What the heck were they hunting?
Was it just a field trial? That is not real good when only one dog makes it to the finish! LOL I am sure it will be a long time before I have the money to buy one of these pups but a man has to have a dream!

Ok that makes a little more sense.
Well I guess you would definately want a fast track drivin hound for that. I guess I would just as soon have a pack of medium paced hounds that I could keep up with.
When I used to run coyote hounds I had 4 dogs. We hunted with about 6 other guys we had about 30 dogs all together. My dogs were mainly used as jump dogs. We free cast them and lat them get the yote warmed up then send in help. All of my hounds were slower dogs but we killed a lot of yotes in front of them. They hardly ever over ran a track and never pushed them so hard you couldnt keep ahead of them. I have posted this pic before but these were 2 of my hounds. The lemon and white one I still ahve at my buddies in Iowa.

Ariegeois
HISTORY
Developed in the French province of Ariege, from a series of matings between the Grand Bleu de Gascogne, Grand Gascon-Saintongeois and local Briquet hounds, the Ariegeois excels in hunting hare in the dry, rocky regions of its homeland. (Note: “Briquet” is often mistakenly translated as “Beagle”, but actually does not denote any certain breed. Rather, the term is used to describe medium-sized hounds which are finer-boned, shorter-coupled and more compact than the larger “Grand” breeds.)
Thanks Tim !!! My Brain was in LOCK-UP Mode !!! lol

Hey Steve
I had a red male like that. He was the best I had bar none. He could jump run and fight his own. Someone stole him out of my yard, right off the chain. It broke me I quit coyote hunting and gave my hounds away to friends. The only one I have left is Tango the lemon and white dog. I promised him he would die with me. But he is at one of my best friends house now. As you know my hounds are family to me not just dogs. It was just like kidnapping to me.I looked for him for months and hundereds of phone calls to people I knew that hunted. Never found him.
I had watched the 2 with the Ariegeois. They look pretty good also just not quite as big. Godd mouth to them though. I noticed that 1 dog keep the track though. He would be the one I would want not the dog barking followers. Wish it didnt cost so much to have them imported.
Oh Yes and mike sorry dog work or not. To chase a hog track for 3 miles in 5 minutes or less. That aint to bad for me. I think I would house most any of the hounds that could finish that track in under 30 min. I have seen coon hounds take 45 min to grub a track that went a quarter mile.

The track dog is the key isn't it? How about one that can smell what the others can't? Same old problem next, put serious speed to it. The french like to hunt 6 at a time, for the music. The Africans like 6 for leopard. So imagine 6 of those lead track dogs, assembled into a pack, each and every one can catch it's own lion.
Nose + Track Speed = cats up trees on bad ground. Or hogs, or bears or coons...
The thing is that, there are many different strains of the GGS, some straight boar, some straight hare and some in between.
Track power is definately the most important
I want them to have the game but if they cant smell the track to get it started then what. I guess speed is one attribute that I have never worried about. I wouldnt want them to stand on their head but that doesnt seem to be any problem anymore. Most hounds can over run their nose these days. I would like any cross on the GGS if I could get them on pigs It has sort of becoming my new favorite sport. I went looking for some bobcat tracks today but didnt see any. Moutain Lion are not a common thing anywhere close by me with out getting into New Mexico. That has not been extremely easy to get done.

tim the track dog is key.my deer hounds are just as you discribed.nose and speed except it doesnt equall a treed critter,to us its a big buck with my walkers burnin his rear up.he doesnt have time to think and his tounge is hanging out and thats when he makes a mistake and takes the dirt nap.i wont keep a deer hound that cant do it by itself.it has to be able to jump and run one ragged or i wont keep it.i have had a hound or two in the past that could catch a deer let alone a yote or two

Never ask a man what kind of dog he has. If he has a hound he'll tell you, if he does not, you don't want to shame him by asking.

deer
Deer huh? The reason I did not find much on the GGS on deer is because it is illegal most places in europe. But there was a period when the last wolf was killed, where it was legal to run deer and the GGS would catch and kill, no bullets needed, after all they were wolfhounds out of a job...looking for one.
when i tell people we hunt deer with dogs most say thats crazy, heck only 11 states still allow it. its not sporting or fair now days it seems.

Not sure bout round your parts chuck
I am used to hunting in Iowa where it is illegal to run dogs on deer. But te deer are so thick that you dont need dogs. Walk thru the timber and tag out by noon 2nd day of the season. Dont take much to find or shoot them. Only aloud to use shotguns and slugs no rifles.

I was just Thinking !! But I think a Ariegeois Crossed on a Top Comp. Treeing Walker would Be Off the Wall !!!! Ofcourse it would take a few years of crosses back on itself .. But if a Breeder could Blend these two Hounds just right..
Well Just Thinking !!! lol
Well let me just add that I think Any of the French Hounds will Blend well with Our Current Stock of hound Breeds and they would be even Better !!

If you are looking for the best French nose, then the GGS and the Aregeois are common knowledge in europe as such. Even more than the Grand Bleu, which was imported into this country in the 70's and quite a few people, but not all considered a flop.
Well Tim you know thats why I changed my Mind about Breeding to the Grand Blue in Tn. I just Felt it was the wrong French Additive .. Exp. after watching the Green DVDs !!!! lol

Isn't it something how Bill Green went right straight to the head of the class, and he only bred hounds for about 10 years?
