How about the hounds that have no big names.

Good loud mouth and go get treed, but not out of the country!

I personally love dogs bred heavy with the "foundation" lines- Spring Creek, Finley River and Houses especially. Right now weve got 3 walkers, and they are very well bred, as was our male who passed away.

The deceased male, Duke, went back to Dohoneys Boone, Spring Creek, Houses, and Gold Creek Mundo among others. He was a go-get-um dog with drive and a big mouth.
The male we have now, Jammer ,is a son of So.Fork River Jammin Mundar and a daughter of Ozark Mtn. Lil'l Rebel. His pedigree shows heavy Mundar/Mundo, Gold Creek, Table Rock, Finley River, and Ozark Mtn. stuff.
Our older female,Jewel, is a daughter of WORLD NITE CH NITECH PR Loomacres Rocky Mtn. Jasper who is a son of back to Tri-Color Tom Tom(Yadkin River Tom Tom) and a grand-daughter to Pac Man. Jewel's dam is a daughter of Pac Man and CH GRWCH NITECH PR Hi-Land Candy Sue(spring creek bred).
Our new female, Dutchess, is a daughter of PR Sopers Mtn. Buster and GRNITECH GRFCH GRCH PR Moores Candy. Dutchess goes back to Smiths Hillbilly Mac, Houses Clint, and Deanwood Drifter.

I think the key to a strain of hounds is using compatible hounds with heavy foundation-lined pedigrees, and honest abilities. The sires/dams of my hounds are good dogs, but most of you have probably never heard of PR Sopers Mountain Buster, GRNITECH GRFCH GRCH PR Moores Candy, PR Highland Stump, CH GRWCH NITECH PR Hi-Land Candy Sue, CH PR Kansas City Royal, or GRNITECH PR Loomacres Abigail and few of you MAY have heard of WORLDNITECH NITECH PR Loomacres Rocky Mtn Jasper and GRCH PR So. Fork River Jammin Mundar, BUT I can gaurantee you these dogs have good lines, fantastic abilities, and reproduce quality coondogs. Everyone says titles dont make a dog, and thats true- just remember fame dont make the line either.

House bred Walkers

You just cant get any better than the old House blood. We are working on our 4th generation, and have been loving this old blood. The House bred hounds will put that big loud mouth, great tracking power, hard tree power, and will have the coon, we will always have a House bred hound at our place. Our blood has Lawyer, Kicker, Hopkins Cash,Lipper, all the good ones. Now we have crossed it up with Sackett Jr. by breeding to Seth, Salt Creek Sam, a friends male out of Rock River Style, a male we owned out of Hopkins Cash, etc. When my Seth/Lipper female comes in she will be bred to her half brother that is a grand-pup of Hopkins cash, they have the same mother. Thanks

Not a single mention of Wipeout or Coma bred dogs. They both go back to Bozo, but these are the names that of the dogs that have been winning lately. On another site I would bet they would have been in the top three.Kinda interesting.

I'm kind of partial to the Harry line. I've hunted with some very talented dogs that were out of Hickory Nut Harry. They were all kind of big, gaucky looking dogs but they get through the woods really well.

I can just about tell your age.

Getting old & couldn't sleep, so I thought Iwould see whats going on out here in fly over country. Going back to the possum ( not opossom) rule days, when first strike was worth 30 pts. & first tree was worth 50 pts. & if you handled your dog good you got an extra 20 pts. A walker dog, was considered more of a fox hound rather than a coon hound. WHAT??? A REG. WHAT, why they are nothing but burn't out fox hounds. Here they come, Johnson's Banjo, Finley River Chief (I knew these two dogs personally) & way out west some place was a dog called Hershberger's Ok. Spot. And the race was on.Guy's & Gal's there have been many dogs contribute to the walker breed as we know it today, even alot of dogs that didn't look like walkers Hee Hee. My opinion would to break it down in about 5 year intervals, & then you would still have sounds like you hear going in to some trees. When it's all said & done I would say Banjo Might have done the most for the breed, they would tree. I hope I didn't make anyone to mad, but get over it. Anyone remember who Overbeck's Lucky was.

I'm sorry

I do know the differance between here & hear.

Cole Vanover......

I've bred to the Bozo dog before, man, he's a pretty dog. He's got the track power, and he can get through the timber if he needs too.....

I'm always amazed when people discuss "strains" of Walkers within the breed. So many of these so called strains can be traced back to a few dominate hounds within the breed such as Finley River Chief and Finley River Dan and the descendants of James Merchants Bawling Barney. No doubt Bozo has had his impact and in no way do I mean to take anything away from him but let's look at where he came from. A son of the old Hickory Nut Harry who was sired by Merchant's Bawling Barney. Boone himself goes back to both Barney and Finley River Chief. The Sackett hounds go back to the Yadkin River dogs if I'm not mistaken and I think they go back to Sailor.
Now a couple others that I think also have made a tremendous impact are River Bend Flag,Johnson's Banjo, and House Chief.
It appears to me that James Merchant and Joe House should get alot of the credit for alot of the so called strains of Walkers of today.
I would be interested to know what other's think might constitute a "Strain" or "Line" within the Walker breed because I seem to be held up in a time warp. Some will say that after six or seven generations you will get almost no genetic help from these older hounds from the past but I can't help but wonder how House Lipper would have existed without Tom and Chief and Joe House ,or how Bozo would have been bozo without Harry and would Harry have been harry without Bawling Barney, and James Merchant.
I wouldn't dare leave this thread without mentioning one of the founding fathers of the breed ...Lester NANCE!!
Again.. I would be interested in learning more about what you think constitutes a "strain " within the breed.

The problem is that there is a dearth of information about the old lines. Having said that, most of these people probably have not taken the time to read Lester Nance's book. And that is the other problem, what written information that is availiable has not been digested b/c of the American proclivity to live for the future without considering the past. I mention St. Hubert hounds, the French Gascon hound, and our community does not understand what I am talking about. The past is relevant to the present and should be considered when breeding.

The other issue, is that we do not have the ability to research online the old UKC pedigrees and articles from Bloodlines. I would like that service made availiable and would be willing to pay a reasonable amount for access to such a database.

A large population of Walker people are devotees of the Hounse's Clint blood. I direct them to consider the contribution of his dam, Kentucky Judy. There is a reason why Mr. House made the statement to many that Clint was the best he ever had. Where did her ability come from? Her sire Cox's Deep R. Bawling Bowser? Why is he named that? The answers are all pertinet to the discussion.

There have been posts about "grey" Walkers. Blue Cap, English Foxhound, circa 1759, was named for a reason. His blood runs in all Foxhounds and our hounds as well. Blue eyed Walkers, Blueticks, and English dogs- Goodman Running Walkers? Why does the Goodman blood produce the blue eyes. It makes a difference in hunting ability as well looks.

coxs deep r bawling bowser is out of gr nt ch MT.state bawling bowser and deep river patty --- im guessing thats how they got his name -- not sure what u meant -- i looked up on an old set of papers-- boy i sure agree with u - that it would be neat to be able to go on line and research pedigrees-it probably not all that important what deep r bowser is out of today --- talkin a lot of years ago but its interesting to me- -- - for example we see a list of studs and asked to pick a strain -- what strain ? -- takes more than one generation to be a strain--- grubbs pointed this out on another thread and i was thinking bout that when i looked up old bowser- - u get u a big old 7 gen pedigree and see how many of these different "strains " are related-- another thing is ,it is real hard to define where one strain stops and another starts-- anyways my favorite strains are nance and house-- i kinda like them burnt out old foxhounds - pete -

hmm..

Lone pine..

House bred... lipper, hayes, harry, hardwood hounds

Yakin river, includes Sackett bred hounds

dohoney bred hounds, includes sackett bred hounds.

Stylish..???? what is that.

Some of the things you all call lines are not lines but studs. Course there are alot of dogs out there out of studs but there is a broader picture, to establish a line.

STYLISH BRED DOGS

I hunted with John Wick once when I was young and in high school. I had the honor of hunting with Tanner, Crowbar, and Banjo. I was very impressed with all of John's dogs and how they handle. Excellent treedogs super smart. By the way we treed 8 singles that night I went with him. If I go back to Walkers it will have that line of dogs in the pedigree somewhere.
