Not hard to figure out ITS breeding tree power to tree power over and over. The track is bred out of a high percentage of the dogs today.Been coon hunting over 40 years, seen this happening slowly. better get some old blood ,before its all gone.
ive kept up with this post and almost everyone but 2-3 people claim they have coon dog thats just it an a bag of chips... how would yall feel ablut this...... a hunt, 100$ entry fee. tournement style. dog hunts by himself 1 drop, trees a coon it moves on, slicks its sent home! dogs that keep treeing coons move on round to round till their is one dog standing. winner take all! in a central location between north and south on government property. in the winter, coon must be brought out of the tree. no feeders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how many would be interested???

That sounds great to me. One tree the coon is not found in the dog is scratched. Count me in.
How about this!
Let dogs in open class compete and get the points to make night champion but before the can recieve championship they have to pass the ukc hunt where you take your dog out by itself and hunt it. I have seen all kinds of dogs win cast with made up coons and circle points for a hole in tree a squirrel could barely fit through. If the open cast didn't have hunting judges and honest judges lot of these dogs would not make champions. I also feel that dogs have been bred with hot nose to tree more coons in the hunts because you wont do as good with a dog that cold trails for a long time using up your time if you could be going to next spot to jump and tree hot coon.
I have every other weekend off so if you can set the hunt up on my weekend off and I will be there. I would just as soon not involve any hunting group. This is what has happen to the dogs I don't believe any of the hot nose stuff because most hot nosed dogs have the coon. People have bred dogs to win PKC hunts because that is where the money is at and they have done a great job at doing it. They have fixed the fighting at the tree by having a dead loner. These dogs don't back anything track or tree. Most dogs now days can hold tree pressure fang pressure is the problem. I like PKC at least they have always had a pay out,UKC has never done any thing for me other than take my money we as hunters have made people in UKC very rich. Here where I live xxl coon are selling for 25 a peace and xxxxl coon which are around 30 lbs are going for 30 plus. So it is very important the coon is there. The new style competition dogs just don't make good hide dogs for me. I have very well bred hounds right now and had very well bred hounds before just gave up on competition hunting. I owned stylish whites full litter mate sister. I owned medley hardwood swamps full litter mate brother sold him to Jess Dickerson this dog was titled out in about 3 months and ran at stud for a couple year. I just live to far north to campaign a dog. I live right by John Otto and hunt with him alot. Those that don't know him he was Jimmy Guess and Chuck Scheamal not sure on spelling on chucks name for about 15 + years.

count me in would be nice not to have to worry about a slick handler it don't bother me at all to get beat by a good hound. i enjoy seeing a good hound work.
When u all doing this and What place I got some place in VA That will test a dog but for sure It would be nice too see some good hounds work
dont matter to me where it is held a true coon dog will tree coon in thick or thin mine will take his tracks as he comes to them could be 100 yds could be a mile saw him tree 3 singles within 500 yds also saw him go a mile on a night coons were not moving just to find and tree one.
I would like to have it where there is coon. I don't want it like trying to find a neddle in a hay stack. Most likely this is going to happen on a week end and we will have to make some trees in two night to get thru some dogs. Someone needs to come with some rules like if a dog barks three time he is struck and if they don't tree they are scatched or something. Mine will hunt out a woods and if there is no coon she might come back or I have to go get her.
kentucky would be a great place its sort of in between northern ky has a good population of coon but a dog has to hunt to find one ukc rules would be fine they are pretty fair when a slick handler is not involved.
Re: Consistancy
quote:YOUR rite! they dont breed for consistence any more its all about the money. for my self i will not hunt one just because it will tree it better have the meat or it becomes fertilizer. i do go thru a lot of dogs. good luck on your quest! LOL and yes i do have one.

For u guys with perfect dogs how do u know in the summer time with thick leaves Big trees and sometimes u cant evan look at the tree for the outher trees around it. Not to mention dens that may r may not have a coon. Im sure some of u guys have got better than average dogs but saying that they never ever ever miss is a mouthfull.

I will make it real simple for people if the coon is not in the tree you can squall shine what ever and will not find the coon. And this is for the real slow ones if it is there its not hard to find. Here is another good indicator when the trees are bare and you have made 50 to a 100 trees and its there your hunting a good hound. When you know your dog is not accurate not a lot of time is spent shining.
Consistancy
Chewbach I sent you a PM
if you know the hound you are hunting you pretty much know if they have a coon or not i didnt say mine was a 100 percent but he will be 85 to 90 year round. truth is theres is alot of slick treeing dogs out there and the reason for most of it is money pkc and ukc hunters want a hot nose dog track power is bred out of them if thats what they want thats fine as long as hunters are willing to pay top dollar for a hot nosed stud dog pup there will never be no track power. most hunters refuse to go hunt with a stud dog if you buy a pup or breed a female without hunting with the stud first you should not be on here complaining because you are not satisfied because there are some stud dog owners that will show their dogs and their pups and i bet their stud fee will be half that of the flavor of the month i will show mine with any mans world ch or truck winner any night of the week he will get his share
Right
I dont know what trees look like in michigan but let me make it real simple down south a coon can easily close its eyes and hide in a bushy leafe big tree and u would never find him obveilsy i never been to michigan to hunt and uve never been here. Ive looked looked and looked some more give up walk away look back one more time and their he is. Thin coons here their run to death and they hardly ever look maybe thats simple enough for u. Im told yall got coons like we got opossums. If u do well its not so easy down here in ga.

quote:when the old blood got thin i would say thats when all this breeding for a honset tree dog got threw out the window breeders started breeding to get those blow throgh the country dogs and dogs that are so tree grazy that a coon taps and goes on they dont have enough sense to circle the tree and check they just tree on a empty tree but it seems to me that most of the people are into the hunts instaead of what this sport was yrs ago to go out and enjoy a night with good honset dogs and freinds now its all about my dog is better than your dog all about competion jmo

I believe the problem is, is that guys have bred dogs to be pkc tree dogs. You can win them hunts with minus points. Everybody cares more about the dollar than the coon anymore. Pelts ain't worth ****, so why not build a line of tree grabbers and win money with slicks? It's stupid, but the name of the game these days. Best shot you got anymore is to find an old man with two country coon dogs and get a pup off him/her. Papers don't tree coon, Idc how many grand nights are on the paper
I have coon hunted in 15 state as far south as Flordia as far west as Kentucky and all along the east coast states over the years. So I don't just hunt in Michigan and trust me people think Michigan is full of coon come to my house and see for your self. 150 miles south of me there is a lot of southern Michigan has coon and northern Michigan they are thin.
I've saw some deadly accurate hounds. Even those tree some dens now and again. South of me. The trees never lose leaves much. You are not going to find em all. I figure 70% is a dern good un.

Lets just pretend.
Lets just pretend u have a 100 precent never misses and never has mist a coon. U r not gonna find them all here. I dont care if they r their r not. I dont care if their two coons up a tree u r not gonna be able to see them all. I always wished i could have some of those heat vision binoculers but U wouldent believe what they cost .

Sense I don't hit the hunts anymore I hunt about 15 times the month of Sep and a lot Oct and first part of Nov are the month I hunt the most and the leaves are off about half way thru Oct the leaves are off. And when you walk to tree after tree and the coon is always there she is accurate. She made six trees the other night after about 4 inches of fresh snow and had coon in all of them and two was dens and I could still see the coon up in there.I never seen a coon track in the snow and never ran track just fell treed. And she is a open mouthed track dog. If she don't think she has got him she won't tree she move on and get treed. She don't gamble on the tree either she no's its there or nothing. But these have to be really bad tracks for her to bog on. I have hunted the dog enough to know how she operates. That if she is treed the coon is there and I spend the time to get it for her.She done her part and I have to do my part even if I have to shoot all over in the tree to get him to look. Or sent the kid up the tree. It's there I'm not saying that I have treed on den trees and found every coon but if I cut the tree down the coon would be there. She don't tree on many dens.
Snow
We dont hardly ever get snow but when we do thats the most fun ive had hunting. Its neat to see tracks and b able to see how the coon runs. Plus those places u cant hunt cause of roads we hunt. If theirs any traffic they r going real slow and thy prob. wont b no traffic so we dont worrie about dogs getting run over. Were not set up for snow here like some of the northern states so pretty much every thing shuts down. But its fun to hunt in it i guess if we got a bunch of it like some states it would get old but we dont. I know its off topic but im tired of talking bout the original topic Hope all of u have a good christmas And dont forget to give ur dog a new christmas bone. Scotty.
