-- how should this be handled at a hunt? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=304276)
In this situation would the judge have been wrong if he gave the handler a choice between backing away or handling his dog and taking his minus on strike? Seems like a fair thing to do as opposed to possibly wasting the rest of the hunt standing back and listening to that dog bark at a fence.
i was the handler of dog A and am not complaining about how it was handled by the judge because i was not sure myself. i posted this to get input on how this should have been handled.i did question the judge about handling my dog and he said again to handle my dog. at that point i thought about putting a ? on the card because i did not think i should have to handle my dog in that situation, but i was not sure so i did not want to Put a ? on the card when i did not know how to handle it for sure myself.
what i thought should have been done was dog B's tree scored while dog A was just left alone. if Dog A would have found it's way through the fence and made it to the tree after it was dead then my dog takes it's minus. as soon as the tree was scored handler of dog C treed his dog. at this point i think we should have walked towards dog C and given dog B the option to recast because dog A was still "trailing". then all i could do is hope my dog would figure out that she needed to get her butt moving and go hunting. but because dog A was handled Dog A & B where walked to dog C's tree which did not give dog B the option to be recast.
i never treed my dog because i never felt she was treed. she never settled she moved up and down the fence and i know my dog well enough to know before we saw her that something was not right. in fact when we got to the fence before we could see the dogs i told the judge i bet she was hung up on that woven wire fence. i do my best to call my dog for what i think she is doing and i knew she was not treed.
after reading all the posts i feel Like Larry Poe has it the way i see it should have been handled. thanks for everyones input. this was the reason i made this post to try and learn from the situation not to bitch about it.
Jack it may have changed the out come... if dog Dog B would have been givin the option to recast and did... B and A might have went and covered dog C's tree which was slick as a whistle... LOL
