In other words eat right, excersize and take your vitamins and you can get by for several more years without surgery. I do still have back pain, but its managable. I been hunting hard in these mts even some night hunts. No more fried foods for YOU

Some of the best advice yet. I had the same exp when I turned 30 (41 now) and exercise is definately the key. I had to walk on crutches for the first month cause my leg hurt so bad from the pinched nerve so I would go to the pool and swim laps. Once you get in the water all the weight is off and you can move freely. Once you get a few pounds off start working on your core muscles. I still have flare ups now and then but over all I do pretty good and can out run and do more PT than most of the 20 yr olds in my unit.

Good luck

This is also a great time to really get some obedience training in. trying to lead crazy dogs with a screwed up back hurts a lot.

Hobo, I had and continue have some bulging disc problems. My chiro told me that it is very important to do stretches. Since then I do my stretches. They keep everything loose which prevents muscles tightening up and causing imflammation which is what a bulging disc is. I feel real good when I do my stretches, but if I forget for awhile everything tightens up.

I have what I call hillbilly traction. Fifteen years ago I hurt my back in my boat. Below my ribs around to the front felt dead and I had a bulge on my right side. I let it slide for about 14 years. Last year I put a coon light belt on, tied small ropes in 4 places and hung a 25 lb weight off the end of it over the arm of the couch. The pain is gone, the bulge is gone. Not recommended but worked for me.

Been fighting a herniated disc for 3 years now. Best thing I have done is go to a orthopediac docotor get a prescription for cortisteriods and ICE ICE ICE ICE ICE ICE ICE ICE. Any time i feel mine even hint like it isnt righ i will ice it down. Ice has been the single most effective remedy so far

I am having surgery for degeneretic disk on Sept. 18. fusion on the L3 and L4 front and back of the spine. I have talked to over 100 people that has had it done and not one bad thing have I heard about the surgery. I am a little scared as I have never had anything done except my tonsils out. Not looking foward to it one bit but will sure be nice to get off this floor and walk again.

Believe me I know what you guys are going through! Mine started in my teens and has just progressed on and off through the years. A life time of contact sports, competitive weightlifting, multiple car/motorcycle wrecks and farm work since Early childhood probably hasn't helped much. LOL When it acts up it truly is crippling! I'm only 31 but half the time I'm hobbling around like a 90 year old. My left calf and foot stay numb, my thigh throbs/aches and my hip feels like it needs to be replaced. I do my PT stretches and that does help some. I can't stand all the meds they try to put me on just make me feel like crap or completly out of it so I never end up taking them. Sometimes I have to just to sleep though. Other wise I just spend all night trying to find a position that doesn't hurt. About the only position that doesn't make me want to yell is standing and for some reason sometimes walking helps right then and there but after I sit back down I can hardly get up. At times I'm sure I am hard to be around because that constant pain just makes me in a bad mood. Got another injection about 2 weeks ago and Ill tell you one thing I don't think I will ever do that again! They punctured my spinal cord and ended up having to put some kind of blood patch to try to get it sealed up. For about 1 week I had a headache that was so bad I can't even begin to describe it. I felt like I couldn't even open my right eye and when I did it felt like one eye was looking up and the other down and this weird twitching spasim in my eye. It was probably one of the most miserable experiences of my life. My head hurt so bad it made me dizzy and sick to my stomach if I stood up. Just layed in bed for several days straight and that is just not like me one bit, even crippled up I still stay on the go. I guess It did help make me forget how bad my leg and back hurt though. LOL I just don't want somebody cutting on my back but I know at some point I'm probably going to get to the point that I will have to be wheeled in there and not have a choice.

Marcus, you will do fine. Make sure you do everything your doctor tells you for the recovery. I think that is where most people fail. It takes a little bit of time and some patience. Make sure to buy a grabber, you will need it.

A few people have asked how my back is doing...

It still bothers me some but nothing like it was last Spring and Summer so far... I haven't coon hunted much this season, but did get in several squirrel hunts. The back held up pretty good on those but when I add the light and waders it messes things up. I hope to hit the timber real soon with the hounds.

HOBO,

on Sept. 18 I had my L3, L4, and L5 screwed together. Pain is gone. having a hard time getting my walking legs back but hopefully this summer will help that. Dont bend the best and am not near the man I used to be but no pain and the surgery was well worth it to this point anyways.

I'm sure the surgery would help.. BUT I had a cousin pass away two years ago a week after having back surgery from two blood clots going to his lungs..

I'll pass as long as I can.

My Husband has back, Knee & Hips problems. Doc said Don't use a Chiropractor & wait as long a he could on Surgery & that the back was causing some of the other problems. My nephew is a ICU Nurse & has back problems. He bought his Inversion Table from Sam's. It does help. My Husband takes Osteo BiFlex (xxx). Over time that seems to have helped some. (Mostly with his Knees & Hips). He also uses a GEL Called BioFreeze he gets from First America Drugs (Not RX). Which he started Using & Bought at his Physical Therapy Place. He sometimes wears a Back Support.
Good Luck with Yours

Back Pain

Others on here have done better than myself after surgury. MRI showed L4and L5 were heriated and they started the injections around 5 sets if memory serves me. Still had the same pain so surgury was the next option. I elected to have it after the Doctor said if he cleaned up the (stuff)? that came out of the disk the pain will go away. Had the surgury Oct 2011 still the same pain was there. Went to therapy for 2 rounds had around 6 more round of shots but the pain was still there. Had another MRI and this time the dr said the only way to get rid of the pain if to have a spinal fusion, take out the old disk, and put in a new one. Had the second surgury April 2012. Therapy again and several more rounds of shots and the pain still there. Another MRI has revealed the the disk below L5 has now ruptured and I have scaring from sugury. I guess what I am saying is if you have surgury check out the dr and do not be afraid to get a second opinion. As I have now started to find another surgin myself but should have done it earlier. Good luck and God bless
