I was at the same hunt test as Jarrod. After the hunt was over 4 of us hung out and BS'd until 4am. When was the last time you saw that after a comp hunt. It's a shame that we don't have that happen more often at any coonhound event. Why do we dislike eachother so much anymore.
This sounds GREAT to me. Nothing proves ever thing to ever body. Looks like it would show a dog can do it on it's own. It might teach some the differance between a me to dog and a dog that will honor another dog. I want my dog to honor and if he out runs the dog that struck the track. It just shows me he is a faster track dog and wasn't lucky enough to come across a track first.
I tried to get a state certification for search and rescue dogs. Yep law enforcment could had just looked on the computer and seen what dog was closest when your child was missing. All the orginizations came into to one room at the capital in a meeting I set up. I was never so embarrassed in my life. All they could do is whine about what the test would be and who would give it. In reallity the thing they were worried about was passing a basic test becouse there are very few that could.
By the way if you ever have a loved one missing. Make them show you the dog can locate and indicate a person hidden in a 5 acre field before you trust it. Nothing worse than a victom found in a place that was searched a weak ago.

Re: In My Opinion
quote:I agree. I think a dog should have to win an HTX hunt before it can even compete in a comp hunt. Then no one can say that grnitech or nitech can't even tree it's own coon.

The comp hunters that look down on it is because they have a me too dog. Its amazing how many ntch's or grntch's can't tree a coon by them selfs and hold the tree for 5 minutes.
Personaly I think in order to become a ntch your dog must pass a htx hunt, it would get ride of a lot of the me too dogs in the hunts. But if you did that you would also loose a lot of the entry fees them guys pay for their dogs. So I guess its a double edge soward.
Just my opinion for what its worth, couple it with 5 bucks and you can buy a cup of coffee most any place in town.

I mean lets face it no-one looks at the htx they look at titles and that will never change. If youre dog can't run and tree and stay for 5 minutes then that's terrible unless it's a pup or started dog.

), but did not loose focus of Sam. He was given his cue word once to make sure he was still focussed. He then tracked into the cabin, straight passed me sitting their and found Sam. He threw his head back and let out one big huge beautiful bawl..****, it still makes my hair stand on ends. It was a wonderful feeling.. I was freakin blown away....I just knew that pup was gonna blow a gasket when he saw me on that porch. BUT, he held it together. I was not his focus, Sam was...All of that from one little swab of cloth rubbed on Sam's neck....Now that was some fine trackin', I don't care who ya are or what ya say !!
Yep it's pretty when done right. One of the best man tracking dogs I was ever around was a bluetic in Texas. If you could ever get those Blood hound handlers to go blue they would have a lot more sucess.

I know the Search & Rescue thing is totally off topic, and I know lots of "coon hound folks" turn their noses up to it. But, I will tell ya what, that is the most amazing, thrilling thing my hounds could ever do...
We got to set in and participate in a training session of one of our hounds that is a SAR dog. OMG...Being searched for and found like that was the most awesome feeling!
For example...Three of us together....One scent swab from Sam was taken...The three of us went and hid in an old wooded scout camp. We all three started out walking together and then split up in three directions...We came back together two different times and split again. Sam and one other goes into the old bath house. The one person stays hidden in the far back corner of the two room building. Sam comes out the back door of the bath house and rejoins me. We walk a little ways further and I split from Sam again. He goes and hides in a cabin. I continue to walk around aimlessly, walking back and forth over Sams path to the cabin. I then go to the same cabin he is in and sit on the porch railing on the front deck of the cabin. I am in plain view near the end, but I am not supposed to be of any distraction to the trailing work of this pup. We were amazed as we watched and listened to this young hound track, not US but SAM. The hound followed Sams scent in and back out of the bath house without even bothering the person hid in the back of the bath house....He tracked us as Sam and I walked off from the bath house and then it continued to track SAM from the point he and I split...The pup never back tracked on me where I walked back and forth over Sams tracks and stayed on Sams scent the whole entire time. When the pup got on the porch, he did hesitate (he was happy to see me), but did not loose focus of Sam. OK, sorry to get "off track" back to the HTX, nite hunts and treeing coon !![]()

If I had people to run tracks for me I would cross train one of my pups. Scent specific man trailing and coon. It would be an easy cross. Just don't have the people to run track for me any more.

yeah your right vince, i couldn't catch up at all on my sleep! but it was alot of fun and you just don't get that atmosphere in the comp hunts.
Corey
Yeah Vince and Corey, try getting out of bed at 7am after that to go to church. I'm to old for that I guess. Ha-Ha. We'll have to do it again in November.
quote:LOL well I won't argue that bc it seems someone is always saying that. When I first started hunting I held NiteCh and especially GrNiteCh is the highest regards. I still appriciate the work that goes into putting the titles on a dog but now realize no matter what title they have they're still just a dog and aren't perfect. I just think if the had the HTX passed along with the title it would stop a lot of the negative talk.

You won't stop the negative talk. Unfortunately there will always be those who feel they need to run their dogs with their mouth or online and run everyone else's down. I guess the overall question I should of asked was why we need to divide ourselves up. To me as long as you enjoy these hounds and they suit you then good for you. After all they're dogs.

This test seems like it would be the perfect thing to put your young pups in to get some credits on when they are to young to be put in a hunt. You wouldn't be takeing a chance of getting a pup eaten off of a tree or hunting it with trash and not be able to correct it under bad game. I think they are great and will try to get our club to put some on. I hope everyone starts haveing them so they are easy to get your dog to them.

if you don't mind what part did you not pass ?
Its great for the older folks also that have put their hunt time in, and just can't do 3 or 4 drops anymore.
HTX
HTX is great and shows tha ti a hound can do it alone. I have judged these and it has to meet all rules to pass it is tougher than you think
have the feelings changed any about the hunt tests in the last few months?

I don't know if the feelings have changed, and I'm not sure that they ever will change.
I re-read this post and it reminded me of how selfish coon hunters can be, and how near sighted some coon hunters really are.
The UKC Hunt tests were never designed to "replace" competition hunting, they were not designed as a pre-requisite either. They were designed as yet another way that we can showcase our hounds, and enjoy the sport. They were designed to appeal to both the hard core competition hunter AND the guy with a world beater that is tied behind the barn that will never make it to a competition hunt.
I've attended a few of these hunts, judged some of them, and I had a good time doing both.... I have a dog that is a bench champion, a grand night champion in multiple registries, and has won enough money in that registry to be crowned a champion.....and to "polish him off" I put an HTX title on him.
My thought is that a dog with ANY title, be it an HTX or a competition title simply met the requirements to earn that title. That title doesn't say anything more or less about a dog.... we don't know how that dog earned it, we don't know how the dog operates....we don't know how long it took to earn the title...just that it indeed did earn the title.
I have another grand night that has a couple of passes in HTX tests...one of which he treed not one coon in the hour, but four coon in that hour....nobody cares about that...but me. I think that is an accomplishment, and I had $15.00 worth of a good time. The club made money on me having a good time...what's wrong with that?
