I think I get what you are trying to say....but it sounds a little contradictory to me:

"neither one of these dogs were near as high as a 3000 dollar thermal imaging device and I guarantee they wouldn't trade their dogs to two 3000 dollar thermal"

The dog doesn't cost as much as one TI device, but they wouldn't trade the same dog for two of them???????

Your original post reminds me of that Steve Martin joke where he says "How to have 2 million dollars and not pay any taxes. First, get 2 million dollars...."

The two most undisputed and well known facts about really great performing coon dogs are simple... {1.}they are expensive, and {2.} they are rare.
If neither of these facts were true nobody would need/want a thermal to check dogs, we'd ALL have a dog that didn't need checked..

Here are a couple pictures I took. There ares several different setups you can run. Here are couple different ones. First two are a chair that had been set in and you can see two different set ups on it. Price is $400 or less and it has a light that could get you around the woods. lol

In the picture with the man standing the blue area above his head is the emergency exit sign. The dark area at the bottom is the cold coming under the door. Need some insulation lol

Bruce

What SEEK unit did you take those pics with? Handheld or a cell phone deal?

Posted by on 02-08-2016 05:47 PM:

Handheld. I like it for two reasons. Has a really nice light on it that can be used as a back up light and I don't have my phone out to drop in the swamp.

Tomorrow I may have this one for sale cheap if it can't find the coon in the trees tonight. lol

just saying they didn't get broke up buying their dogs they were all worth more than sold price, you can still buy a coon dog cheaper than a 3000 dollar device that will tree coons and u will find them without a high price gadget. Don't mean to upset anyone.

No sir, you haven't upset anyone...all I am saying is that it was a whole lot easier for me to get on the phone and buy an $11,000.00 gadget {I should point out that I did not buy this thing to check trees}. I did that with one phone call in about a minute and a half....I aint seen a $3000.00 coon dog, let alone one worth $11,000.00 in about 10 years!!!! Now I have seen a lot of dogs priced at $3000.00 but they were not $3000.00 dogs by no means, or they would have come home with me.
I don't care about the money, if I could make a phone call and have $11,000.00 dollars worth of dog I'd do it right now. That's the point about the really good dogs being rare...I could make a phone call, I could blow the money and I would definitely have a dog. But it probably would not even be a $3000.00 dog much less one worth $11,000.00.
I am getting PM'ed, e-mails and the phone is ringing right now!!!

A dog is worth whatever you can get btw.

I am not sure the XR would be better for our application of finding a coon in the tree. You have a tighter field of vision which would make what your looking at smaller on the screen.

If your setting over a field at night then it would double your range if you need distance.

We had it outside earlier and a bird flew over and it picked it up with no problem.

If they work I will. lol and I am sure anyone in the business to sell hound supplies will also. You call it a sales pitch but I call it doing my homework on products and sharing with my friends the good and bad about it. You spend 24 hours a day answering questions about gamins, light s and electronic products and you may have another name for it.

When your my age it takes a little more to get you excited. I think this product has a little more. This application in hunting isn't really new. They have them tied into gun scopes and they have gun scopes tied into your I phone. You throw in night vision and there is a great big world that many of us don't know about or understand and many probably dont't care. Thats fine but if there is a tool to help me train a dog and the cost is where I can afford it, I owe it to myself to have it.

Tar, this post saved me a lot of money, I was going to buy the biggest, nicest pickup I could find, thought maybe that would help tree more coon. Thanks

That's funny because I have seen a lot of guys get big dollars for dogs that were not worth fifty cents!!!! More often than not with very expensive dogs my experience and what I have seen has been this.

I don't know about "rich"...everything is relative, but I can certainly afford any dog on this planet and I don't have one!!!!

Re: .

Bruce,

I for one am on pins and needles to see how it works for you. I've studied, researched and talked with that particular company as well. I explained in detail what it's up against here and what exactly I'd be trying to accomplish...they were confident it would work. However, I'm certain the man on the other end of my questions had never heard of coon hunting.

I imagine even in February your foliage is still thick in FL? That's my biggest issue here in the mountains, on a hillside, in thick woods, I just don't think it would work all the time, but could really help with all the pines and hemlocks possibly.

I've seen the $3000+ models do wonders...but I can't mitigate that price, so here's to hoping it works well! Keep us posted and thanks.

Posted by joey on 02-09-2016 03:43 AM:

Just a guess but I would think with this unit you would still have to find a hole through the foliage to the coons body? I'm hoping it works well.

Kind of disappointed. Made two trees last night and we saw both with the light before we used the thermal gun. If I didn't already know where they were located I am not sure it would of helped that much. It was about 55 last night with light rain and the first tree was a pine tree. Like Joey said it was behind branches and pine needles and that made it hard to see. With the lights we saw nothing but eyes and couldn't see the body. With the thermal we did see a light sport where the coon was but like I said I had already seen it and knew it was there so that influenced me. I will post the pictures when I get to the store in a little while.

This coon was in a pine back agains the trunk of the tree. Can you find him. He is in the tree to the right a few feet from the top.

Posted by Fire Archer on 02-09-2016 03:01 PM:

We use some of the best TIC's money can buy at work and I think you guys will be really disappointed at what you won't be able to see in the summer. I have never actually used them to find a coon but have looked into trees with them in the summer. The foliage holds so much heat that unless Ricky was setting in a hole in the leaves it wouldn't do you much good. The heat from the leaves would cover the majority of the heat from the coon and you would just see a blob making it unable to distinguish the coon.

I am unable to see your pics Bruce. They just flash and quickly disappear. Could you pm them to me? I'd like to see them.

Terrible. Could you adjust the sensitivity to help?
