-- I have a Thyroid Theory (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928494295)

Posted by Richard Lambert on 10-30-2017 04:34 PM:

I have been wondering just how many of the "flare ups" are actually symptoms of a Thyroid dysfunction or imbalance. Especially since they tend to occur during outside or ambient temperature changes when the body must try to regulate its internal or body temp.

Maybe suppress the symptoms is not exactly the right term Richard but that is basically what I saw after several rounds of doxycycline and re testing. Numbers improved on the blood work but still tested positive but after Imizol shots she tested neg. and was still neg two yrs later.

Might try Imizol next time!

You can give one shot of Imizol when you start the Doxy and then another one 2 weeks later. Most vets don't want to give the Imizol unless the Doxy doesn't work.

The list of banned substances for sled dogs is long and would eliminate many hounds today that have taken various drugs and substances that have zero to do with increasing performance in a way that we would think. Many antibiotics, steroids including prednisone, remadyl and other anti-immflamatories like it the list goes on and on. Have a dog that had been sick and on antibiotics it would be disqualified or even given it to prevent secondary infection and help with inflammation from a snake bite disqualified, a dog that needs an occasional allergy shot disqualified, an old dog that needs the anti-immflamatory after being hunted early and late all week disqualified. Many vitamins and vitamin supplements that would benefit the overall health of some dogs would cause you to be disqualified, have a dog that is run down from running the roads and got a B12 shot you can't race him in greyhound races and probably not sled dogs.
An interesting note is that a huge amount of race horses take Thyroxine. Several Olymic gold medal winners have taken meds for low thyroid and it is not banned there either even though many DR's disagree on what normal levels should be especially in atheletes. Just like what are normal levels for a working dog?? Veternarians all seem to have their own opinion. There are doctors that believe that the stress of over exertion and large amount of exercise actually can affect natural endocrine function. There are no links to increased performance to Levothyroxine, yes it may increase the metabolic rate but if levels are to high or a patient human or dog/horse ECT take to much it would have severe health complications, increased heart rate and excessive thirst would not help a dog to perform.
To address those that talk about to breed or not to breed, a huge majority of dogs and people that have been properly diagnosed with hyperthyroidism are most likely due to environmental causes not genetic factors.
As far as doped dogs go I'm sure there are a few but it is not a big problem in the hound world. Those who will cause long term harm for a short term gain. But don't think that every dog you see winning who has muscle mass and plenty of go is on something other than quality diet and plenty of boot leather.

I was discussing that with a new Vet working at the office I use. She said that they are wandering if with working dogs the dog should be laid up for a week or more before the test is done. Because of the fact that high levels of exercise could affect the test? I have no idea but my dog come back with high liver enzymes and they had me rest him for a week and they were back to normal. She explained that she thought the same thing with the dogs liver. That over exercise was causing his enzymes to be hi.

My 90yr old grandma is starting to slip I was thinking I may need to put her on doxy instead of those memory pills the Dr gave her.

I would try those sissy pills first. Tar, have you gotten your thyroid level checked lately?

All these theories and facts reminds me of joke. A boy comes home from school, tells his Dad he learned 2 new words, theory and reality. His home work was to apply them. His Dad says follow me, getting to the kitchen he ask his wife " would you sleep with the neighbor for a million dollars" yes I would we need the money. He then took the little boy upstairs knocked on his adult daughter's door. Asking her the same question, " yes I would, I need a new car. Closing the door he looked at his saying. " there it is son, in theory we are millionaires, in reality we live with 2 prostitutes.

I did. 6 yo female, lipper bred went from a kick dirt in your face accurate dog to laying down at the tree with the coon. Put on meds she returned to normal until she died of old age at 13.
