I say anything that trees 2nd should be scratched! Just kidding by the way!

Unless it is a smoking hot track I want mine by themselves and I want them to hold any kind of pressure. I will not hunt a dog that backs another dog after 30 sec or so into a tree, they should not be there in my opinion if it takes them that much longer to get there. It's embarrassing in my opinion for one to be sucking hind tit and tree 2 or 3 minutes after another dog does. But then again, to each their own, until UKC changes their tree rules I'm sure the 4:59 second tree will continue to happen.

A dead loner is a double edged sword, but I will take the bad with the good because when my dog wins, I know he/she did the work and didn't "pack" to win. A loose mouthed dog that packs and then will split off by itself is tough to beat, but they are not for me. I don't see either as a "fault" as said before it's just a style of a dog, some people probably wouldn't feed my dead loners, but I wouldn't feed a loose mouthed me 2'er. I see this almost like two completely separate groups, sort of like the show crowd and the nite hunt crowd. People just looking for different things in dogs. I think it wrong to label one or the other a fault.

As for percentages, I think you are seeing a lot of influence from other the other KC putting more of an emphasis on being alone because of the tree.

I guess I fall more into the 2nd catagory of Todd's original post. I want mine to go hunting immediately, by it's self or in company. I want mine to stay treed no matter what the other dogs are doing. I want mine to be able to share a tree with another dog, no matter if it is a polished coonhound or an 8 month old pup.

I'm guessing all the folks suggesting we strike em all for 50 must be NEW SCHOOL. As our founding fathers of coonhunting, originally felt the strike was just as important as the tree. (Old School) They felt it was an absolute no no, to not give a coon a fair chance to escape the persuit of the hound.

I'm old school I think as I want mine to hunt immediately, strike as soon as it smells coon scent, no matter if its standing on top of the track, or if the track is 100 yards up wind from where I am standing. I want mine to tree with a steady chop and be willing to share with anything that wants to cover, and cover when another dog has located the tree quicker than mine did.

I've never had to beat mine, they are just naturally by themselves and usually deadly accurate, but I know the ones that aren't naturally loners and people try to make them that way, usually do pull slicks

If you have 4 dogs in a cast that will not pack or honor one another, why do you have 4 dog cast, send everyone out by themselves with a non hunting judge.

New school.

I turned my first dog loose in 1977. in those days the VAST majority of hounds simply COULD NOT stand to tree if there was another hound running a track. simply put, they were track dogs that would tree (though pressure was there enemy in almost every case)

we, as breeders, started breeding for a stronger treeing instinct. we had too.

fast forward to about........1990s, and we find tree dogs that will track (sometimes) and pressure is there friend. they thrive on it, and the rare exception is the hound that wont stay hooked no matter what the others are doing..in fact they seek the situation where there split or alone.


now the side effects......there are LOTS of dogs who shine in comp, but refuse to hunt if cast alone. the dogs are far rougher towards each other than they used to be......and there are dogs who go east without fail when the rest go west.....(or north when south, ect ect)..I can stand that last type way easier than what we were forced to hunt in the old days........................

that all being said, there were always these types around even back then. all the mentioned types...its just the percents have changed as we breed for TREE instead of track.

why.....mostly because as a rule track dogs like to pack, and tree dogs like to work alone. even in the old days that was true.
