in the fence, but wasn't about to let that stop him from getting that coon! He's got a drive like no other...

Main Street Mason Jar

I have been hunting the hide off of him the last few weeks. I drug a dead coon for him and another 2 year old dog the other day. Mace found the track first and led the way. He didnt open up on it any but the track was pretty short and the scent was probably a little weak. I laid them both up for about a week and then took them both out last Thurs night. They hunted together for about five minutes and then split up. My other male opened up to the right and Mace had went left. In a few minutes I heard a dog open to the left. I wasnt totally sure if it was Mace or not because I hadnt heard him in the woods before. This place that I dropped gets hunted to death and coon are pretty thin in there. Eventually both came back. Mace appeared to have been running when he got back but I still wasnt positive that it was him. Saturday night I took them to a meat hunt. I entered him in the tree contest and he barked a steady 77 bpm. He was fired up. I went to a farm that a friend of mine owns. It looks like it would be coon heaven. I walked him in a deep spring holler and didnt do any good. We walked back down next to a pond and I could tell he had come across something he liked. I turned my light out and let him go. He crossed the fence a worked over into a really bad blowdown thicket. He opened up several times and let out a few long deep bawls and pushed the track about 150 yds into the thicket. Eventually he lost it in all that mess but I was tickled to death. His second track he has ever ran and both he did all by himself and sounded good doing it. I am about positive he is going to be a very independant dog. I am going to get some buckets out and hopefully get him on some good hot tracks and I have no doubt he will be treeing some coon here in just a few weeks. I will keep you guys updated. BTW that is great to hear about Heckler Mav.
