"The variation in color is another aspect of English Coonhound history. Both the Treeing Walker and the Bluetick Coonhound were originally registered with UKC as English. The Walker was recognized as a separate breed in 1945, and the Bluetick a year later. There are still tri-colored and blueticked English hounds, though redticked dogs dominate in the breed today."

This is part of the breed standard for English hounds. Mostly came from English foxhounds and then bred and trained on coon and other critters.

I prefer the blues but just my personal preference not been back into it long enough to say there is a difference in hunting ability.

I personally don't think color has anything to do with it, but some people just have their preferences. There's good and bad in any color.

English

They are supposed to be all colors I do prefer the tri colors, but by no means do I think the color of an English dog makes it any better or any worse. The English breed is supposed to be all colors. That is why a real English breeder should be trying to bread the best to the best no matter the color result.

For What It's Worth

From an outside perspective looking in, I think the English breed is very cool. I like the fact that there is not a severely strict color standard. Most English I've ever hunted with have been fine hounds.

I have always only had Redbones and the color standard in that breed is absolutely the worst thing that ever happened to it. Be thankful of the fact that your color standard is what it is and hasn't been a detriment to your breeds ability like it has to the Red dogs.

Thanks

Exactly that is what has kept the English Solid. not breeding for color. Back when I was Young. The old timers would tell you they bred for Track dogs first.

Some guys seem to think that this post was about breeding for color. I had no intentions of such. In my experience with alot of today's hounds it seems alot of old fashion hound traits have been breed out the hound looks the hound mouth and most of the hound nose. I have had older redticks that had it all. But today it seems to be less consitant in the refticks. It seems in my findings the blues still have it. I think it comes from the blue gene. But i could be wrong. Alot of guys must be having the same issues because the blues are winning and folks are looking for old blood to breed to.

Good Luck

guys and Gals take those hounds out this week in single digits the no nose will make you believe they are not running. The one with the nose will show you a coon. That's how my Grand dad did it. some dogs just won't look good at all below 15 degrees

red or blue

I am confused but am only a dumb hillbilly but I am under the impression the that tracking ability and tree ability come from mommy and daddy back to gramma and grampa ect. not from any certain color. but from ancestors genetics.

Great thread, I'll take one of each and get back with you. : ) nice to read a thread among Houndsmen with no arguments and a lot of helpful opinions. Been talking to a few pleasure hunting buddies of mine recently and I def agree, don't get to hear many GOOD track dogs anymore. I LOVE to hear a hound that can move an old track. I would like to own a pup out of some dogs that can do just that. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Happy hunting fellas

Check out my Roofus thread I have several video's of him and his pups form strike to tree. Let me know what you think about them. Below is the link .. Most of his pup's video's are in last few pages of his thread.. If you like a true hound you will love his pup Blu. We hope to get him titled in the hunts soon. Blu will be our future stud...

I have seen some of each color that are littermates that were good track dogs, cold or hot trail and I have seen some of each color that couldn't smell a hot dog 3 feet in front of there nose.
Just as I have seen some of each color look and sound like hounds and some don't of each color. Seen both open mouth track and stone silent.
Just like people the color of hair doesn't make you better at anything its what's under the hair..
So hunt and breed what you like but the main thing is breed for coon treeing abilities and traits that you like.

Not just because I owned, raised, trained and finished this one but he's the best looking I've seen....seen a few close but loved his shade of blue and red and where it stopped and started. Was a COONDOG to boot!!! GrNtCh Hardwood Uncle Sam was the only one I've seen color nearly identical, he was Bomber's Grandpa

Don't breed for color! They make'um just as good with a red coat

I prefer the all white with a black head, but ultimately I'm not too picky. But, I'd say that the tri-colors look the best.

Posted by Rocketman55 on 01-23-2015 04:22 AM:

In my particular strain of English, I seem to find that the really good blue ones seem to have just a little more depth than the really good red ones. And what I mean by depth is that the really good blue ones seem to be able to more consistently put coons on the outside of trees when the temp drops into the mid to lower teens. The red ones seem to be able to tree just as many coons, just as quick, but (for me) they seem to struggle just a small bit more in those extra could temps. Now I don't usually turn loose when the temp drops to 12 degrees so my dogs only have to be tough down to about 14/15 degrees LOL.
