How many coons do you think the PKC guys shoot out to the dogs they are hunting hard in the hunts? Some of those dogs never get a coon shot out to them. I have had some handlers tell me that they could tell whose dogs were getting coons shot out to them because they started slacking off after a couple of trees in a hunt when no coons were shot out. A dog that quits giving it's best because it does not get coons killed is definitely NOT my kind of dog. Dave

Its not just the dog slacking off that you can see. When a dog is recut and it goes back to trees, then there's 2 reasons for it. Reason #1 is the dog wasn't broke to not go back or #2 its been getting coons shot out to it.

Now some dogs do operate better with getting some fur. It amps them up a little. Or they just might go harder or faster for a longer time frame. Or it could have the opposite reaction and it could turn them into a slick tree'er. I've seen both happen. And I don't like a #2 type dog. But as a handler/trainer you should know your dog and how it operates with and without fur. Some dogs it makes no difference to whether or not they get any coons.

It makes no difference to some handlers also but to others they hunt harder and more often when they can knock coons out. Also it doesn't matter if their dog is slick treeing because they can't knock them out anyway. If they aren't shooting coons out, a circle tree is the same as a coon.

I have better luck training dogs that naturally hate a coon.

Just wondering how or why some dogs"hate" a coon and some don't and it don't seem to make much difference in the ability to tree a coon?

Depends on the bloodline of dog I guess.

Would a race car driver win if he didn’t like to drive fast ?

What makes a bear or hog dog take hold of somthing 4 times it own size ?

I believe it shows that being aggressive is in the DNA more than an environmental issue.

Although we have domesticated them our hounds are animals that’s purpose in life is to pursue and kill game efficiently.

There has never been a soul walk this earth that has shot more coons than I.
But, in my present years I shoot very very very few.
To have a good dog that dog must naturally be a predator of coons.
If you hunting a predator you can save your coons.

However, if you want to shoot them go at it. I by no means have any right to tell a fellow not to after all the ones I have.

I think age slows you down on it too for some reason

I think you got that one right, age does slow you down on killing game, I am just as happy to look at the coon and leave it for another chase than to kill the coon. Same way with other game animals, I too have killed my fair share and enjoy just hunting and watching game more than killing game these days. Dave

I enjoy reading all the replies. Maybe its me or maybe its just the line of dogs we hunt. I haven't shot a coon out since february and neither one of our dogs are leaving trees or doing anything wrong really. I was just wondering if other people had different opinions on shooting them out. We normally make 3-4 kill hunts to the delta a year and give the dogs every one they tree. However, I had an interesting conversation with a hunter at a competition hunt one night....He gives his dog a dog treat when he is pleasure hunting when they tree the coon instead of shooting the coon. Then we he gets in the comp hunts when his dog treed a coon he slipped it a treat. He told me after the hunt to his dog he had been "shooting" coons out to his dog all night in the comp hunt. Now I'm not sure if that muddles the lines and rules of encouragement but it made sense to me. Side note.... i didn't know he was slipping the dog treats until he told me after the hunt lol

Watch all of the dog acts you can and see just what tricks a dog can perform and all they ever get as a reward is a treat. Treats are the ultimate reward for a dog. Dave

I would be willing to take that bet!
And I'm not saying it's me.

I am willing to bet there is not anyone that has coon hunted 50+ years and has shot less coon than I have. Might speak to why I have been looking for a coondog for over 50 years.

I've been really blessed to learn a lot about hounds from Dean Carroll and Bill Ziegler, in Wyoming. Both have been lifetime coon hunters. It is very seldom they ever shoot a coon out. As a kid I sure liked to shoot them out and convinced myself I was doing it for the dogs.... don't know if those dogs needed it or not. I know the current dog I have doesn't need any shot to him.

They say they need somewhere to go on cast I kinda feel obligated when other hunters are from out of town but not no more. I got a young dog to hunt this fall I ain’t sharing no more.
