-- Dogs Starting Young (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=324271)
I have a young female that started treeing at 5 months old. I raised her and a buddy of mine started her. She started off treeing easy coons then she started split treeing my buddy sold her back to me and we only hunted her 3 days a week and always tried to end on a good note. I put her in her first hunt at 9 months old and won back to back cast with her. I always was ready to pull her out if things went wrong and she made nite champ at 10 months. She is 15 months old has 3 wins toward grand and half her hundred won for super stakes. It is the stupid handling of dogs like this that ruins them not hunting them. If your dog trees a coon for the first time you shouldn't hunt them till daylight for the next 7 nights. As far as putting them in hunts to early, I am raising my dogs for this and if they can't do it I will get some thing that will.

I would rather attempt to breed up a dog that is fast enough he doesnt have to be super independent...I would rather get a convincing first tree over split treeing all night long any time...
i dont care when they start as long as they start i can
ruin more than most can start.

Most of those dogs get burnt out and by the time there 2 woln't even hunt. I just can't help but see all there threads and replys of dogs doing it since they were 5 to 11 months old.
Take a dog that is not a year old yet and enter a hunt and bad luck strikes and it gets eat up what do you have left?
I have seen more dogs ruined at a young age because guys pushed them to hard and expected to much out of them.

My step dad cracked up when i told him that My latest pup had little or no interest in a caged coon at 5 months old. I don't hunt during the summer but a night here or there due to having a small landscaping business. So i layed her up all summer and started her at 10 months old and she started to click but slowly. I'm all about patience and don't need a barn burner at an early age so i expect them to be showing /treeing there own coon by 12 to 16 months old and she is doing just fine at 14 months old . Considering i only hunt 3 or 4 nights a week unlike most of the pros on here, not sure how your family life is but 7 nights a week can't be fair to the family or the dogs.... NO she is not ready for a hunt or will be anywhere near one till after her second season. Not saying she won't be ready but i want her to be able to handle her own and hopefully not learn /inherate any more bad tricks then she already learned on her own...Here in PA we can train year round except for the Parks For quite awhile now. Back when my Step Dad hunted his own fox hounds and coon hounds he could only run a few weeks before hunting season and the end of the season they were back on the chain/kennel so it was a 3 or 4 year old hound before they were what he called a broke dog/hound.

burn out
it's been fun reading some of these replies; i guess it's true what they say , opinions are like a-- holes ,everybody got one .me too. it's true to fact, every dog has it's own personality . just like every human has thier's. some kids are real good at sports , but by the time thier 15 they discover other things that are more interesting to them [girls] for one. or[ boys] ,what ever the case may be . or some just get burnt out ,most of the time because of a parent pushing them to hard to be a success. same thing i figure goes on in our sport . i've always let my young dogs come on at their own speed . sure i walk them in the woods, when the' re old enough , some will range out ,and some will walk at my heels . some will track, and tree at 5 months, some will do it at 1 year . but at no time do i push a dog to be more then it shows me it's ready to do .trouble i find with alot of handles today , is the young dogs are brought along real fast so they can get sold. an then when at 3 or 4 the dog is slick treeing most of the time, we can'nt for the life of us figure out why .i guess for me it's still about my good name , when i pass a dog along to someone else , i want to be proud of the job i've done.

I have a nice one won his first ukc hunt at 7 months. Doing very well got chewed up a couple of times. I went to Iraq for a year he barked himself out while I was gone. I pushed him entirely to hard to soon. He is still a nice dog just no volume. I still enjoy hunting hunting him. But I want be able to finish him.

i dont think its burning them
out persay. I think these early starters start so quick and look so good guys get way to excited and as soon as that little pup hits his/her 1 st plateau guys think ohh s$%t i burned my pup out better get rid of it. pups are just like kids they go through trials and tribulations. sometimes they just need a break. i have a 9 moth old pup here rite now that started real easy she won her first field trial at 5 mos old and her first hunt at seven mos old i hunt her alot some nights she acts like a 9 mos old pup and other nites she hunts like an old finished dog i dont yell scream and and force her to hunt on bad nights and i reward her well on good night its worked thus far but time will tell
