These 3 week a year hunters can get a guy into a lot of trouble

The kids handled the hounds lastnight, one den tree, one possum and one coon. Not a great night but they sure had fun and that is what it is all about.

Coon season here has been going pretty good so far.. Started out good , got alittle slow and has picked up ... Dang fog the last few days is trying to put a dent into the good huntin..
Only run one old walker dog and have gotten around 50 coons so far this season plus various den trees, holes, brush piles, barns, silos etc.. lol
Not many folks run hounds around here anymore but there are quite a bit of trappers but they are all struggling pretty bad from what I hear..
Numbers might be down but still plenty of coon I think.. Have gotten mostly big boars and sows.. Not many kits.. Long long runs before they tree up too.. Had one the other night go 2.5 miles before it tree'd up..
I heard distemper was pretty bad alot of places this year in Iowa..
Has anyone noticed the yellow fat and strips on the coon this year and the smell ?? Didnt see or notice either last year..

Haven't notice any sick coon here. But have been doing pretty good for running young dogs for the most part. Have not got a kit yet but have seen some running across the road. Fog has sucked last 2 nights. Sounds like some of the trappers have been pulling a lot of their traps not getting many either. Talked to fur buyer a few days ago he told us the number on coon being brought in are down. Now rather that's everywhere or just at his place and if it's his place that could be for other reasons. Young dogs are coming along good my buddies walker dog is coming along great may need a handler for him this spring. My young blue dog is doing pretty good and may even end up with a chopped mouth tree dog that would be the first in 10 years. Been taking a lot big coon better than in years passed. Like Cornbelt said earlier i have seen more guys out with hounds this year then in years past we ran in to 8 different hunters friday night. Most were from several counties away.

It's been tough
Treed 4 Sunday night, and that was the best night since opening nights 4. I hunted a spot last Friday night that I know hasn't been hunted in YEARS, and the dogs still went over 800 yards to get a track struck. The coon are pretty darn thin...

Anybody going tonite?
LOL heck no- gonna be near 0 with windchill. Went out last Fri and didnt have any luck, nothing running. That and the snow is up to my dogs chest in alot of spots.
Was talking to Tully last night about hunting when i got out of the gym i grab a friend and 12 pack of POP and went riding around by some ground i haven't been to in awhile. Saw some trucks and some cars out saw some lights shining in the trees but never heard a dog heard some shooting but no dogs. HMMMMM. Maybe why that fella that way may not be seeing coon or his hounds getting in there deeper than normal to find a coon. Even saw a snowmobile out there go a little ways stop a light go in the tree then move on. Was going to call the Game Warden but figured as much POP i drank i get myself in trouble. So heading south back to town.
