-- What Was/is The Most Over-rated Stud? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=89680)

Posted by John Vaught on 04-03-2006 03:34 PM:

ALL ARE OVER RATED

Because they are run at stud to produce an income for the ones that own them. Its no doubt these folks that have these top notch stud dogs are in it for the money and do well with a stud service business. The reproducing percentages are only know through the nite hunts and does not reflect any of the dog that were never put in a hunt that just could be better than the ones that earned a title and the way these titles are earned also would have to put some doubt in your mind if in fact that were won honest. So I think they all are over rated and advertized as they need be to make money

I think that alot of it has to do with what you like in a dog. What one person gets out of a stud dog he may like a lot and the guy down the road would shoot the same dog. Does that mean the pup or stud is no good? No but what it does mean is that not every stud will produce the kind of dogs that everyone likes.

IE: me and Rooster dogs. I have hunted with a pile of them and I mean a pile, over 25. Out of all those I hunted with 1 that I liked, Mich Swamp Red Heat. Nice dog and owner. The rest of them I would not throw feed at. If you ask someone else that hunted with the same 25 or so that I did they may say that there was only 1 or 2 that they did not like. It comes down to what you like in a dog.

Hunt the ones you like, leave the ones you dont. Not everyone likes the same kind of dog. Cant please everyone. That is why I like comp hunting, you can see pups from alot of different lines.

PERCENTAGES ; " P.A.D. pedigrees are a wonderful tool. Probaly the most informative breeders tool ever offered by any registry. Yet no single piece of information will ever tell the whole story. A breeder prospecting for a stud will find in the P.A.D. the tendencies and consistencies in the dogs behind him. He must however evaluate the progeny themselves. the percentages of dogs campaigned will vary greatly, though the best prospects will generally be most likely to be campaigned. THE only way to find out the best ten studs of each breed would be to literally run a P.A.D. on every coonhound alive. You'er talking about literally hundreds of thousands. And then compare them by hand. There would also be alot of disagreement of what constitutes the best P.A.D.......JUST over one pup in 100 becomes a Nite Champion, THerefore, any figure higher than that ratio suggest a better than average producer." Bloodlines 1990 Mr. Miller. ONE OUT OF A HUNDRED, IS THAT GOOD? most anything else in life would be considered a failure with that kind of %.

WHERE DID ALL THIS COME FROM?

AND FOR YOUR INFORMATION IT IS NOT A POLL. IT IS A QUESTION.

I DONT THINK I SAW ANYONE BADMOUTHING THESE DOGS, BUT I THINK THEY RUBBED ON YOUR NERVES A LITTLE. DIDNT THEY?

heck boys, if the POPE was handling, and standing a stud for GOD, people would rip it.

Posted by Brunner on 04-04-2006 11:55 PM:

Personally I don't think the percentages that the UKC puts out are a good enough picture of what the stud dogs are doing. All that is showing you is the number of pups a dog has produced, how many made nite champion and how many made grand. What about all the hide hunters that have dogs out of these studs and never hunted these dogs in compition?? What about the young dogs that are burning up the woods that get hit by a car or bit by a snake before they have the chance to make their name known?? Just because a stud dog has a good percentage all that means is that his pups were put in hunts. I think to get the whole picture on what a stud produces you'd have to go thru and look at every single pup that dog produced, how well they hunted and how accurate they were. Not whether they made a grandnite champion or if they won the world.

Overrated Stud Dogs?

WHO'S DOING THE RATING TO START WITH? WHAT IS THEIR CRITERIA? WHAT ARE THEIR QUALIFICATIONS? HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE DO THEY POSSESS?

I think we would be better served by looking at the coonhunting knowledge, coonhunting experience, and first-hand observations of those doing the rating. And then, do they like the same things that you like?

Have you seen the HBO special this year on the Race Horce who is getting $500,000.00 per live baby. He is booked solid every day seven days a week for 2 years. I forget his name. Better tell them about the 80%

You guys that put all your "stock" in how many Nite Ch and Gr Nites a dog throws are basing your decision on some pretty sorry dogs. I would Honestly say that 50 to 75 % of all Nite Champions are not worth the feed they eat. From what I have seen the Majority of Grands are pretty good dogs but not Nite Ch's. If you could find out how much Repeat business a stud dog gets, then you will know something.

........

Stylish CLOVER is in one of my pups pedigrees.........he is not even a night champion on my pups papers......and a perfect example of why an all grand pedigree means squat to me............Stylish Clover has 1,179 pups........36 grand nights, 108 night champions........in my opinion, this is a tremendous percentage based on the number of pups..........

I would have to agree. And another reason all grand doesnt mean a thing to me either. Whitey has made his mark in the Walker breed.

I never said Harry wasn't a good reproducer, I just said he was overrated, as the question put forth. You simply read more about him than any ten stud dogs, thus over rated.
