Having fed that stuff I can say that the only Diamond Naturals food worth feeding is the Extreme Athlete. The other feeds in that line are just overpriced and don't perform any better than Dog Chow. The Extreme Athlete is good feed though.

Purina is all I use here also, like most ive tried other feeds and when it gets to be a pain to get it and the same bag changes in color and performance from one order to the next i always go crawling back! Im with purina to stay! Cant wait to try the new feed when it hit store shelves in my area.

I have never had much faith at all in a dog food advisor writing. Just like anything else, the so called independence of the study can be tainted by the money the companies pay to the surveyor.

I have tested them all in our area, and there is not one that can stand beside Purina Pro Plan Performance when it comes to keeping a hound healthy and ready to perform when you need it too. Oh yes, there are those who will charge you more for a so called "meat" bag of food, but when it is time to perform, the hound just does not have what it could have it it was fed Performance. Me? I'll keep feeding mine what i have tested myself and know to be what my hounds like and need. Forget the fact that the company supports this sport very heavily. Yep, for me, its PURINA or nothing.

i have been feeding the native level 3 and havent had any more trouble with my dogs heating up.... ran out and the truck doesnt run until tomorrow and bought a sack of diamond extreme athelete and they are already heating up in less than 10 days on it... buy it by the skid and its a little less than 30 bucks a sack

You boys must be really in tune with your dogs to be able to notice the subtle changes from different feeds. Is the feed the only variable you use to evaluate the dogs temperature?

no i dont use the feed to evaluate it i use the results it produces.... if they heat up on one feed and dont on another seems clear enough for me without all the scientific data or test

Yeah, I'm starting to think the same...Every once in awhile I get sucked into thinking I need to be spending more money and buying "high end" feed. Did recently switched to Purina Dog Chow and think i'll stick with it. I'll be honest , I have not been hunting hard lately, but one thing I notice is the first and second drop my dogs act like they're ready to die, but if I push a third and fourth drop, they actually settle down and dont act stressed at all. Seems wierd. A buddy of mine has feed the dog chow for years and he hunts as hard as anybody with good results.

i am feeding a new feed from sports Mix, hard to find but it is excellant

23/14 lamb and rice all natural, no corn an no soy, your sports mix dealer probly doesnt even know it exists.

Your kennel will be clean, your dog healthy and they will not over heat.

So do you take the dogs temperature, or do a beats per minute on the heart rate or count the pants per minute?

how exactly do you tell that the dog is hotter on one food than the other? I would think that in most parts of the country in august a dog that is running and treeing would be hot. On certain foods do they act the same out hunting as they do just laying in the yard?

he does not pant on the native at all will tree solid for hours.... when he heats up on the other he will get minused because he will shut up and when you pull him off the tree he will find water and just lay down in it.... with the native you pull him off the tree he goes hunting like he should... this was in july when temps were pushing 100 at night and hes heating up in august on the diamond and the temps are 20 degrees cooler... thats all the proof i need

Interesting. Funny a feed makes that much difference. I have fed a buch of different kinds but have never even seen Native in this area. The dog I happen to have now hunts harder than I can night in and night out with whatever I put in the food bowl so I never really thought that much about it. Good info though.

Been feeding this new feed for a couple days now. So far I have noticed the dogs seem to like it better than the Dog Chow, even my one female that is a picky eater has finished her feed completely for two days in a row instead of nibbling on it all throughout the day. Stool still solid as well.

I have also noticed just looking at the feed it just looks better, not as dry as the Dog Chow and darker in color.

I am feeding the hi-standard premium. ITs $24 for 40 and I feed the dog 20 oz. The dog maintains its weight and hunts till the cows come home . Its easy for me to get and I just love the place I buy it.

feeding a 63 lb female walker 25oz. a day.still put on weight.could be cut back more.
shine like a new dime,less stool,more energy.
40 lb bag ,feed less{no filler;corn/or soy}.works out the same as 50lb. of others.

Is the number 2 ingredient (whole grain sorghum) in Victor not a filler? Not trying to stir the pot, I just am of the mindset all dog foods have fillers. Some seem to be better than others for reasons unknown to me. Rice & Sorghum may be more digestable & higher in fiber than corn, soy, wheat, etc.

On a side note, I had the same experience Hoosierman1 did on the Extreme Athlete from Diamond. Dog heated up big time, I did not care for it. I guess many dogs do well on it, I had one that did not.

I feed the Sportmix 26/18 in the winter, and dog chow in summer. I agree that the diamond is about the worst food around, everytime I have tried to feed my dogs any of the diamond, they crap everywhere the whole time they eat it.

Guys I am going to state something about high protein.

Are you aware that not only do Greyhounds diets consists of 30% plus protein they are also fed raw beef mixed in. They aren't dropping dead with heat exhaustion nor are they ate up with hotspots.

Now, I am actually certified in nutrition, I wish not to debate this. But I will state that I have ran beagles, coonhounds, swim dogs(greyhound cross) field trial dogs (greyhound cross) and full blood track dogs. I am quite versed on what the rest of the sporting dog world is doing. I cant figure out why the coonhunters and beaglers still debate canine nutrition why do the endurance /money paying sport dogs people have it right ?. As for grains in the feed, the argument always evolves from dogs having meat tearing(canines) this is true, however,dd wild canines have and do go to the gut for their meal. Guess what those animals eat that are killed ? that's right, grains, grasses etc.

For the record I do not promote Purina.

for about 10 years all I fed was Black Gold till our distributor went out of buisiness. So I have been feeding Purina Dog Chow now for 3 years and I like it and my dogs love it. Clean up is easy. So todday I decided to try the new feed from Purina. we will see how it goes.

Atten r&d kennels... I'll give you a break since u live in Ohio. You obviously have never hunted your dogs (I'd day any dogs) in 100 plus degrees at night. I ve been hunting for 30 years and I know what I've seen with my own two eyes. I've had dogs that were grn note champs that had NO reverse in them flat out over heat in that type of weather. Quit, you might say, Treeing after about 10 - 15 mins on the tree. Breathing so hard (heaving) they could catch there breath. The only thing they want was water, period. At that time I was feeding black gold (black bag) and stopped feeding it. Went down to a lower protein lower fat content and never had that problem again. Seen this happen many times since too. I'm not a nutritionist I'm a realist. Realistically over heating can and will happen in dogs in that heat eating high protein whatever the brand.

Wellness

I feed wellness its costly but my hounds are well worth it. The best way I found in choosing a food was to look at the best products on the market (meat based) and try them until I got the best results and then stayed with it. Maybe adding 2 fingers of can made by the same company every now and again for a sort of happy meal. The thing I tried to do is to just fine what works best for my hounds.
