Recently had a friend show me a tool he made out of a short piece of heavy rubber hose. Was about 3/4 or 1 in. diameter on the outside and maybe six inchs long with a small rope run thru it. Put it in dogs mouth similar to a bit in a horses mouth and tie to collar to keep in place so dogs mouth is open enough to pull quills. I've seen a stick used like this with the leash used to hold it in and the rest of leash used to tie dogs head to a small tree for a crazy dog, still was a nasty job.

Does anyone know of legal over the counter tranquilizers you can give a dog when you are pulling quills? I know you can get some from a vet with a prescription.

SOME LEARN AND SOME DO NOT. THE PA GAME COMISSION PROTECTS THEM THERE IS NO HUNTING SEASON. I GUESS THEY ARE PROTECTED EVERYWHERE. AT LEAST GROUNDHOGS HAVE A HUNTING SEASON. SUPPOSEDLY THEY TURNED THOSE DARN FISHERS LOOSE TO KILL PORKYS BUT THEY KILL COON SQUIRRELS ETC.

porkys
I live 20 mins west of the Pittsfield Pa club, we have more porkys than you can shake a stick at.Every dog I own except the 5 mo. pup has got quilled at least once, have had 2 dogs that wanted to kill them after the first time, they both made the pic of the blue dog look mild. I've never yet taken one to the vet,but I had to put a couple in the full nelson while my wife pulled quills. What works best for me is not to cut them, pull out at the exact angle they went in, and make it as painful as you can. 20 years of Plotts only 2 have not learned ,I think the pain fueled their hatred for the things. This time of year the porkys are breeding and last spring I drove a 2 mi stretch of road and counted 13 porkys, warm up them e collars if you dont want to pull quills, drive around Warren Co. and good luck!!!

did you have something from E. REMINGTON AND SONS along for that ride. I remember hunting the Allgegheny Forrest when we hunted up there for the bluetick hunt. The darn things sure did not need protected up there. Lots of dogs were quilled those three nights.

When I was a kid they weren't protected, we used to carry a ball bat in the truck, I think our best night was 15 or so. Nowadays it's not worth 200.00 a porky and loss of your hunting privileges for a couple years. I remember a few years back Pittsfield hosted the state hunt, we drew a bunch of Ohio dogs that never had seen one, probably 6-8 dogs got it pretty good, I helped pull a few. At least we're only complaining about porkys, I feel real bad for the guys dealing with the wolves!!! We're starting to get alot of fishers here around the ANF, I heard they're rough on a dog and it's only a matter of time before mine catch one on the ground

NH
Up here in NH you can swing away, I carry a pink aluminum T-Ball bat in the truck. It's something fun to do between the coon strikes.
Last year, I wished that my dog would leave the porkys alone that wish came true twice this year, he moved to skunks.
At least it's not quills!

whew that stinks, I have fooled with them once in awhile. honestly I would rather fool with skunks than porkys. so they are not protected up there.

Open season
In NH there is a year round season as long as you have a hunting license, it is the same for coyotes here. I probably see 3-5 porky's a night....they don't quite make it.
One night there was a porky on the ground and my dog was just looking at it, the darn thing was trying to back into my dog....that one didn't make it either.

Species with Year-round Hunting Seasons
The following small game species may be taken year-round with any valid hunting license* except within state park and recreation areas from April 1 to September 14:
opossum
porcupine
red squirrel
skunk
thirteen-lined ground squirrel
woodchuck
weasel
Just lanced the side of my hounds head and squeezed out a half cup of fluid, don't know if the quill came out with it but he sure looks a ton better. That quill was from 3 months ago.

Has anybody tried breaking dogs off porkies using a live one in a roll cage? Seems like you could.
You think I could catch a porkie in a live trap or would I have better luck just driving around with a big fish net? I want one live for breaking bird dogs.

Tried it
I caught a porky and brought it home, it didn't do much good for the dog because I didn't have a neutral area to perform the training. "Neutral" meaning away from his kennel and no association with me. I tried the Wick method ( porky on a pulley with me out of view), he got the point but it was a bad association with the yard.
That being said, I broke the dog one night returning from a nite hunt. It was 3:00 am and the dog had his shocking collar on. Up ahead of me in the road was a porky, of course he struck it from the box. So I let him out, as he sprinted down the road for the porky, I was turning the shocking collar up to 15. Just prior to him getting there, I lit it up. He couldn't have stopped any quicker. I continued to shock him as he ran back to the truck and into the box. This was the last time he attempted to put his mouth on a porky.
The other night while walking out of the woods, on a trail, the dog refused to go any further. I leashed him and he pulled violently the other way. I looked around and a huge proky was just off the side of the trail. I had to unleash the dog. I left the dog there and walked about 50 yards past the porky. I looked back and the dog sprinted past the porky to me....SMART DOG....BROKE DOG!

porky breaking
The last dog I had get quilled got it 3 times, the pain seemed to make him hate them more, I broke him the same way. The nite I saw 13, lit him up on the first one, drug him out and lit him up on number 2 for good measure. Some time later we were in game lands 143, right in the parking lot was a big porky, the dog came out of the box, took one sniff and went right back in the box! Broke dog!

Friend had one that just didn't learn. He only got hunted in porky country maybe once or twice a year but we pulled more quills than I ever would want to count out of him time after time. Got to where he'd wag his tail while we pulled quills. Good dog and wasn't bad about anything else but my friend finally moved him.
Todd , if you're in a area with lots of porkys were you see them on the ground a fish net would work. Darn things are as bad as coon for getting out of small holes. Had one in a kennel run that I could keep a pup in and it set curled up in the corner for a day and half and the next day it was gone and never saw it again with no digging or chewing on anything. Was a small one.
