and then the other dogs will break their necks to get your dog who done the work to get the track lined out and started and then their quick treeing comp dog gets all the credit for treeing it.

But competition coonhunters...lol...they all seem to want a dog to head off on its own...why ?...so they can get first strike and first tree...lol...i just never could figure that out...of course you get first strike and tree...if their by themselves...they are the only dog on that track!!!....I'd rather the dogs pack together....if my dog isn't fast enough to get first strike or first tree...i'll humbly take the loss and admit i was beat by a better dog.
YOU NO I USED TO BE A PLEASURE HUNTER ,

I GUESS IF YOU DONT GET OUT MUCH YOU WOULDNT UNDERSTAND, DO I CUT ON YOUR STYLE OF DOG ?? NO HUNT WHAT YOU WANT I COULD CARE LESS BUT DONT COME ON HERE AND FLOP YOUR JAWS ABOUT SOME THING YOU DONT UNDERSTAND, UNLESS OF COURSE YOU WANT GUYS LIKE ME THINKING YOUR @#$!@#$
ANOTHER THING ONLY 1 DOG GETS FIRST STRIKE THEY DONT ALL GET FIRST STRIKE JUST BECAUSE THEY GO FIND THERE OWN TRACK,

i used to comp hunt havent in several years my dogs act the same weather i am by myself at a hunt or with 2 freinds sometimes they go 100 yards sometimes a mile depends where the coon is they wont quit a track to go to another dog or leave a tree but if a dog strikes 100 feet away they will go check it if its a coon its a dam good race to the tree if not its the last time they will check that dog

Posted by bricklayer on 03-17-2012 12:19 PM:

no need to get offended if your a pleasure hunter or a competition hunter.....They both have there place.....And both have good dogs and bad dogs.....just two different types of hunting....

competition hunting is faster paced..is more about treeing as many coon as you can in the time allotted.

Pleasure hunting on the other hand is also about treeing coon..but without the pressure or time clock.

Last night i went out alone..cut the dog loose..he struck up on a bench of really big timber..not sure why but he always has trouble in there...has alot of slick trees..probably 40% of the time..when he treed i knew it was empty before i shined it...i could tell by how he was treeing...leashed him up..headed up another big hollow..i was sitting up against a big tree listening...He was quiet for a spell and i thought to myself..he'll be opening soon..no sooner thought that and he did..funny how ya get to know your dog...he found his tree and had his coon.

headed off in another direction and again i was sitting in the dark up against a big oak..wasn't sure where he was at...didn't matter..he'd be back..might be 15 min might be 45min..but he'd check back..funny how he always knows where i am..only time he might not come back is when he's with another dog......he treed two more before we went home.......that's a typical pleasure hunt...easy and laid back.....it's all in what you like

goodtimekennel.................you really need to take a chill pill friend....don't be so quickly offended....there was no offence meant......

Posted by bricklayer on 03-17-2012 12:33 PM:

And to think one type of hound is better than another is silly.

ive hunted with some really good competition dogs...ive hunted with some that were really good and used for both....and ive hunted with some really good ones that never have or never will be entered in a nite hunt.

the pleasure guys say the competition dogs are all slick treeing idiots...lol...that's just plain nonsense....

And the competition guys think the only good dogs are dogs with titles....lol...that's just plain nonsense also

Posted by bricklayer on 03-17-2012 01:04 PM:

And to clarify...things...goodtimekennel......where in my post did i say they ( ALL ) dogs....get first strike points?.......what i was saying was...if they all head in different directions....9 times out of 10 the dog to recieve first strike will be the dog that crosses scent first...that may be because he has a lot of coon sense...or it may be just because he crossed scent 100 yds out...when the other dogs didn't cross scent till they were 300 yds out......so yes he recieves first strike because he crossed scent first....and no other dog was with him to beat opening first......
simply put.. the only way to tell who has the best dog is if they are all working the same track..that put's them all on even ground so to speak

mabye your the one that needs to get out a little more....i never busted on or was offended by your style dog....just voicing my opinion.......chill

If yall didnt list what breed of hound yall hunt in your signature lines. I could about tell you what breed everyone posting on this thread hunted!!! You want see any walker hunters crying much about a dog getting alone. English either. Now the bluetickers will raise sand about it. They wanna hear a race they claim! Ol blues way is best even if he cant win a hunt.. Gotta love them blue dogs lmao!!!! Bout like the cur men but I thought curs were silent trailers mostly??? Neither for the most part wants to walk alone to get a split treed dog.Dont want a dog that will hunt its heart out trying to find one. They get one like that. They sell it. Black dog owners dont give a rip lol.. Red dog owners stay pretty quite about the whole thing. I have no clue what plott people think. I dont know none of them

I hope when you refer to cur men you ain't talking about leopards. I can't speak for the entire breed as a whole but the one I hunt sure doesn't match your description. The one I hunt has a mouth like a bluetick, drive and get in the dark like a walker and accuracy like, well I guess like a Leopard! I hunted him with two walkers last night and one of them is one that I think pretty highly of. The leopard flat put on a coon treeing clinic. He made four trees and all four of them had a coon. Three of them where all by himself one of his trees he was split by about five feet from the other two dogs and he had two coons in his tree and they where plain slick. Sat on his but and never once looked at their tree. Does pretty good in the hunts too but when I wanna pleasure hunt he is the only dog I grab cause he handles like a border collie.

I thought I was the only one who still liked the old style coonhound. The type that showed their ability to dominate a coon hunt without always having to be a pain in the arsh to do it.I'm glad to see there are a few more like me out there!!!If you prefer the lone-wolf type dog then I respect Your right to enjoy your type dog, just don't condemn me for likeing what I like.

i have seen dogs out of the same litter that some were comp hunted and the others were pleasure hunted. the pleasure dogs got treed just as fast as the comp dogs from that litter. so for anyone to say a comp dog is better than a pleasure dog is insane. some guys buy really well bred dogs and never even send the papers off. they just enjoy coon hunting. and another man can buy a dog from the same litter and finish him out. I think pleasure hunters are harder on their dogs at times. Most will not tolerate not having a coon. were as some folks are just happy to make trees.

LOL LOL LOL yea because we all know when you cast your dog to mine treed 300 yards away and it runs to it as fast as it can and covers for 75, we all know how hard ol blue worked to receive plus points: On a track it had zero partake in.

But hey keep liking that style and go enter some PKC hunts and tell us how that 25 feels everytime.

Sat i was at a night hunt..there were far far more walkers than other breeds.
But while hunting i was impressed by the fact that depending how things went...any one of those dogs could have won....As far as hunting drive...i was lucky to be on a cast of mixed breeds...wasn't much difference.between them..i watched redbones, english ect..hunt just as deep and hard as any walker..And vice versa...It was a tough night to hunt regardless of breed....i was also very impressed by the fact that really any good coondog regardless of whether it was a so called competition hound or a pleasure hound could have easily walked away with the win.

I was also glad to be with a great bunch of guy's...i guess coonhunters have alway's chided each other as to who has the best dog..or best breed.. part of the fun.
I often find myself looking at hounds of various breeds...and thinking...that's a nice hound..be it a walker, english, b&t, bluetick or redbone..if it's a good coonhound i'm not color blind..I prefer redbones..i'll most alway's pick a good redbone over the others...just what i like.
As a pleasure hunter be fully aware that their are some very good competition hounds....
As a competition hunter be fully aware that a guy could bring a good "PR" pleasure hound tied out back of the barn and enter one of the big hunts and totally walk away with it..
All in fun
But the fun stops when someones desire to win becomes so strong..we lose our ability to both win and lose with dignity.

Along with that last post...i will still stick to my opinion on..breeding for quick strike, first tree, stay put tree dogs..with or without company....over independence...any day .simply because
For example ...i had a male dog, been dead 5 or so yrs now. He was here as a pup , and died here as an old dog.
He was most of the time a first track, first tree, very accurate dog , with or without company.....sadly he was also mean at the tree. He simply would not tolerate another face barking dog , or a dog that jacked the tree...so he was worthless as a competition dog.

you could have bred all the get in deep, get gone ,and get by yourself into your dog you want!!!... but if that male of mine decided he was going to go with your dog.. there is NOTHING!!!!....i mean NOTHING!! you could have done about it...and your dog best would have had a whole lot more going for him than just a get gone get by himself hunting style....Or my male would have taken first strike and first tree from you every time.

Posted by bluetickman2002 on 03-20-2012 12:59 AM:

carry the gps collar while you walk the coon on a leash about a mile put the coon up a tree and tie him there come back about 2 hours later with the collar on the dog cut him loose and see what ya got it aint that hard lyle lol dont laugh to hard ive done it

I like to comp. hunt and I don't have and don't want a dog to get by itself. A dog that runs ahead to get away from the other dogs does not get first strike a lot of the time. They will get first tree by them selves though.
I beat one with a pup that didn't know much though. The dog was treed on a coon every time we found him but got out of hearing every time we dumped. Score our tree and call time out so he could find his dog.
Just get them in thin coon. : )
I don't want anything that wont compete on a track against another dog but in thick coon they are hard to beat the way the rules are now. If the rules aren't changed that is the way the hounds will be bred to hunt though.

Good answer !

I asked him when we hunt with other dogs who usually gets 1st strike. His reply was Driver. I then asked who gets 1st tree. He replied usually Driver. I then asked how is he a me-to dog if he is leading a track from strike to tree?

Ditto !!
