Lets look at this situation from another perspective. Here we have a "big" rqe with three grown men and an eleven year old child, all hunting for that qualifying win. It has already been admitted the kid was winning the cast at the time of the scratch and the OP's dog was slick. Seems to me to be a classic case of "if you can't beat em, scratch em". In my opinion, although UKC lists this particular infraction as a scratchable offense, it is one of the more minor ones. As soon as you saw the kid starting to squall you could have stepped in and given him a warning, which would have taught him something as well as allowed him to continue enjoying the hunt. All this would have taken approximately 5 seconds. If 5
seconds of squalling is going to "screw up" At your dog, maybe its time to reevaluate whats on the end of your lead strap. At our club, we go to great lengths to involve and educate youth coming into the sport. Doing something like this at one of our events to an 11 year old for a cast win would result in you being asked not to return.

Im all for getting kids involved as I employ a couple youth handlers but how can you call breaking one rule more serious than another.. It is a black and white rule with plain consequeses.. If the kids dog had eaten up another dog on the cast should he just get a slap on the wrist because hes a kid? No he would have been scratched just the same.. I dont know about everybody else but I dont babysit everybody else on the cast when Im shining.. If anybodys at fault it should be the kids dad as he was the only person there with the responsibility of watching his kid.. We live and learn. Thats what life is about and Im sure the boy will know better next time..

This has probably been answered But what was he doing in an Rqe anyway instead of riding the ponies on a merry goaround? Youth hunts are funsies and games but RQE are not. He is competeing for Big Boy Toys . Ha Ha and he sneaks one out by pinning the tail on the donkey??

Yall don't go turn yourselves in when you look down and realize you are speeding ... if a little piece of trash blows out of your truck ... and if you do get pulled over ... you are hoping the cop is in a good mood and lets you off ... or the judge if it gets that far.

... high horse is not a breed , of course some rules and laws are more important than others and every single one of us wants some slack when we break them ...

The thing about teaching or preaching ... it's best done with a closed mouth because even kids are smart enough to ignore your yapping and can see the difference between walk , walk and talk , talk ....

Well, somewhere along the line you are gonna have to tell the world who the rules apply to and who they don't, at what age you become accountable and what rules are major, what rules are minor. Which ones do we enforce, which ones do we sluff off? And who decides this? You figure all that out if you want to. I'll stick to the rulebook with zero regard for how old you are or what sex you are are and you will know that up front.
Kids can take it, it really doesn't even faze them. It's the adults that screw it all up. Bunch of men acting like friggin soccer moms.

I agree, everyone at some point should know the rules and be accountable for their actions, but this is an 11 year old child we're talking about. Half the grown men that come to these hunts don't know or understand the rulebook, yet an 11 year old is expected to know it backwards and forwards? Any sensible adult knows thats unrealistic. This is where we come in, to teach these young people things about the hunts that will save them some trouble in the future. I disagree with the notion that scratching the kid taught him anything worthwhile. If he recieves this kind of treatment at every hunt, all hes going to learn is to screw somebody else before they can screw him. Don't misunderstand me, i don't advocate letting someone get away with murder in a hunt due to age, but this was a minor rule infraction that shouldn't affect a well trained hound to begin with. This seems to be a clearcut case of someone knocking this child out of the hunt due to fear that their dog couldn't beat his. Doing things like this repeatedly to a young handler will do nothing but create the type of hunter that is not welcome at our local events.

AFFRAID OF GETTING BEAT?

I agree Jim A, RQE or NO RQE!!!!! THESE KIDS ARE (OUR) NEXT GENERATION IN THE WORLD OF COON HUNTING AND YOU'RE GOING TO END UP RUINING THAT KIDS TASTE IN HIS MOUTH FOR COMPETITION. Ok, I can uderstand about a grown up but not a youngan. I keep my mouth shut on alot of stuff on here but scratching a youngan when he could of just been worned. Aww come on. What if it was your youngan? Rules are rules, I get that but he is just a youngan. At least he wasn't play a dog gone video game.

I would like to know what UKCs view point is on allowing anybody to slide on a rule infraction that plainly states the consequences.. I seen UKC bar 2 ppl one being a 12yo girl because there was the only 2 dogs left on the cast and they scored 2 coons in 10 min on red hot feeders. the reason she was barred is they said it wasnt possible to do in 10min they said that it wasnt possible with 10 min left if you waited the 5 minutes for the tree to close. The thing is both dogs were treed?
