-- feeder buckets? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928419066)

Posted by HOBO on 05-29-2015 02:30 AM:

When you use a bucket for sour corn you don't cut any holes in the bucket, fasten the bucket to the side of a tree on the ground fill 1/2 to 3/4 with corn then fill with water.

You don't have to soar the corn David.. BUT when you do coon are one of the few that will still eat it.

how would a hunt record be good in this situation. you want the cast to right a paper to atach to records saying dog won hunting on a feeder bucket...

No of course not. I'm talking about patterns.

My pup would tree possums but possums just weren't there. The way I understand it, a possum cannot use there hands like a coon can.

If they weren't there i'd bet it wasn't because they are unable to reach in a hole and grab a handful of food. You might have some bad info...an opossum has a thumb and are considered higher up the evolution ladder than a raccoon, and many other animals for that matter.

Can a possum climb head first down a tree ? I disagree. I don't think a possum can do it.

When I use to have buckets out I've seen possums on them.

lazy hunting....hate seeing plastic buckets hanging in the wild...why not plant some berry patches or mulberry trees...also I think it is changing our wildlife....like the bear that hit the garbage....just an opinion....yes I am aware the coon come to houses to cat food or dog food bowls left out...and that's the point.....lets keep the wild stuff wild...just a thought.

sounds like a lot of fun. some underestimate good fun hunting.

sour corn

when using a bucket for wet corn just dig a hole in the ground half as deep as bucket put the bucket in the hole. fill the bucket half full of corn the rest of the way with water. its that simple. not sure this will wok well if u have bears. but im sure it works for coon easy to fill n take care of. no deer opposum squirrel problems as long as u keep the water higher than the corn level.

I used to think the same way, until I moved down here! I thought everyone just thought they had it tougher than someone else, which meant their dogs must be better. But the truth is, it is just that bad. Up North, you could hunt a 5 acre patch, with literally 12 coon in it. Down here, it could be 50 acres with one coon in it! My dogs are grubbing up tracks and treeing it a 1/2 mile to mile away, and I'm told that I'm doing well! So, if you are professional coon hunter with plenty of time on your hands, then spend all night looking for that one coon! But if you have a job to get to early in the morning, or a pup to train, then a couple feeder buckets to get coon to hang out at a specific end of the 50 acres, is probably not a bad idea!

Again, it may be only one coon or one travelling a long ways, so it's not like they're hanging out there all night! Some hit the bucket at dusk, some at 3 in the morning, and they're not they're for more than a half hour, so it's not exactly lazy hunting. It's not like you pull up and they scatter!

And yes, you could plant a raspberry or mulberry bush, but that only feeds something for a few weeks., what do you do for the other 49? It's sort of like food plots, where folks rationalize how that's "natural" and a pile of corn isn't... really??? Is a bulldozed section in the middle of the woods, with clover growing in it, really "natural"??? Is the only mulberry bush for miles around, conveniently located on my property, really any different than a feeder bucket full of corn in that same spot? If it's man-made... it's technically not "natural", so should we be splitting hairs?

And speaking of "natural"... what is "natural" for a raccoon? I'm pretty sure coon all over this country, have been eating man's garbage and left-overs, for as long as there has been man around. You could hunt that 50 acres, full of acorns, cherries and mulberries, but I'm willing to bet that from time to time, you'll run one that crosses the road to check out that subdivision!

Bottom line... choose to use them if you want, for the right reasons, or choose to not use them. But don't cast judgement and call others lazy...

I also agree with Mr. Schmidt...I can assure anyone that if there was enough "wild" stuff around here...I for darn certain would not be catering to the raccoons!!!!!! It wasn't always like this, I can remember back in the 80's going out and treeing as many as 7 in one night. Now, even with ideal conditions and feeders I am lucky if I tree that many in one week. Take away the feeders and I seriously doubt I would tree half that and probably get not too far along with young dogs.

You know, you gotta wonder what modern farming practices do to the coon {really any wildlife} populations....ever walk out into a freshly combined corn or bean field??? There is not a single kernel or bean of anything left behind!!! This modern farm machinery don't miss or leave behind nothing. Even the fodder is ground up to just about nothing and it don't lay there a day or two before it is disc' under and replanted in another crop.

I can't climb down a tree head first. Does that put me lower on the evolutionary scale than a possum?

Posted by Black LICK on 06-01-2015 11:44 PM:

I choose not......BUT then I'm just a girl so what do I know... Sorry if I upset anyone. Tree my dog on aisle #10......

Posted by msinc on 06-01-2015 11:52 PM:

Make no mistake, a possum can definitely climb down a tree head first. In fact, with their prehensile tail and thumb it is acknowledged that they can climb better than a coon. Not necessarily faster, but more agile and effective.

black lick

do you hunt coon were they feed.. do you hunt on cornfields. an when cherrys are on do you hunt there..

around here we dont have alot of cornfields. we have to put a plastic bucket out to create a food sorce.. if i owned all the places i hunt yes i would plant for the animals. but i dont own them spots. so to my origanal question. were do you hunt at ,, the food sorce or there den tree. cuz i much rather look at a coon then his house...
