Be a nice guy. Most "people" won't minus a nice guy nearly as quickly as they will a jerk. Or don't be so quick to minus others and they won't be so quick to minus you. If you have a lot of friends "people" won't be so quick to minus you for fear of retaliation. The way to beat the buddy system is to have more buddies than they do. Of course, you have to go back to #1 in order to have buddies. .

Oh now I get it, all these years I have been voting to minus obvious slick trees I was supposed to let them circle them. Now I understand.

I don't care how nice you are a slick is a slick and that's how I'd vote .

First step is to get away from "me" and "you". It's about scoring dogs correctly and giving credit where credit is due, and minus where minus is due, regardless of me or you.

A good experienced judge can usually set the tone for just that. Some are good at it, regardless of any handler(s) in the cast. Others are not. Taking the "please everyone approach" usually doesn't work well. Score dogs for what they do. That means the good, the bad, and the ugly. It's not that complicated and, besides, it's what's expected of them.

If a handlers vote is obviously straying from the above, then a good judge will step up and make it known what a competition is supposed to be about. And, if nothing else, report those "me's" and "you's" that need reported.

You are absolutely correct Allen, the issue is probably less than 20% of the judges are like that.

The problem with judges is a lot of the good ones don't want to judge but the trouble makers and rule benders are always willing to judge.the newer ones don't want to take time to learn the rules but are first to scream they got done wrong. The pool of judges that are quality is very small to pick from.

You're probably about right. We've all seen those judges in action who have that knack to handle things and have a way of not allowing/putting up with garbage on their watch. Empty trees don't get circled and circle trees don't get minused.

Mike Fleming, don't you agree that if clubs took the time for judging seminars to educate their members (judges) some of those concerns you mentioned would go away?

I'm always interested in rules Q&A's at some of the breed day events throughout the year, if there's interest for it. We've offered and done some in the past but unfortunately most were not very well attended. Sometimes I wonder if a rules seminar would be better than Q&A sessions, because often times those Q&A's turn into time sucking "left field what ifs" and not enough time is taken on the meat and potatoes stuff.

Allen we lost our judge on the job training back in the 80's when we went to non hunting judges on ntch cast you got to judge without having to judge your own dog at the same time the way those hunts back then were set up were better for numbers and clubs and training judges besides that you could get a 4th or 5th place without winning your cast but you had to beat 60 dogs to get a first and if you done somthing out of line and wanted to act like a tooter back at the club there was 60 or more witnesses that seen it instead of 5 or 6 jmo.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know every letter of the law when it comes to the rules, but I do have a pretty good grasp of them. That being said it doesn't seem to matter where I go or what KC I'm hunting I just about always get asked to judge. The reason being most people no that I will minus my dog as quick as I'll minus yours and if your dog is treed by its self I'll find your coon for you as quick as you would find it for yourself. It is shocking how many people call me to tell me how they "got screwed last night." Most times I tell them that no you didn't get screwed you just didn't know the rules completely. My first question is normally "did you question it" and very seldom is the answer yes. If you really believe you're getting screwed put a question on it and follow through.
