The local PKC numbers are down as much as the UKC numbers. I wonder why those guys aren't complaining? :p
They might be complaining on this board, but the other kc board might not allow them to on there board.--

Glad to hear that. The lack of good guides that will put you in coons is the main problem for our local clubs. No one wants to drive to a UKC club, pay $20 and then have a dead cast. At least that is my opinion.

The hunts up my way have grown the past few years not a lot but some.

There are no pkc hunts around here anymore but I've been a member for a long time. If something over there needs fixed it gets fixed and it don't take 5 years to do it.

Exactly. If something is old, outdated, grown stagnant or doesn't appeal to a younger clientele, they will go elsewhere or quit comp hunting. The PKC hunters overall are happy, but if they start complaining sh!t will change in a hurry. That company's ONLY consumer is hunters, and they listen when they speak..

Oh my goodness, and you don't think that is a problem?

I get a kick out of reading all the post on why the hunt numbers are down, from fewer hunters to no place to hunt. When nobody on here will admit that comp hunting has a bad reputation for cheating. I know I'm going to get slammed for saying that because none of you fellows have ever been on a cast where somebody cheated and everybody got along like they were sitting on the front pew in church. They recently had two pound hunts locally that were not held by a coon club and had plenty of people show up, one had 70 dogs and the other had 110 dogs. Entry fee was $40.00 dollars and they gave away a couple of garmins and lights. A friend on mine won a light for biggest coon. The difference between those pound hunts and a comp hunt was you score a pound hunt with a 22 rifle and you score a comp hunt with a sharp pencil.

It's no fault of PKC.

Guides????? The lack of respect for a guides hunting spots is one reason the clubs won't get "quality" guides.
U turn ur back and their in ur spots!
I'm very mindfully of who is in my cast when I guide as far as guideing is concerned. I'm blessed to put a cast in a shoot out situation or a dry hole .
I just can't trust people!

I know a guy that won a pound hunt by scoring it with his truck. And it was a coon from a week before that he put in his freezer and thawed out the day before the hunt. So yes, there is cheating that goes on at the pound hunts. The guys that go to the pound hunts just like to kill coons with their buddies. They don't like the competition of a UKC hunt. Three dogs lose in a comp hunt and they sure don't like to lose.

And they don't like their dogs short comings being a negative

Oh my goodness, and you don't think that is a problem?
It's an inconvenience for the local guys running the state race or trying for a ticket. We've lost 5 clubs here in the last few years and 2 held $ hunts, but guys tend to drive a lil further and hit a few more hunts with a shot at truck at the end..

I have begun to think that maybe we should start giving out participation trophys at hunts. Today's younger generation can't stand to lose so when they get beat a couple of times they just quit. If we gave them a trophy or some points or something then they would think that they had won and would keep coming back. Yes, the Golden Years are over. It used to be that when you got beat you just tried harder to win. Nowadays, you claim that you got cheated or that there is something wrong with the hunts and just quit going.

Trophies & points don't interest this generation much..

So, should we pay them to come to the hunts? Apparantly they are only interested in money. Maybe the older hunters should buy them a dog and pay them to hunt the dog. Then when they get beat they will still get paid.

Another problem is the way they view their dogs. Their dog is a member of their family. If I have a dog that can't win then I get another dog. If the younger generation raises a dog they keep it forever. If they can't win with it then they have to quit instead of just getting another dog.

An overhaul of the Performance program would help. Its drop in both payout & participation needs addressed. I've seen little from UKCs new ownership that they're worried about it anyhow. It's guaranteed if nothing is done the decline will continue, we've been watching it happen for a decade..

Oh my goodness, that is me to a tee. Especially if it is something shiny. Maybe that is why they always used to say that "the grass is always greener". What if UKC just cleaned up or detailed some of their programs to make them clean and shiny. They wouldn't have to really change them. They could just make them appear new.
That could work for the club's too. They could clean up and paint their building, elect all new younger officers, get a new younger MOH or hunt director and have a "Grand Reopening". But they wouldn't have to actually change anything.

If ya paint a wore out truck, you still have a wore out truck. There's a ton of changes in performance program, hunt format & rules, that are needed, wanted, and way overdue..

Years ago with 40+ dogs at a typical Saturday night hunt them slips were a chore to get. I miss those days, but I believe they're way behind us.
