YEP.....and he is regreting not doing so. It is hard when you are from back in the day as a lot of them say to take a girl and do things you would with a boy. Some of it wasn't acepted back then. Like takeing a little girl out in the woods with a bunch of men. Hind sight is not even 20x20 for daddies. We are pretty dumb when you get down to it. BUT we have hearts of gold when it comes to our kids.

JUST GO AND START HUNTING AND MAKE GOALS TO OUTDO THE OL'MAN THEN WHEN YOU'VE WON MORE HUNTS OR DONE SOMETHING JUST A LITTLE BIT BETTER HE HAS NO REASON NOT TO RESPECT YOU. I REMEMBER WHEN MY DAD KILLED AN EIGHT POINTER THE ONLY THING THAT I WANTED TO DO WAS GET IN THE WOODS AND OUTDO HIM AND WE'VE BEEN IN COMPETITION OUR WHOLE LIVES. TO DON'T REALLY CARRY ON INTO OUR COONHOUNDS CAUSE WE'RE MORE OF A TEAM. BUT IF HE EVER WANTED TO TELL ME I CAN'T DO SOMETHING HE'S DONE I'LL CLIMB THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN TO SHOW HIM UP. THEN ITS BACK ON HIM TO GIVE ME THE NEXT MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB. TRY IT ASK HIM WHAT HE'S DONE THEN SET OUT TO ACTUALLY FINISH IT.

Seems to me that when you raise a boy and you raise a girl as a dad you view the world a little bit different. I am not a dad and I DON'T speak from experience, but if I was, I think I would be much more likely to throw my young son the keys to the truck and say have fun and be careful out there in the dark woods than I would do the same with a young daughter. There is a perception and not an incorrect that the world is a little safer place for a boy than a girl. Maybe he was thinking of you safety as much as anything. I mean imagaine the scruitny he would be under should he tell you to head out hunting yourself and you got hurt or god forbid attacked or something?? People would view it much differently than if you were a boy. They would question his decision as a father a 100X more than if you were male.

Or maybe he just didn't have a spot for your purse in the dog box........

I'm not going to try and tell you what he meant because I wasn't there to hear the whole conversation.
And , you never gave any history on your hunting relationship with him.
Were you old enough to go when he had hounds? Did he ever ask you to go? Did you go or did you choose not to go at that time? Did you coonhunt before and then quit , and are now getting back into it?

If either my son or daughter came to me now and said they were going to be a coonhunter , I'd say that if they were ever gonna be coonhunters , they would have been one by now. I don't know how old you are , but they are both over 30.
If you're over 25 , I'd say the same thing to you.

But , then again , my idea of a coonhunter may be different than alot of folks.

All joking aside, I think he meant nothing bad, I agree with Christy and some of the others.
Show him just what kind of a Coon hunter a girl can be.........Tim

Well now

Let's take a serious look at this. As a father of a boy and a girl, a coonhunter for 60 years, and a master of hounds watching the new generation of hunters let me assure you that your Father loves and respects you! What I think he meant was that had you been a boy you would have pushed to be involved at a real early age. He has already told you he will do everything he can to help you with coon hunting. If you are going to get involved in coon hunting, you do not need to wear your feelings on your sleeve. Smile, hug him and take all the help that he is willing to give. You both will enjoy it.
That being said, the coon hunting world today is very different than it used to be, but so is the rest of the world. Ladies today make very formable competitors and it bothers some of the boys. These boys know the best thing they can do is make you mad so that you are not paying attention to the hunt but fuming at them instead. And then there are the boys that will be glad to have you, and will do anything to help you. As a master of hound, I usually assign a woman as the judge on a cast with a boy that resents a female coon hunter and tell them why I did it. That always cools them down. Good Luck and enjoy being both a woman and a coon hunter!!!!!!

Aint that the truth.

My daughters go with me occasionally, I doubt either of them consider themselves coonhunters....and yet they have probably been in the woods more nights than most of the females on here.

For a dad who is looking forward to what activities he will do when he has a son he can never get those dreams out of his head. Doesn't mean he is disappointed to have a daughter but some soon to be dads let their mind imagine all the good times he and the 'ideal' son will have. Now if he does have a son and that poor kid can't live up to what dad was dreaming he should grow up to be that is hard for that boy. And even harder is it for the girl who tries so hard to fill that 'dream-ideal' of the boy who wasn't born. It's real, not every dad is as bad about it and some never go there.

For me as a dad I have two boys. One is all about sports but hunting and fishing are only in his mind if I am going and even then he is not always up for it. My youngest likes to hunt and fish but he's still young and we have to keep it doable for young legs. He enjoys being with any of us doing something so he is not really on fire to hunt and fish on his own. My wife and I lost a baby girl years ago so I sometimes find my mind wondering if she would have been the one always begging to get out fishing and into the woods following some no count hound. I love both my boys for who they are but your mind never forgets the one that never was no matter what the reason.

Your dad loves you. Take him hunting and help him let go of the dream boy they never had.

what should you make ?

nothing. bad choice of words, maybe but don't read too much into it. i grew up in the seventies with 2 sisters. at that time i knew of no girls that would hunt. i have a son that is 22 yrs old and would never hunt with me. how i wished he would. i have a daughter that is 19. she has coonhunted, birdhunted, and rabbithunted with me since the age of 5. when she is home from college she still goes with me. i treasure every moment with both of them. so don't let a few misspoken words come between you. my dad is past 70 years old and not able to go with me anymore. he has as i have, said things that we wish we could take back. but life is so fragile and short that we should focus on being happy. he said he didn't mean it so for your sake and his just turn it loose. i will pray for you.

Has UKC ever considered a "BOB BROOKS" approved program for hounds and hunters?? Maybe it could be the next level above say Grand Night? Bob you could work for UKC and travel the country hunting with different people and different dogs and give your seal of approval?? Maybe there could be T-shirts/hats/and trophys that says BROOKS APPROVED. It could be the standard above the standard?? Kinda like the All America team for College Football heck, we could even get the Brooks Trophy like the Heisman for the best in the country. I think this is a totally overlooked program to take our hounds and hunters to the next level.

christys comment

I agree with her. I have two daughters and a son. One of my daghters couldn't care less if we owned a dog or hunted. My other daughter and son love them. There are times my daughter that loves to hunt has to remind me to take her too. I tend to take my son more, I guess I think coon hunting is a guy thing. Maybe your dads thoughts were innocent. Maybe he thought if you had been a boy you would have been interested before now or maybe you were an didn't know how to express it. Get you a blue dog and be the first woman to win the world with a blue dog.
