So if a person doesn't regularly attend hunts they are some how less qualified to have an opinion? I've had hounds for 18 years. In that there is enough experience to know how dogs and people behave different with certain equipment. If you can't keep a handle on your dogs then that's your problem, not mine. Grady, I still wouldn't shock my dogs on good game, ever. I am 3 hours from the nearest interstate but even when I lived right by one I never hunted close enough that I had to worry about my dogs getting on it. It's called common sense. If they dropped in an unsafe spot, I'd pull my dogs and go home, every time.

Most times if your in a hunt and have to call time out the dog is too far to hear you calling anyhow. So calling them mostly wouldn't work

Nope , I don't comp hunt. And it's things like this that keep me away.
Where I hunt there is a road every mile. Sometimes only a 1/2 mile.
The only times my dogs where a shock collar is if I'm trying to get him broke. Which might be a few times while young.
In 30 years of hunting around here , I've had 1 dog run over. And she was coming down the road to check in.
If your following the rules right now , by the time you got back to the truck to get your transmitter , the dog "should" already be across that road or hit. If not , he's slow enough you should be able to run him down and catch him. So , that excuse doesn't wash with me.
If a guy would learn how to put his dogs into coon , he wouldn't have to worry about him crossing a road very often.

People wonder why the sport is dying.
When people think you have to have a big bright light , tracker system , shock collars , fancy dog box , etc.
Heck , the cost of all that would scare me away too , if I didn't know any better.

You can get used shocking systems fir about 100 or 150 bucks. If you can't afford that you probably can't afford hunts at about 50 dollars a piece.

Well yeah......I mean this discussion is about a nite hunt rule and how it pertains to nite hunt competition. Obviously, if you don't participate in the hunts then you are far less qualified to comment on the rule or how it is applied in the hunts. That doesn't mean you are any less welcome to voice your opinion, it just means your opinion on the subject is prolly less credible.

and they will if you get reported as using it. The whole reason why you can't use it is to be fair to all. time out has been called, my dog is trained to come to me with a little bump, so i do, and he comes right away. the rest do not have collars and are gone for the hour..who wins? I might add i was the 4 dog in the 4 dog race at the time out. FAIR? probably not. Rules are there for a reason, if if a barring one is broken, then you already know the drill.

So you're saying that training dogs for night hunts is some how more difficult than training dogs to pleasure hunt? Or big game hunt? In my world, I don't get to call "time out" to go get the dogs. I have to walk to the dogs and pull them off of the bears or lions if I can't call them off. Therefore obedience is imperative. I've never found coon hunting as difficult as you guys make it seem. I've recently been going more because my son is in to coon hunting more than big game. I can assure you that if I were to drive a thousand miles to a hunt and someone shocked their dogs ,even during a time out, I would be filing a complaint. Alot of dogs will react funny even by hearing another dog getting shocked or toned. Maybe you guys should spend more time training dogs and less time shocking them. If your dog can't handle one or two hours without a shock collar you probably shouldn't be entering him in the hunts. That's just my less credible opinion. For the record I was in my second ukc hunt in may and won the hunt with my dog. I don't suppose facts can be less credible, since they are what they are.

No offence but we can tell you don't comp. hunt buy what you say." Like if a guy would learn how to put his dog in coon". In a hunt you have no say over were you dump your dog.
If I am fun hunting the collar just lets me hunt places I wouldn't normaly like the river when it is up.

How in the world did you get that from my response above? You must have some major problems with your reading comprehension.

not everyone has the time or patience to train a dog to handle as good as what some of yours do. note that time can't be helped but patience is your own fault. sometimes a shock collar (I use the tone on mine) could help a guy get his dog in. during a time out could give him an unfair advantage but after the hunt I don't see it would make much difference.
Keep in mind that if the people that had hounds that did not do this right or that just right or just in general where not ready for the hunts stayed at home. you may not have anybody to hunt against

Shock collars

A Trial is not a place to train dogs, they should already be trained beforehand and making a dog mind is one of those training issues. We hunt without shock collars or garmins.

Training is where it is at folks. But spend enough time with your dog so that he minds you. If a dog is at a trial he should be broke from running deer already. Some can break training occasionally.

Learn your dog spend time with it, goes along way. As Gut says" You get out of it what you put in to it".

It's hard to train a dog much of anything when it is bred to go a mile before it starts hunting, get by itself and don't come back. Therefore I understand the need for the remote control. It solves that problem so people keep breeding dogs with faults because technology can prevail so far. It's a vicious cycle. I bet Daniel Boone didn't do it thataway!! LOL

Good Point L Lyle

Around here there are very few places that you can go over a mile and not hit roads. I want my dogs trained to hunt with me more, just my idea of a dog. Weave a woods and get all the coons vs straight line out to get one.

Just my thoughts, Jeff

Yeah... I paid 150 for mine And unless you walk to hunts it's gonna cost you about 50 bucks. There are two on here for sale right now one for 125 and one for 150.... Maybe if you stopped worrying about laughing it off and worry more about getting your head out of it you would understand

From the idea that someone who doesn't attend hunts has a less credible opinion.

Posted by l.lyle on 07-01-2011 12:29 AM:

We all agree, tracts are getting smaller, houses and roads closer together and some justify new technology to tolerate the reality of the situation.

No matter the technology, I think there will still be problems if you try to hunt a hundred acre woods with a thousand acre dog. I'd prefer hunting a thousand acre woods with a hundred acre dog. Could about spend the night on one tract and not get in trouble. Might not Win a HUNT though. LOL

Posted by GA DAWG on 07-01-2011 01:00 AM:

Id like for everybody on this post to put their names down. Each and every one of us. Meet somewhere in big woods. All go hunt. Cause they are sure more handling dogs on this thread than I've saw in a lifetime in the hunts lol. We will see who's blowing smoke and who's not. Im talking about dogs that will actually go off hunting. Not the ones you have to walk around. Crap that kind should come back. They have no drive!
