Forget the $5 over charge, it was given back so the room cost $25 and then $2 to the clerk =$27 total spent. ---$9 each.

they paid 30 for the room then got 5 back because it actually only cost 25 THE ROOM COST 25 they gave a 2 dollar tip and kept a dollar each. so they spent 27. Like the one guy said they essentially got back 1.6666667 each then they gave the clerk .6666667 each. its all adds up

wow... If the room actually cost $25, then each man should pay $8.33333333333333333333333333 each.

8.33333 x 3 = 25 + 5 dollar refund = $30 -the original amount paid.

Where is the missing dollar...

Here is where the missing dollar is...

Three months later two of the original guys went back to the same hotel. The clerk told them the bill was $20, so they each gave a $10. Then the clerk remember it should only be $15, so they each took $1 back and left $3 as a tip.

So..9 times 2 is $18, plus the $3 tip, is $21. But they only originally paid $20.

And there is your missing dollar. :-)

and if each man should pay 8.333333 dollars each then with a dollar each refund makes 9.33333333 dollars the missing dollar is each man's .3333333 cents .33333 x 3 = .9999999. you cant split a penny so you have to round .99999999 to 1 dollar
