Perhaps the solution is fairly close to the post above ? I can see all kinds of holes in allowing Telemetry on at all times, but in certain circumstances it might be worth looking into more.

What I would not want to see is Nite Hunts turned into 4 guys standing around stairing at a blue screen all night long and debating on how to score dogs from that. Or God forbid some guy breaking out his Dinosaur Quicktrack , turning the buzzing squelch up on high and making sweeps with a yagi all night long.

To me they asked the wrong ones. Ask the hunters not just the judges. A judge is not going to admit to mis- use. Allen said that night that the form would be available the next day to all of us. I never found it available.

I drove 5 hours to a hunt to be put in a test hunt. Boy that was fun!!!!! NOT!!!! Next time I will withdraw and go home. Doubt if I ever go back to the Battle again any way. Poor hunting area and no coon.

By the way my cast had no problems. We had a cast of good honest hunters and there was no need for the Garmin to be used.

Had family and buddies that it just didn't work out good for them.

"poor hunting area no coon" Should have been with me. We looked at 10 and scored on 5 Friday night. Sat night my brother took them hunting and looked at 17 but scored on 1. It is real dry here, but we have a lot of great hunting. Maybe you just got a bad guide. The scores were across the board much lower than I have ever seen. Don't think we have less coon, but it seems like it just wasn't a good weekend for anyone.

Cheaters are going to take advantage of any thing you give them.

Keep the Garmins out of the hunts. The Garmins work just fine the way the rules are now. Iv'e never had a problem with mine linking up during a time out or at the end of a hunt. I'm talking over a mile away too.JMO

You have a point, but if two people were dishonest enought to do that, than they would with or without the garmin. I thought it was a great idea. I admire UKC for the boldness to put it to the hunters for input before just changing the rules. Here is the deal. If anyone doesn't like it just speak up. I don't even have a Garmin myself, but I think that it may be inevitable that they will soon be allowed.

Technology will march on with or without the coonhunter, maybe a reasonable first step would be to leave it up to the cast to vote on wheather or not to use them, if the cast votes unanimously to allow there use its OK. If one cast member says no they are turned off. Just like "kcs. system for allowing spectators to shine.

Im all for it. Plus Im not mentioning any kennel clubs. May be akc, pkc,Ukc,acha, chkc or something else. I've hunted with em on before. Yep if you don't have a collar. I'll loan you one if it means leaving them in. Heck I don't care if they made a rule. If your caught looking at it. Your scratched! I just wanna leave it on. Anyhow. In my territory. Its gonna go out. Ain't gonna be none of this treeing your dog off the garmin..

I'm all for using the technology at hand. It makes no difference what kind of electronics some one else uses to me. Your dog either gets the job done or don't. I think it'll be easier to catch a slick handler by allowing their use. Ex: Handler A strikes his dog to the left when in reality his dog is to the right. This can easily be caught with a garmin. I think there's to many benefits not to use them. As far as telling if a dogs treed or not we all know the garmins not accurate enough to be calling a dog by it, if you do your taking a chance. If a dog leaves the tree and gets caught doing so by the garmin so what he left the tree and should be scored accordingly!
No matter what's allowed or what the rules are there will always be people that cheat and break rules! Ever heard the saying " The only thing a locked door is good for is to keep a HONEST man out " that holds true! It's the same with the use of a garmin or e-collar!

Posted by DERICK GOLDMAN on 12-12-2012 09:58 AM:

Im all for it at least leaving it on anyway. I was in a cast at plott days this summer, there were only 2 places to cross this really big creek with super steep banks. there were 3 garmins in that cast and we wondered around for 1.5 hrs looking for a crossing, we had crossed going to the dogs. we knew where the truck was we just couldnt get to it. if one of us would have had it on we would not have wasted that time looking for it. just followed the track back out. I dont think we need them in our hands but turned on in the pouch with the alerts off. ABSOLUTLEY. If your in my cast and dont have one ask me Ill let you borrow a collar. I'd much rather help a man find his dog with my garmin than his beep beep.

extra collars would be ok .if the whole cast was on one unit then the judge could carry the unit that would be ok

I am all for leaving them on but, this would give the judge a very unfair advantage if he is the only one who could track the dogs. Everyone should be able to track their dog and their dog only. If it is done any other way I am completely against it.

I guess it doesn't really matter to me how it works out because I don't comp hunt, but I could see huge problems with a person trying to use a Garmin to validate their call. A Garmin should not be used in decision making for any reason, and so then to hold off the arguments, I wouldn't recommend letting other competitors track your hound, unless of course everyone agrees to do it. I don't think a scorer should be able to see anyone's dog, that way they can't let their judgement be swayed. Handler calls the dog and the scorer scores. Hunting scorer or hunting guide would be an entirely different story.

I think it is pretty white of UKC to consider this and actually hold a couple of test hunts to iron out some of the issues.

garmins

i agree with roy keep the garmins out of the hunts it makes me wonder what some of these guys would have done back in the days before garmins they wouldnt be hunting when i started coonhunting we had old school gps you know a compass and your ears and i think that the cheaters will take advantage of it and i think a man who has to have a garmin to win should just stay at home and let the real coonhunters coonhunt

No offense Jimmy, but things always change. Once upon a time all competition hunts were hide hunts, but things change with time. I like the idea of keeping the dogs safe during the hunt. I personally do not need a head lamp, leash, or even collar for that matter, but personally I would feel a lot better with a Garmin knowing that come hell or high water, at the end of the night I will get my hound back safe and sound.

garmin

no offence taken micheal i have a garmin and they are good to watch to see if your dog is close to a road but like one guy said boot up the handheld before they cast thier dogs to see where the roads are or r.r tracks it takes common sense to keep your hound safe and yourself and we have the right to queston a guide on where we turn loose in strange territory the rules say that during a hunt you cant have the handheld turned on but it doesnt say before the hunt you cant so i say no keep them out of the hunts

If yall would be more worried about what your leading. Instead of everybody worrying about getting screwed one way or another. We'd be better off. I can tell who's not worried much about dog power. I can also tell who don't have much. Just from this thread. Ain't no big deal. We have cry babies around here to. Always worried and crying lmao!!

I would say no because not every hunter has a garmin and therefore the playing field is not equal. Use only during timeout!

I would be in favor of being able to have the garmin turned on.....But not look at it during hunt time.

Actually using the garmin during hunt time is a HUGE can of worms. IMHO

I will tell you what some of "these guys" would have done back in the day.............. They would still hunt just like you! I am one of them guys!

I will tell you what WILL happen if you allowed garmins in a hunt...

You can have better control over not letting your dog cross on property you do not have authority to hunt.
You can better protect your dog if he is a deep hunter in a place you know little to nothing about.
You can round your dogs up much quicker and with less fuel after the hunt or during time out.
You will not spend countless minutes and yards trying to find where you crossed that creek at or figuring out which direction the truck is in.

This is just the short list of things that WILL happen or situations that WILL be controlled by allowing use of the garmin!
To speculate that someone will cheat and not get caught and then barred is not representative of what you can say WILL happen!

Everybody wants best dog to win and no slick handing! Hard for slick handlers to tree their dog running wide open and say it's treed. Hard to argue with garmin when it's moving lot. Use of garmin would solve that part real fast.jmo

If you need a Garmin to deal with slick handlers your either need a better judge and cast members or another hobby.

NO to the use of Garmins during a comp hunt.
