Here is how I would have scored it had I been the judge. When the dog was declared treed,I would have started the five then proceeded to tree after time was up. If it left before we got there then it would have received minus.It does not matter that it was a previously scored tree.You treat it like any other tree.

Plain and simple the dog was declared treed. IT LEFT THE TREE ITS MINUSED

I don't have a ukc rulebook but I know that I have read that a dog is not to take points (- or +) on a tree that has already been scored. I also know that, no, it is not considered 2 trees if they are grown in together. Because of the "canopy" thing that has screwed a many a coondog. So far I have just seen opinions on this subject and nothing of fact that would suggest that my dog should have taken a minus. I have also read some of these that almost suggest that they think I am whining about losing that cast. I promise you that's not the first cast I've ever lost and probably won't be the last. But you would think that a man in a cast that's trying to be honest and saying "minus my dog she moved left" would atleast be given some slack when we walk into the tree and find the situation that these dogs were in. Admittedly the dog did screw up. But the point is that every dog in the cast screwed up but I'm the only one that got penalized for it! Now you tell me how that's right.

Chuck, You got a bad break. But it was scored correctly from the info we have been given.

Call UKC they will tell you the same thing...

how do you know the dog wasn't barking in a hole close by that tree or something like that, if the dog moves it don't matter about the cannopy there is nothing in the rules that even mention the word cannopy

I guess from now on I'll just let the judge do the minusing. My name is Chuck Weatherford and if any of you boys ever judge me in a cast don't be mad when you have to make me take my minus. I can promise you boys from this day forward I will not hand out an honest opinion like "my dog moved juge, you can minus her" again. For many years I have hunted in these hunts and absolutely cannot stand hunting with or judging a hunter that won't take their minus willfully. But there is a saying that says "if you can't beat 'em join 'em". Happy hunting and I hope to see you folks in the hunts!!!!

In the few years I've been around, I've only hunted with a handful of hunters that have volunteered to minus they're dogs (not including tree scoring +,0, or -). Those types handlers leave a good impression and serve as a positive example to others.
That said, nothing in the rules requires a handler to voluntarily minus they're dog. That is the judge's duty and a good judge won't hesitate to make that call when necessary. No one would think any less of you if you didn't volunteer those minus pts.
But I'll admit, if I'm judging and someone volunteers to minus they're dog, you'll get brownie points from me. That doesn't mean anything, but it sure puts a judge at ease opposed to worrying if a handler is going to start whining and cussing if they get minused.
Volunteering minus is one thing, accepting it when your dog has it coming is another. If you just accept it when you know its coming (like when you are thinking about saying "Minus my dog") that is good enough.
I'd love to draw more guys like you.
