To all those I have offended or sickened--I apologize. I am very passionate about animals and I guess very opinionated and vocal about what I think--I know that doesn't make me right and you wrong--it just means we live in a country where we can voice our opinions. I did not mean to malign or talk bad about anyone or their dogs--I do not want to hurt anyone's feelings--I just have my opinon and I will stand by it until I die. I love animals, pure and simple and if that makes me an idiot so be it--that's the way the Good Lord made me I guess. To all, have a good evening and good hunting.

As far as hunting my husband had some of the best redbone hunting dogs in New York State. At this point in our lives we are not able to hunt and wish we could. Spent many a cold night out in the woods running after our red dogs. Growing up in the North we hunted woods and cornfields by walking not with 4 wheel drive vehicles and we didn't use feeder buckets. We used the intelligence of our dogs to locate the coon and show us where it was. Our daughter was just 2 years old when she started hunting. Had her own light etc. Being in the South and hunting is a whole new ball game. We didn't have to worry about getting snake bit, during our hunting season they were not out and about. Again--don't want to rile anyone's feathers just a comment from a crazy old idiot woman who loves her dogs and whose opinion is not worth a grain of salt to some.

Bev:

Don't take this all so much to heart. It is a message board. If everyone had the same opinions about everything it would be a very boring place to talk to folks. You have every right to feel about your dogs as you wish and to be honest they are very lucky for that. It is just a discussion and NOTHING you said was taken as a personal attack to me. Everyone doesn't have to agree to talk about things......its what makes the world go round.

"How can you realistically evaluate something you are attached to? Just like people with their kids that "do no wrong" meanwhile they are a terror to everyone around them."

Heck, let me introduce you to my boys. They are far from perfect, and yes my wife and I have evaluated them. In fact we are continually evaulating them. I feel it is part of my responsibility as a father to do so and help guide my children in the best directions for them to in turn live a happy and productive life. Kids are a bad analogy to dogs.lol

I fall in the middle of the spectrum posting above. My dogs live outside. They are expected to sit in my presence. They are expected to lead, and to listen to me. They are not allowed to act hyper or bark for no reason or ever lick me in the face. Yes, I do feel they are just dogs, but if they earn my respect they get it.

Through the years of mutual respect, dogs do become more important to me, but they are still dogs. They are not people.

Briar, if you'd get away from running the plotts, you might actually have a dog that you like.

Maybe but it is mostly the personality of Walker dogs that I don't like. I think if I ran them I would be even more critical. They got me beat hands down in the performance department already.

I think my main issue is that I just don't have a lot of time on my hands. I don't spend much time with the dogs other than basic care and in the woods and if they are not performing when I am out there I have no other use for them.

You all think I have a hard time getting attached to dogs you should talk to my ex-wife.....

True - Dogs do not have souls. But, I know our dogs have taken us places that I never thought could be accomplished and led me to people that I never knew existed and now love. I couldn't just turn around and not show them some gratitude and thanks. They give me hours and hours of enjoyment in the woods and sometimes not so much. But nothing is perfect.....I can't help but get attatched to those special ones, but hey I guess if ya haven't experienced that truly special hound this post would be beyond you.

i my years of life, i have and still do love lots of people, with my family being first and foremost. behind that, nothing can take the place of a good dog. define good dog: the one that satisfies you, loves you, adores you, wants to be where you are, and yes, if need be would die for you. guess what? that fits almost every dog i have ever owned, or seen. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS JUST ANOTHER DOG! they were put here by god, to teach us to love and care. he named them dog, spelling his name backwards, to remind us all of what is most important.

This is your opinion, and you're entitled to it. Just keep your facts and opinion seperate please. God didn't put dogs on earth to teach us anything. The dogs that God put on earth were wild animals, like wolves. They were predators designed to keep prey species in balance. Also, I dont think God spoke English. At least we knew his son didn't because he was Jewish, and most likely spoke a regional dialect...or a form of Arabic. The arabic word for dog is "Kalab", spelled backwards that's "Balak". Neither word means anything to anyone here on this forum. So you can see that your post was rather silly.

I did give my kalab a nice ear scratching this am before heading to work...like I do every morning before I leave. He's my buddy, but still just a dog. And I'm just a man by the way.

facts?

Facts vs. opinions....this thread started about nice feelings. But, of course....that can't last on this forum.

Facts? How the heck do you know whether or not God created dogs to teach us something. EVERYTHING He created has a purpose. ...and I highly doubt he created them for our hunting pleasure, either....but I don't know, and I don't think you do either.

Go ahead and fight about how to value or not value your dogs. But please, don't jump on someone about his understanding of God vs. your understanding. That's just too over the top.

If you guys don't love and value your dogs, then that's your loss....I feel for you, really, but I really pity your dogs.

My dog Blu

He was not just a dog! He was my best friend! Let him out around the yard he was a yard dog put a collar on him he was a coondog. But dont think for a second that he would hunt for just anybody. He might go to them and get petted but he wouldnt go with them. If they took him hunting he just stood at their feet. He knew what and when to do everything. He crossed fences and ditches on command and not before. He was absolutely the best I ever had. It still kills me that I sold him but there is no where for him to hunt down here. He went to good hands and has learned to trust and hunt for them. But he also gets spoiled by them the same way I did when I had him. Thanks CedarHill Kennels!!

You are so fortunate someone got your buddy that uses him the same way you did. That is not always the case. I hate to see a dog traded from one owner to another. Some poor animals have a dozen homes before they die. I know if you treat them right they will come to love you and trust you. Sometimes you have to do what is best for the dog and not you.

There just dogs and let me tell you ive been blessed with outstanding coon hounds ever since i started hunting and yes a dog deserves to be treated with love but not near the same love you have with lets say youre parents or best friend and if you consider a dog to be the best friend youve ever had then i feel sorry for you. Ive always treated my dogs right but when they do something wrong they will know it really quick. And there would be many more good coon dogs out there if people would do what should be done to the ones that dont show any promise. Im refering to coon dogs NOT house pets or yard pets. There were bread for a reason and if they do not make it then save yourself the trouble and the trouble that you create for everyone else when you pawn the dog off on someone else.

From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or, “that’s a lot of money for just a dog.”

They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a dog.”

Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.” Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a dog,” but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a dog,” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a dog” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it’s “just a dog,” then you will probably understand phases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.”

“Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.

“Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.

Because of “just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a dog” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

“Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a dog” but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a man.”

So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog.” just smile, because they “just don’t understand.”

I THINK THERE ARE SOME THAT MISSED THE POINT. NOWHERE IN THIS POST IS HE COMPARING HIS ADMORATION OF HIS DOGS TO HIS FAMILY OR HIS GOD.
HE IS SIMPLY MAKING A HEART~FELT STATEMENT. LIGHTEN UP YOU GUYS! HE COULD HAVE POSTED SOMETHING ABOUT POLITICS!

But a dog can be the best friend you've ever had! I'm not saying you should treat your dog like a human. That only makes for a miserable dog to be given human qualities. But think about it, nothing can ever be more loyal and love you unconditionally than a dog. They don't judge you by your actions, race, religion or your opinions. Only how you treat them. I mean my best friend now isn't a dog, but I know if we ever parted ways and/or fought over something big or small, you know who would always be there for me whether I was right or wrong? My dog. My mom would still be there, but she'd still have some judgement about me or my friend, my dog wouldn't. I don't put dogs before family or friends. But I will always be first to put my trust in a dog and in a person second.

And I personally don't think this post is about all dogs in general. But thats how most people are making it. I see a random dog at the petshop or on the street and to me yeah, its just a dog. If you saw my dog and didn't know me or the dog, I wouldn't expect you think it's more than just a dog either. But this to me is about what YOUR dog means to YOU.
