Just curious as to how you get the coons to find the boxes before the squirrels, birds, etc... find them.

this is an awesome idea. im going to to give it a try. I would think plexy glass would let to much light in and and over time you wouldn't be able to see through it anyways.

how long would you say it took to get the coon to find them and start using them? if I put some up in the spring could I expect to see them occupied by winter? also, how far do you keep the den boxes from each other?

Some of us can not drive a straight nail, make some of these and bring them to breed days and the larger hunts and I bet they sell like hot cakes. I'll take four.

i just reviewed 26 pages of hits for raccoon den. the only thing i found helpful was this: the entrance is 5 inches high and 6 inches wide and shaped as an oval. make them as small as the coon can stand so that they have less space to heat.
also, and this is important, the coon is one of a very few animals that do not make a den. therefore it is important to make and provde dens for them. with all the hardwoods being cut down for the all important pine, manmade dens are may mean more to your coon population than we thought.

Great idea...I will try these. I was wondering if proximity to a water source made any difference??? Where I live and mostly coon hunt there is a lot of water. Seems like I always find dens near water. There is at least a stream in every woods here, but I have land in the mountains of Virginia right up on top of a mountain. There is no water near, maybe a quarter of a mile away would be the closest. There is definitely coons there, I see them on my trail cameras all the time. The area was old Westvaco paper company land and was logged off like 20 years ago. It has some fairly decent sized trees now, but nothing big and no dens that I have found. I was just wondering if it was worth even putting some up there??? About 20 years ago I made some similar den boxes but all that would ever den in them was wasp/hornets. Do you have to clean out the boxes every so often???/

was wondering do you hang these near or hunt off feeder buckets ? I was thinking that this would be a good idea to hang them 40 or 50 yards from my feeders that way coon would hang in the area even when feeders aren't full . I keep 4 buckets out for young dogs but often cant find time to fill them and keep them going but this would work out good to keep them in the area .

I've kept this post in my mind for a few years now but didn't have the place to do this, but I do now. Has anyone else tried den boxes on their property?

I still have the one I made. After all these years it's still setting my garage. I want to mount it but I have to find the most inaccessible place to put it. If I don't, someone will find it and blast it and the limb it's mounted on out of the tree.

I made about a dozen or so, painted them with gray epoxy paint so they might last a while. I tacked a piece of outdoor carpet to the inside so the cubs could climb up and get out. Been out there almost 3 years and still look like the day I hung them.
I used a climbing tree stand to get way up high and hoisted the box up with a rope. I screwed them to the tree with a cordless drill and exterior screws. I placed them so the opening was opposite north west.
I don't know if it matters, but I took the average height of natural coon dens around here and hung them that high...haven't heard any complaints yet.
The first year they were out I had these weird little "long eared owls" in every one of them. They have coons in them now though.

Love it! How do you check them? Do you climb back up with your climbing stand? Never had one come out on you?

seems like squirrels love to eat on that!

There was actually a large den site study done in Michigan during the 1950s. Researchers determined that den sites within 100 yards of a water source were much more utilized. It makes it easier for the sow to stay hydrated while nursing young.

Just thought, I would share that info.
