$10 still says yours have them and wear them....You just like to make up stuff as you go to keep an argument going.

Like I said...Lay off those strip clubs and buy a garmin. You'll like them.

I figured you'd welch ...

Or you could be just a regular guy like me with three broken Garmin devices at my house and feel that I just cant give any more money to a company who produces products that break after a year of well cared for use. Think about it, 100% of my Garmins have broken and are no longer able to be used. I'd have to be a complete idiot to go buy another Garmin product. If you bought three pair of boots that fell apart on you...would you go buy yet another pair? Be careful about who you call stupid on here. If you like a product that's fine, but nobody is stupid just because they dont like what you do. I cant believe I have to even type that to another adult. My 3 year old son, maybe...but an adult? Wow. All I'm giving is my accurate description of what my experience is...and it does follow what I've heard and read from others so my experience is hardly rare.

I will add, and this is to the people starting out and trying to decide between Telemetry and the Astro. The GPS units are still brand new with a lot of people having dependability problems with them. Telemetry equipment has been available for probably 30 years and I've never heard any complaining about how bad it is. With my Johnson system, I've never lost a dog ever. I hunt in NH so we have a good mix of open corn, heavy swamp, high ridges, and thick hemlock forests. I've never, ever had my telemetry equipment fail me, and I've always been able to get a beep on my dog. With practice, you'll learn how to use the gain on one...or unplug the coax cable from your antenna or fold the arms down to get a very good read on just how far your dog is. If as someone just starting out you only have access to telemetry...you still have great equipment that will help you find your dog with little to no problem. For some reason people are all of a sudden claiming Telemetry doesn't work and this just isn't true.

I say use what you want...nobody has to be happy with it except you.

Mike, I have had one for well over a year, no issues that were of Garmins making. The only issue I ever had was when I broke the power button, now I am the one that broke it so that wasn't a Garmin issue that's a me issue.

I know many people that have a garmin and I don't know any that it just quit working after a year. By far the great majority of the "problems" that are attributed to Garmin are user error. Not all of them though so I'm not saying everybody that has problems is user error. They clearly have their weak points (one being the internal connection to the rubber ducky antenna, the other being the charging mechanism of the collars). They have others as well I am sure.

Exactly what do you think you are doing that the majority of others are not doing that causes yours to quit working after a year? Honestly I have never heard of this problem from anyone else, and I have never seen it online either. What do you think it is?

garmin

I got one a year ago. You will need a map card for your area. You can buy them from several venders on the board. The cards will show detailed info, roads, lakes, creeks, ect. I bought a long range antenna also. That helps the range issue some. I have ordered an amp also to help with the range issue. Most times the range is not an issue. I had a dog caught in a 330 conabear, the garmin alerted me that something was up,(treed, silent and not moving ) so I was able to get there fast before the dog died. I would recomend the garmin to anyone who cares about their dog. Make sure that where ever you buy one, that they are an authorized Garmin dealer. Get a good carrying case, so you dont lose the handheld! If you do get a lemon, Contact Garmin. They will make it right!

Well, it's kinda hard to mess up:

(1) Press on button while standing in a field with a clear view to the sky.

(2) Stare at "acquiring satellites" for 20 minutes and finally giving up and putting the **** thing back in the case.

I dont understand how that could possibly be "User Error". As for not hearing about his happening...seriously? It's everywhere. Maybe 50 % of the people who have bought any Garmin ends up hating them. Why are so many refurbished garmins available on the web? Why do people with garmins feel attacked when someone mentions their own bad experience with them? You've had yours for a little over a year...well lets see what yours does in another year. I have every reason to beleive it'll behave just like mine have. I hope not, but I'm guessing it will. It's pretty sad when my cell phone is a better gps than anything garmin sells.

I have never met a "regular guy" who had three Garmins that were broken after a years worth of use! I am not saying you don't but you make it sound like the typical thing is for a Garmin to be broken after a year.I believe that is abnormal!
The only Garmin I own I have had for about 10 years and it still works great. The only reason I have not switched to an Astro is because my telemetry system still works great and I hate to retire it. You can bet, if I was going to buy a system tomorrow it would be an astro because the telemetry systems now are such a poor financial endeavor. Spend $600 today and it is worth $250 tomorrow! I do not care what the product is, I am not going to take that kind of a beating on it!
Why do you think Garmins are holding their resale so much better than telemetry units? It is simply because the problems reported are not normal and really only a small percentage of folks have problems.
If I sold 100,000 units of something and there were problems with say, 1500 of them, you would probably hear 1475 complaints compared to a much smaller number of non-complaints even though there were 98,500 sold that had no failures!!!

Notice I didn't say all were user error. More than 90% of the problems I have heard of or seen on this or the other boards are user error. I didn't say yours in particular was, but if you were doing something differert I wanted to know to make sure I didn't do thesame thing.

Nowhere have I seen anything even close to what you are saying (just quit working for no reason at all). I have seen several "lose range" or stop tracking past 300 yards but that is almost universally someone tightening the antenna too much and breaking the internal connection.

Mine is going on 2 years old (will be in march). Like I said the only issue I have had was a me issue. I broke the power button.

The best thing you can use to save a dog's life ... is good training and a good handle . A dog that runs only coon and knows to come find you when he's done hunting doesn't need his life saved ....

Everyone has their own experience .. but the big picture is what I go by ... I've never had a hound ran over or killed ... not even a close call ... so I could say I don't need a Garmin and it'd be the truth .... yall could say a Garmin saved your dog's life and the dog is tryin' to get killed all the time .. and yall'd be telling the truth ..

But ... if we look at how many dogs are lost or killed vs. how many are hunted ... that is a fact . I don't have the exact numbers of course ... but it aint hard to realize what they'd be .

If you think you need a Garmin ... then get one , the heart wants what it wants ....

But to me , it's no different than getting a 28 volt light .. seriously ?

I'm a normal guy that just happens to varmint hunt ... so to me .. I can't tell a deerhunter that is all geeked out from head to toe and has his high dollar tree stand , feeders and game cams ....

... and a coonhunter that is his twin .... yall look the same to me .

I own a handheld ht something or other garmin. A dog chewed it up pretty good and it sill works. Less the cracked screen and one button gone. If you do get an astro, do not... I repeat do not leave the handheld in the case on your toolbox and drive off. I did that and now own a collar with no handheld or case lol!

i did not read the post except this page. Now i have 2 units and 3 collars all been sent back twice. when they working best thing sense pockets on a T-shirt when not workin worthless as tits on a boar hog! so if u got a real nice dog u would hate to lose come go huntin with me and we will use my garmin and collars if they pickup signal 1 may get 200yds another 4-600yds the 3rd there just aint no telling it lost signal at 40 yds tonite, old beep beep brought them home. i did like them a little while

garmin is the best thing happened to us in these big mountains i was in a hunt sat. our dogs ran a deer a guy in cast had a wildlife we pulled them both out i said my dog was 1.4 miles on 1800 foot level all he could say was his was in that direction when we got there mine was there he said his was way away from mine but it was right there to .after that he said that they proved to him he had to have one .i have no complaints other than i wished they would stay charged longer but no matter what they do you will find them before they go dead . i have the extended antenna that screws in system.picked my buddies dog up 3.9 miles thats all i know to say.......dont have a truck mount.

Posted by bluebellchopper on 12-21-2010 09:43 PM:

I was

helping some local bear hunters keep up with dogs a few days ago and I was picking up dogs. 5.4 miles away. They were using the beep and I had a few of my collars on their lead dogs and they were like"I think there in that country" and I was like "nah try over here haha" I told them right to the very spot the bear and the dogs was going to cross the road. We'll just say I made them all believers. One fella said "Boy that gps thing sure is nice aint it" He has been using a beep his whole life and he said that about it......Geuss where they are or know where they are. common sense to me. I've had my garmin almost two years and never had any issues. I've taken care of it and I love mine. No other way to go. You got to have the screw on folding extended range antenna.

To answer the question that started this post, I would buy a nice wildlife system to put on your hound to use when your Garmin wouldnt get signal.lol
